Better shelter for strays: architecturally designed shelters for outdoor stray/feral cats

At first glance, these abstract structures may look like futuristic furniture pieces, which they are in a sense - but not for humans.

They're custom-built shelters for outdoor, stray and feral cats, submitted by 14 U.S. architecture firms as part of a fundraiser for Architects for Animals, a nonprofit which raises awareness for animals by building better shelters to house them.

The fun and inventive structures - which offer cats refuge, protection from the harsh outside world, and playtime - were all designed pro-bono, and then donated to FixNation, a free Los Angeles-based spray-and-neuter group.

Arkansas Woman notifies authorities of ‘dead tiger’ on side of road

Woman notifies authorities of ‘dead tiger’ on side of road

BRYANT, Ark. — An Arkansas woman called authorities last week to report a dead tiger on the side of the road.

According to the Bryant Police Department’s Facebook page, a woman called police and said she stopped to take pictures of the animal but was “scared to approach it.”

The police department sent an officer to investigate the report. When the officer arrived at the scene, they discovered the “dead tiger” was just a stuffed fake tiger.

“Ofc. VanVeelen located the ‘tiger’ and was even nice enough to give him a ride to the PD,” the police department said on their Facebook page.

25% of families making 50k to 90k have "liquid asset poverty"

http://www.marketplace.org/topics/economy/nearly-half-american-households-are-financially-insecure

This week, the Corporation for Enterprise Development released new analysis of financial insecurity nationwide, drilling down on data at the state, regional and local levels. The group found that nearly 45 percent of households in cities with population of 200,000 or more, are “liquid-asset poor.” That means they don’t have enough in savings, or in assets that can be easily liquidated (such as stocks, bank accounts or retirement accounts), to cover their basic living expenses for three months. The threshold is set for a family of four living at the poverty level, which would need $6,000 to live.

Andrea Levere, president of Corporation for Enterprise Development, pointed out that this financial insecurity doesn’t just affect the poor, it affects those who are unemployed or working at minimum-wage jobs, too..

“Twenty five percent of American families in the fourth quintile of income — which is roughly $50,000 to $90,000 — are in liquid asset poverty,” said Levere.

Randy Albelda, an economist at the University of Massachusetts-Boston, isn’t surprised by the findings. Or, that levels of financial insecurity have risen during and after the recession.

Teachers Barely Used iPads From Controversial $500 Million Contract In Los Angeles

Apple Inc. and Pearson, the world’s largest textbook company, are at the center of a massive controversy in the Los Angeles United School District over a $500 million technology contract intended to provide iPads and Pearson curriculum to every Los Angeles student. Now a new survey has found that the iPads and Pearson-made software rolled out in the contentious program were rarely used by the school system’s teachers for their intended purpose.

The controversy over the contracts with the two companies has been broiling for months. After months of criticism over the iPad program’s flawed rollout, an internal report found that the district may have unfairly favored Apple and Pearson in the bidding process. In the wake of those revelations, the district terminated the two companies’ lucrative contracts, and LAUSD’s superintendent, John Deasey, has faced intense criticism.

The new report on the iPads’ usage, which was conducted by an outside firm for the district and released today, found that the iPads were used only sparingly alongside Pearson’s curriculum, which came loaded onto the iPads. When 245 classrooms were visited in May, only one was using the Pearson curriculum, which is estimated to have cost $200 per device over 3 years, to teach a lesson on fractions. Only 30 of the teachers used the iPads for any form of English or math instruction, and if they did, they usually downloaded outside apps rather than using Pearson software.

Almost half of elementary schools were observed using the iPads for some purpose — though not with Pearson’s curriculum. In high schools, the iPads were barely used at all: four out of five didn’t use the devices, according to observations. A common criticism of iPads’ use in schools has been that, because they lack a keyboard, they are less appropriate for older students who need to type frequently.

Walmart expects employees making $800 - $900 per month to purchase new work wardrobe

Walmart Workers Complain They Can't Afford New Dress Code

Walmart workers are apparently not too happy about having Walmart tell them how to dress, and now labor activists are getting involved.

Richard Reynoso, a Walmart employee working in a southern California store, sent a letter to Walmart’s corporate headquarters on Monday, claiming that he couldn’t afford to comply with a new company dress code that takes effect on September 29. It was written on letterhead with the logo of OUR Walmart, a union-backed organization advocating for Walmart workers.

Under the new code, workers will have to a wear a collared blue or white shirt and black or khaki pants, along with a Walmart vest the company will provide. Employees can use clothes they already own or buy new clothes anywhere they want, but they have to pay for the shirts and pants out of their own pockets.

Reynoso wrote that he makes between $800 and $900 a month and asked the company to cover the cost of buying the new clothes he needs.

“The sad truth is that I do not have $50 laying around the house to spend on new uniform clothes just because Walmart suddenly decided to change its policy,” he wrote. “If I have to go out of pocket for these new clothes, I’m going to have to choose which bill to skip.”

Well... I guess lots of us owe the LAPD cop an apology... Pics/details emerge of car sex

Watts and her boyfriend released their snippet of video not realizing that others had pics and videos that would come out.

-------------
Pictures obtained by TMZ show Daniele Watts straddling her boyfriend Brian James Lucas in his car while the couple steady themselves with their hands on the car sunroof.

Eyewitness accounts suggest that Watts was grinding on top of her boyfriend with her shirt pulled up and her breasts exposed.

An eyewitness who saw the couple as he worked in a nearby office told TMZ that Lucas was sitting in the passenger seat with his feet on the curb and Watts was straddling him and rocking back and forth.

--------

Someone from the office went down and asked the couple to stop because everyone in the office could see them but they continued.

The eyewitnesses said Lucas then began 'horizontally bongoing her boobs back and forth'. He added that Watts eventually reached into the center console, grabbed a tissue, wiped him down and then herself and tossed it on the grass.

chilling photo, clueless parents

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/travel/travel_news/article-2757928/Photo-shows-moment-family-allows-baby-crawl-edge-Pulpit-Rock-mountain-ledge-Forsand-Norway.html

This is the shocking moment a baby was allowed to crawl perilously close to the edge of a steep cliff in Norway so that her parents could snap a keepsake photograph.

Dressed in a pink outfit and cap, the young child was accompanied by four adults, who were at least a few feet away from her, and would have faced certain death if she had rolled in the wrong direction.

Hiker Fred Sirevag, who snapped the chilling photo on Saturday afternoon, said he couldn’t believe his eyes when he encountered the scene as he made his way up to Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock), a steep cliff that has a 1,982ft drop.

would you resign from your current job for 100k? (United airlines is making that offer)

That's one serious paycheck! Overstaffed United Airlines hopes 2,100 flight attendants will accept $100,000 to quit their job
Chicago-based United is looking to get rid a chunk of its over 23,000 flight attendants
The Association of Flight Attendants represents the stewards and called the severance package 'virtually unprecedented in the industry'

Some United Airlines flight attendants will soon be getting some seriously fat pay checks now that the struggling, over-staffed air carrier has reached a severance deal with its employee union.

United spokeswoman Megan McCarthy said Monday that the airline hopes that at least 2,100 of its 23,000 flight attendants will accept an offer that could be worth as much as $100,000.

All for just walking away and never looking back.

The agreement comes six years after United, which employs more than 23,000 stewards, retired a number of its planes, leaving the company 2,000-plus flight attendants above capacity.

Man fed up with barking kills neighbor dog in front of them, the wrong dog

Authorities say a Washington state man fed up with barking fatally shot his neighbors' dog in front of them. But the corgi apparently wasn't the one barking.

KIRO News reports that David William Latham faces charges of felony animal cruelty, among others. His attorney, Adrian Madrone, says his client feels terrible.

Police Lt. Bob Vander Yacht says Latham admitted he shot the dog and that "something made him go over the edge, beyond reason."

Authorities say Latham walked across the street Saturday, aimed his gun over his neighbors' backyard fence and shot the dog. Owner Loyce Andrews says her husband, Cary Chunyk, ran after Latham but stopped when Latham brandished the gun.

The dog died in the backyard.

Other neighbors heard a dog barking and whining at a nearby home for hours after the shooting.
