Trump running out of time as controversies pile up

Trump running out of time as controversies pile up
By Stephen Collinson, CNN Updated 8:30 AM ET, Mon October 3, 2016

Washington (CNN)Donald Trump's tax controversy and his self-destructive lack of discipline threaten to drain the Republican nominee of something he can't afford: time.

With 36 days remaining before Election Day, the real estate mogul's campaign is consumed with the fallout from a New York Times story published over the weekend that found Trump reported a $916 million loss in 1995. That loss could mean Trump went 18 years without paying federal income taxes.

"The reality is that we are in day six of the meltdown," Clinton supporter Neera Tanden said Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union." "He had a terrible debate performance. Everybody sees that. He sees the state polls moving towards Hillary. Eleven state polls were out this week. She's beating him in every single one. He can't take that. And so this is the latest meltdown."

Bernie Sanders: Trump’s Tax Avoidance Is Why Americans Are Angry With Corrupt System

Bernie Sanders: Trump’s Tax Avoidance Is Why Americans Are Angry With Corrupt System
“It’s outrageous.”
Elise Foley 10/02/2016 10:24 am ET Immigration & Politics Reporter, The Huffington Post

The ability of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and other wealthy people to avoid paying taxes is “exactly why so many millions of Americans are frustrated, they are angry, they are disgusted at what they see is a corrupt political system in this country,” Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-Vt.) said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

“Trump goes around and says ‘Hey, I’m worth billions, I’m a successful businessman, but I don’t pay any taxes. But you, you make 15 bucks an hour, you pay the taxes, not me,’” said Sanders, who supports Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. “That is why people are angry and want real change in this country.”

Bombshell report on Trump taxes sends GOP nominee reeling

Bombshell report on Trump taxes sends GOP nominee reeling
It puts an exclamation point on what was already one of the worst weeks for any presidential candidate in recent memory.
By ELI STOKOLS 10/01/16 10:48 PM EDT Updated 10/01/16 11:58 PM EDT

It took less than a day for October to produce an "October surprise."

Donald Trump reported a nearly $1 billion loss on his 1995 tax returns and could therefore have avoided paying federal income taxes for almost two decades, the New York Times reported on Saturday, putting another unexpected exclamation point on what had already been one of the worst weeks for any presidential nominee in recent memory.

The Times, which hired tax experts to analyze the records, determined that “tax rules that are especially advantageous to wealthy filers would have allowed Mr. Trump to use his $916 million loss to cancel out an equivalent amount of taxable income over an 18-year period” -- more than $50 million a year.

Times reporter Susanne Craig received the documents, which the paper describes as “three pages from what appeared to be Mr. Trump’s 1995 tax returns,” in the mail from an unknown source.

Donald Trump Charity Gave to Jenny McCarthy’s Anti-Vaxx Crusade TIM MAK 09.30.16 12:03 AM ET

Donald Trump has not only spread dangerous misinformation about the links between vaccines and autism, but he’s also given money to the anti-vaxxer cause.

His monetary support for the conspiracy theory came in the form of a $10,000 check to an anti-vaccine charity run by former Playboy model and television host Jenny McCarthy.

Trump says he may not accept result if Clinton wins, in reversal from debate

Trump says he may not accept result if Clinton wins, in reversal from debate
GOP nominee also spoke at length with the New York Times about the marital infidelities of former president Bill Clinton, insisting ‘Hillary was an enabler’

Donald Trump said on Friday that he would not necessarily accept the results of the presidential election in the event that Hillary Clinton defeated him, reversing his statement four days earlier that he would “absolutely” respect them.

After the first presidential debate on Monday, the Republican nominee told reporters “absolutely I would” honor the results of the election should he lose. In an interview with the New York Times on Friday, he backtracked: “We’re going to have to see. We’re going to see what happens. We’re going to have to see.”

Earlier that day at a rally in Detroit, Trump resurfaced fears of voter fraud and his unsubstantiated complaints of a “rigged” election. He told supporters that voter fraud is “a big, big problem in this country”, although research has found a few dozen potential incidents of in-person voter fraud in 14 years of US elections. He also urged them to “go and watch the polling places and make sure it is on the up and up”.
