Gun debate spurs threats at Colorado Capitol

The debate over gun policy is cranking up tension at the state capitol. Several Democrats in the State House of Representatives say they've received death threats this week.

One was on a voicemail for Democrat Joe Salazar of Thornton, who shared the aggressive message with 9NEWS.

The caller starts out by calling Salazar a "f-ing fascist." The voicemail message continues, "You want to outlaw magazines? Come and f---ing take them. You willing to kill the f---ing outlaw magazines, because you will f---ing die."

Supreme irony -- those who claim that "guns keep us safe" are the ones issuing the death threats...

New word!!!

This popped into a discussion on the Colorado house discussions on gun legislation.

This guy, Rep. Gardner, kept coming up with one wild hypothetical "what if" script after another, and at one point made quite a fuss that the bill's sponsor wasn't in the room to answer HIS very important question (very long day, chances are he waited until she was down the hall answering another call). He's been doing this stuff all day. So, apparently there's a name for it. But I really like the tweeter's name better.

Hmmm, wonder if he's related to Cory Gardner, allegedly my representative in Congress...

Update: Epic Gold Dome Gun Debate Underway (Colorado)

UPDATE 6:00PM: House Bill 13-1229, closing the "background check loophole," passes on a voice vote. That's two of four bills, a long night still lies ahead.
—–
UPDATE 5:55PM: We've been critical of Colorado media for letting Gov. John Hickenlooper mislead the public on fracking fluids, but we applaud coverage of the gun violence debate–at least the coverage from actual journalists–and the media's consistency in pointing out that Republican Rep. Bob Gardner is trying to stifle discussion through his version of a filibuster ("Bobbing&quot . It's a travesty for Republicans to actively try to inhibit discussion of gun violence, and it's important for the media to be clear about what Gardner is doing.

UPDATE 5:47PM: As the debate grinds on…

It's 7:30pm and the Colorado House is still in session. No Boehners here!

Epic Gold Dome Gun Debate Underway (Colorado)

Amid already high tensions over gun policy inside the state Capitol, a pro-gun lobbyist was thrown out of the building Friday at the request of a Republican House member.

Rep. Cheri Gerou (R-Evergreen) accuses the lobbyist of threatening her with political attack ads through a mail campaign after a heated exchange about upcoming votes on gun issues, which would violate ethics rules.

State Patrol officers escorted Rocky Mountain Gun Owners' Association lobbyist Joe Neville from the building at Gerou's request.

Some of the commentary coming from Republican members of the House is just plain scary.

Magazine size discussion - Colorado

Current discussions in the Colorado House, legislation to limit the size of magazines. Disheartening, and more than a little sickening, to listen to the Republicans dismiss the legitimate concerns as "feelgood" legislation that won't "keep us safe". Remarkable commentary given that our safety, in their view, takes a distant back seat to the right of a gun owner to be able to shoot fifteen people before having to go to the trouble of reloading.

The Gohmert Function

Aha! How to keep people from watching Cspan? Sneaky GOP, they use Gohmert as a gag-reflex trigger, ya can't supervise 'em while you're hurling. Yup, very sneaky.

A small fantasy...

Leon Panetta has left the building. He's been planning to enjoy some time with his wife. Now he has to unpack his holiday bag and repack his working bag, and go back to doing the job he thought he'd just left.

There's a little movie playing in the back of my mind. In it, Panetta gets in McConnell's face with a foaming at the mouth rendition of "Are you fucking kidding me with this?!" And then McConnell piddles his pants.

Like I said, a small fantasy. Leon Panetta is far too classy to waste any of his spittle on the likes of Mitch McConnell.

Anti-Abortion Ideology Trumped Science . . .

Anti-Abortion Ideology Trumped Science In Weld County Decision To Stop Providing 'Morning After' Pill

When Weld County commissioners decided to stop providing emergency contraception to county patients, concerns rooted in anti-abortion politics trumped scientific facts and testimony provided by the county’s medical chief, according to documents obtained by The Colorado Independent.

Board meeting minutes from the summer of 2010 detail how members led by Commissioner William Garcia were concerned that the popular “Plan B” contraception drugs dispensed at the county’s low-income Title X family-planning clinics prevented pregnancy by destroying fertilized eggs, or inducing abortions, as they put it. Garcia cited reports he found on the Internet to bolster his case and, echoing rhetoric made popular over the last four years by abortion opponents battling health-care reform, he said the board should eliminate Plan B from the county’s services because the law of the land bars tax funding for abortions.

Dr. Mark Wallace, who directs the county’s health department, explained to commissioners on at least three separate occasions that summer that Plan B contraception can not abort a fertilized egg. He recommended Weld County continue to dispense Plan B, and he objected to Garcia’s proposal to include any language in the county’s Title X contract that would suggest Plan B was an abortion drug.

Yes, these are the same county commissioners who are fracking us to death.
