'Embarrassing to our country': Trump suggests he’ll fire top generals

'Embarrassing to our country': Trump suggests he’ll fire top generals
By JEREMY HERB 09/07/16 09:36 PM EDT Updated 09/08/16 12:01 AM EDT

Donald Trump trod into uncharted territory Wednesday night when he suggested that if elected he might fire some of the top generals now running the military.

As the Republican presidential nominee slammed the foreign policy of President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, he also targeted the top officers who have served under them, who are not political appointees and have defined terms of appointment.

Individual generals and admirals have traditionally been removed from their posts for misconduct or a failure to perform their duties. Cashiering a group of them en masse would be unheard of — and could irrevocably tarnish the perception that the military is an institution divorced from politics.

Media turn on Lauer for not fact-checking Trump

Media turn on Lauer for not fact-checking Trump
By HADAS GOLD 09/07/16 10:15 PM EDT

Journalists reacted with disbelief on Wednesday night when NBC anchor Matt Lauer failed to fact check Donald Trump on his claim he did not support the Iraq war in 2002.

"The main thing is: I have great judgment,” Trump said in response to a question as what he has done in his life that prepared him to send America's men and women into harm's way. "I heard Hillary Clinton say I was not against the war in Iraq. I was totally against the war in Iraq. You can look at Esquire magazine from 2004. You can look at before that. And I was against the war in Iraq, I said it's going to totally destabilize the Middle East, which it has. It's been a disastrous war. And perhaps almost as bad was the way Barack Obama got out. That was a disaster."

According to fact checks by several news organizations — particularly BuzzFeed and others like PolitiFact —Trump did, in fact, support the Iraq war in 2002. But Lauer, co-host of NBC's "Today" show, immediately moved on, asking Trump about his temperament.

CNN's Corey Lewandowski Flat-Out Lies About Trump's History Of Using Undocumented Workers

CNN's Corey Lewandowski Flat-Out Lies About Trump's History Of Using Undocumented Workers
Blog ››› 55 min 45 sec ago ››› MEDIA MATTERS STAFF

CNN political commentator and former Donald Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski falsely claimed the Republican presidential nominee has never used undocumented workers.

During a panel discussion on CNN, political commentator Maria Cardona discussed Trump’s use of undocumented immigrants for his building projects, reported discrepancies in Melania Trump’s immigration record, and the recent story of Trump’s modeling agency employing undocumented women in violation of the law. Lewandowski falsely claimed those reports were untrue and that Cardona “ha[s] no facts to back up” her claims.

Russian Greens blast Jill Stein’s silence on Putin’s human rights abuses

Russian Greens blast Jill Stein’s silence on Putin’s human rights abuses
9/6/16 7:18pm by John Aravosis

Two representatives of the Russian Green Party eviscerated American Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein today for her cozy relationship with Russian president Vladimir Putin.

The Russian Greens said Stein was a willing accomplice of Putin’s human rights abuses against the LGBT community, environmentalists, artists, journalists and political dissidents:

“By silencing Putin’s crimes you are silencing our struggle. By shaking his hand and failing to criticize his regime you are becoming his accomplice. By forgetting what international solidarity means you are insulting the Russian environmental movement.”

Zika Funding Fails Again in Congress (tried to eliminate Planned Parenthood and cut the VA)

Zika Funding Fails Again in Congress
by MAGGIE FOX

Congress came back from a seven-week break Tuesday and once again failed to move forward a bill that would pay for a federal Zika response.

As senators traded barbs about whose fault it was, Florida health officials said they'd found seven more home-grown cases of Zika, six of them part of an outbreak in Miami Beach. Florida now has documented 56 locally transmitted cases of Zika infection, presumably passed by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes that are active nearly year round in south Florida.

"Republicans were more interested in attacking Planned Parenthood and flying the Confederate flag. Can't make that stuff up — that's really the truth — than protecting women and babies from this awful virus," said Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.

"They sent it back with all this strange, weird stuff in it. They cut funding for the Veteran's Administration by half a billion. They tried to disguise the fact that they wanted to eliminate Planned Parenthood."

CNN Admits They Serve As Parrots For The RNC

CNN Admits They Serve As Parrots For The RNC
By Karoli Kuns 9/06/16 11:21am

For the past three weeks, all we have heard about is how many days it has been since Hillary Clinton held a press conference. The drumbeat has been relentless, consuming reporters on social media on a daily basis. On cable news, innumerable segments from everyone from Andrea Mitchell to Rachel Maddow to Wolf Blitzer were run complaining that Hillary isn't holding a press conference.

There was even a countdown clock. And as it turns out, that countdown came directly from the Republican National Committee, as Ashleigh Banfield admitted in her intro to a discussion with Jeff Zeleny about "the cough," which is the topic of today's huddle.

It has been 174 days since Merrick Garland was nominated to replace Justice Antonin Scalia, who died 205 days ago, but no cable news network has put up a countdown clock for that, nor devoted much more than a passing mention of it over the past several weeks.

Trump Ally: No Voting Rights For Women Using Free Birth Control & Welfare Recipients

Trump Ally: No Voting Rights For Women Using Free Birth Control & Welfare Recipients
SUBMITTED BY Miranda Blue on Tuesday, 8/30/2016 12:13 pm

Wayne Allyn Root, a Donald Trump admirer who often claims to be in frequent contact with the GOP candidate has led campaign rallies for him in Nevada, said yesterday that people who receive federal benefits such as Medicaid, welfare and food stamps should lose their right to vote, as should women who use “free contraception” under the Affordable Care Act.

Root’s plan would cut a large swath of Americans from the voter rolls: Roughly one in five Americans benefit from means-tested benefit programs, while 67 percent of women with private health insurance use copay-free contraception through the Affordable Care Act (which, by the way, is paid for by insurance companies, not by the federal government).

Will Presidential Debate Moderators Really Not Challenge Lies?

Will Presidential Debate Moderators Really Not Challenge Lies?
Chris Wallace says it isn’t his job to “truth squad,” though some journalists strongly disagree.
09/05/2016 03:29 pm ET
Michael Calderone Senior Media Reporter, The Huffington Post

NEW YORK ― When Donald Trump hits the debate stage in a few weeks with Hillary Clinton, it’s not hard to imagine the Republican nominee challenging his Democratic rival’s foreign policy judgment by falsely claiming ― as he’s done dozens of times ― to have been a staunch critic of the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq.

“Fox News Sunday” host Chris Wallace, the moderator for the third presidential debate, said in a Sunday interview that it isn’t his role to call out the candidates’ false claims.

“That’s not my job,” Wallace told his Fox News colleague Howard Kurtz. “I do not believe that it’s my job to be a truth squad.”

Fox News’ Presidential Debate Moderator Says He’ll Let Candidates Lie

Fox News’ Presidential Debate Moderator Says He’ll Let Candidates Lie
Anything goes.
Judd LegumFollow Editor-In-Chief, ThinkProgress

For the first time, Fox News has been selected to moderate a presidential debate.

The Presidential Debate Commission selected Chris Wallace, host of Fox News Sunday, to moderate the third presidential debate, scheduled for October 19 in Las Vegas.

Wallace appeared on Fox News’ Media Buzz to discuss what his selection meant to him personally and “what it means to Fox News.”
The host of the program, Howard Kurtz, asked Wallace, “What do you do if they make assertions that you know to be untrue?”

“That’s not my job,” Wallace replied, without skipping a beat. “It’s not my job to be a truth squad.”
