Fox News hammered by critics for Ray Rice lesson: 'Take the stairs' (cuz no cameras)

Fox News was lambasted on Twitter after the hosts of “Fox & Friends” joked Monday that the lesson from the Ray Rice domestic abuse scandal is “to take the stairs” because there are cameras in elevators.

A spokeswoman for the news network told the Los Angeles Times the comments would be addressed by the show's hosts Tuesday.

The hosts were commenting on the cutting of Rice by the Baltimore Ravens after a video surfaced on TMZ that showed a person believed to be Rice punching a woman, who is believed to be his now-wife, unconscious in a casino elevator.

Co-host Brian Kilmeade noted the couple got married even after the alleged attack, saying, “A lot of people thought that was a terrible message.” He then added, “I think the message is to take the stairs.”

more Los Angeles residents becoming street vendors to make ends meet

Sitting at her street vending booth with products arrayed neatly on a sequined purple tablecloth, Jackie Lloyd reflects nostalgically on the days when she had a steady salary and regular hours.

That was four years ago, before the 39-year-old was laid off from her job as an elementary school cafeteria worker and mounting bills forced her to venture into self-employment.

Now the Pico-Union resident hops from location to location, selling body oils, shea butter, soap and incense. She moves when nearby businesses complain or she feels unsafe.

Some days, her sales bring in $150. Others, they don't break $20.

"If I just had a 9-to-5 job, it'd be guaranteed money," she said. "Then again, I'm my own boss, and I meet different people every day."

Once the domain of recent immigrants trying to scratch out a living, the ranks of sidewalk merchants have swelled since the economy soured in 2007. The group — an estimated 10,000 countywide — is now larger and more diverse, pulling in out-of-work professionals, war veterans and single mothers, according to a recent report by the Los Angeles chief legislative analyst's office.

Inside the tiny town built for sex offenders

Inside the tiny town built for sex offenders: The spiritual 'safe haven' in Florida where 200 criminals and their relatives live side-by-side

Miracle Village, just outside Everglades in south Florida, was established in 2009 by the late evangelical pastor Dick Witherow
Borne out of religion, it is place where registered sex offenders can live without judgement and repent their sins

Many offenders find it near impossible to find housing in Florida, where they are not permitted to come within 1,000 feet of children

Brooklyn-based photographer Noah Rabinowitz spent three days in the village capturing the people who live there
Rabinowitz says he was more interested in capturing a self-governed society, rather than what had brought them together

Guatemala strikes down Montsanto Law

http://www.telesurtv.net/english/news/Guatemala-Strikes-Down-Monsanto-Law--20140905-0026.html

On Thursday, Guatemalan lawmakers voted 117-111 in favor of repealing the 'Monsanto Law,' a provision of the Dominican Republic-Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA-DR) with the United States.

The 'Law for the Protection of New Plant Varieties,' called the 'Monsanto Law' for its seed-privatization provisions. The agreement requires signing countries to adopt the law and adhere to the International Convention for the Protection of New Plant Varieties.

Since last week, popular movements have taken direct action, blocking roads in several cities to call on their legislative representatives to dismiss the law. The law would have authorized stricter property rights and risked monopolizing agricultural processes in the country by placing copyrights on agriculture for the next 25 years.

Many Guatemalans saw the law as protecting the interests of Monsanto, the American transnational that has become synonymous compromising food security and sovereign agriculture production production.

It remains uncertain what options Guatemala has given the conditions of trade agreement, and could risk Guatemala's inclusion in CAFTA-DR.

John Shaming: Richmond cops post mug shots online the day after booking for solicitation of

It's a cyber scarlet letter with a punch, as 11 men found out in Richmond after they encountered undercover officers who posed as prostitutes Thursday afternoon while wearing hidden microphones along busy 23rd Street.

The officers snapped the men's mug shots while booking them in the field, then posted the photos Friday to the police force's Facebook page.

"We intend to use social media to highlight those individuals who engage in this exploitive, risky and unlawful conduct," the post explained.

While john-shaming isn't a new strategy, it has gained momentum in the Bay Area as police seek to fight prostitution and human trafficking. Oakland started a website in June titled "Enough" to shame both johns and pimps after they have been arrested and charged.

But the move has caught the attention of defense attorneys and some legal experts, who worry that defendants - who may ultimately be deemed innocent - could see their reputations disparaged along the way.

cops stop car rushing shot teen to hospital. delay car until he dies.

Gerardo's girlfriend, Destiny Chavez, and several friends put him in a car and were rushing him to an emergency room when their car was stopped by San Jose police near Story and South White roads, said the suit filed by attorney John Burris on behalf of Gerardo's father, Fernando Medina.

"Instead of rendering aid and calling for medical assistance," officers conducted a felony car stop without reasonable suspicion that anyone inside had committed a crime, the suit said.

Officers removed the passengers and questioned them, "despite their pleas for the officers to help decedent Medina," the suit said. "The defendant officers then dragged decedent Medina out of the car before finally summoning medical assistance for him."

Gerardo died at Regional Medical Center in San Jose. The lawsuit said officers were to blame for delaying medical care "that could have saved decedent Medina's life."

An imperfect pet owner does not equal an unfit one

Rosa Torres' dog disappeared from her backyard, landed in a shelter with no tags or ID and was bailed out by an animal rescue group, Karma Rescue. The group adopted the dog out to a new home the next day even though it had received calls and emails from Torres trying to reclaim her lost pet.

It bothered me that Karma Rescue didn't respond to Torres until her dog had already been placed with the new family. Her application — to adopt her own dog — didn't meet their standards, the group said in a statement on Monday.

The column caused a storm in a rescue world made up of thousands of passionate volunteers who don't always agree on how best to save unwanted dogs and cats. And it infuriated animal-loving readers already frustrated by bad experiences with rescue groups.

Karma Rescue had plenty of defenders, who said I'd unfairly cast the group as the villain in this drama, when I should have blamed the irresponsible dog owner.

"I have no doubt that Torres loved" her dog, wrote Linda Wendell Henry, owner of a rescued dog. "But let's face it, love alone is not enough."

$41-million settlement in 'Central Park Five' case gets final approval

A federal judge approved a $41-million settlement Friday for five black and Latino men who were wrongly accused in the brutal rape and beating of a Central Park jogger in 1989.

While admitting no wrongdoing, the city will make the payouts to Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Raymond Santana Jr., Yusef Salaam and Korey Wise, each of whom served between six and 13 years in prison after the vicious attack captivated the media during a time when New York City was rife with crime and violence.

Eventually, admitted serial rapist Matias Reyes told police he committed the assault, and DNA evidence confirmed the claim.

McCray, Richardson, Santana Jr. and Salaam will each receive $7,125,000, according to court records, and Wise will be paid $12,250,000. Each defendant was to be paid roughly $1 million for each year they were wrongly imprisoned, according to the terms of the settlement.

The five filed a federal lawsuit in 2003, a year after their convictions were overturned, claiming police coerced their confessions. Former Mayor Michael Bloomberg's administration fought the legal challenge for years, but freshman mayor Bill de Blasio has championed the men's case.
