Coronavirus Chrises Underlyies 8 Trump Failings as a Leader: CNN

(CNN) — Until now President Donald Trump has been lucky. During his first three years in office there was no major crisis on his watch of the type that has challenged every president in the half century before him.

There was nothing comparable to the Cuban missile crisis (John Kennedy); no Vietnam War (Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon); no hostage crisis in Iran (Jimmy Carter); no invasion of Afghanistan by the Soviets (Carter and Ronald Reagan); no invasion of Kuwait by Saddam Hussein (George H. W. Bush); no suicide bombings by al-Qaeda directed at two US embassies and an American warship (Bill Clinton); no 9/11 attacks (George W. Bush), and no global financial crisis (Barack Obama)

The nearest that Trump has come to a crisis is with Iran, which was largely self-created after he pulled out of the Iranian nuclear deal two years ago and stoked tensions with that country.

Now comes the Covid-19 or novel coronavirus, a major crisis that combines elements of Hurricane Katrina—a natural event that could kill a substantial number of Americans-- and also elements of the 2008 great recession, since the economic repercussions of the virus on supply chains as well as on consumer and business confidence are already very troubling.

Some presidents rise to the occasion when a crisis emerges. Kennedy deftly avoided a possible nuclear war with the Soviets during the Cuban missile crisis, while George H. W. Bush assembled a massive international coalition to expel Saddam from Kuwait. And George W. Bush quickly responded to the 9/11 attacks by toppling the Taliban government in Afghanistan and destroying much of al Qaeda. (Two years after 9/11 Bush also made the disastrous decision to invade Iraq). Obama adeptly navigated the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression.

In the early days, Trump hasn't risen to the occasion of the coronavirus crisis. And there are reasons to worry about whether he can do so, as the crisis underlines eight of his key failings as a leader.

First, Trump doesn't do any homework. As reported in my book, "Trump and his Generals," in early 2017 Trump's former chief strategist, Steve Bannon, told Trump's former national security adviser, H.R. McMaster, that Trump never studied an issue: "Trump is a guy who never went to class. Never got the syllabus. Never bought a book. Never took a note. He basically comes in the night before the final exams after partying all night, puts on a pot of coffee, takes your notes, memorizes what he's got to memorize. Walks in at eight o'clock in the morning and gets whatever grade he needs. That's the reason he doesn't like professors. He doesn't like being lectured to."

Related to Trump's first failing is his second: He always believes he knows more than the experts about any given subject. During his presidential campaign, for instance, Trump said he knew more about fighting ISIS than the generals leading the fight, an absurd claim since Trump had avoided military service in Vietnam and his knowledge of ISIS and the Middle East was no deeper than the average newspaper reader..(more at link at top)

I was on a movie going binge..Got to see them all..and all. I did know it wasn't a happy film, but I came out of the theater crying it was so sad. Awfully sad. I didn't think it would work so well, but the writer knew how to write sad plays, and also, Zeffirelli knew how to direct sad movies.

Every time the word "Biden" is mentioned by Trump,

people will think of Trump trying to get dirt on Biden's son..no matter what Trump says afterwards. (and the impeachment)

Every time Sanders is mentioned by Trump, Trump will add the words "socialism" or "communism."

Biden will insure that Trump's crookedness and evil nature will be constantly exposed. Just by Trump saying the word "Biden."

That is it, and that is all.

Today Stock Market Dropped 4.42%, In 1987 the Stock Market Dropped. 22.6% in one day.

Yes, today's drop totaled more points than 1988, but please put things into perspective. Also, the market was at a record high for the last couple of weeks. Will it get worse? Maybe, probably. It is the future. I don't know, if you do, let me know. That drop was on October 19, 1987

After a long day, you have probably done some back-of-the-napkin math and decided there was no point in going out for dinner when you could get food brought to your door for the same cost, plus a tip. So you fired up a delivery app.

Too bad the numbers aren’t that simple.

When you order through a delivery app, you pay multiple parties, including the driver and the companies that offer the apps, like Uber Eats and Postmates. In some cases, you pay the restaurants extra fees as well.

The markups can be downright egregious. Take Panda Express, the fast-food chain. If you ordered a $39 Family Feast value meal using Uber Eats, your tab would be 49 percent higher than if you bought the same meal at the restaurant.

You would have to really love Panda Express to pay this kind of premium — and that doesn’t even include a tip.

The extra fees creep into your bill for various reasons. Some restaurants hike the prices of food ordered for delivery. And most of the popular apps charge a delivery fee and cram tax and extra service costs into a single line on the bill, making it difficult to notice the inflated costs.

I tested the four biggest competitors.

I focused my tests on DoorDash, Postmates, Grubhub and Uber Eats, the four largest delivery apps in the United States. To compare them, I used all four apps to make identical orders — such as the same kind of pizza — from four restaurants.

How can you protect yourself?

In general, the public should do "what you do every cold and flu season," said Dr. John Wiesman, the health secretary in Washington state -- where the first US case of Wuhan coronavirus was confirmed.

That includes washing your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

The World Health Organization recommends staying at least 3 feet (or 1 meter) away from anyone who may be infected.

If you're the one feeling sick, cover your entire mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze. But don't use your hands. Use either your bent elbow or a tissue that you throw away immediately afterward.

While the CDC does not recommend N95 respirator masks for the general public, it does recommend them for health care workers.

But certain types of facial hair can prevent respirators from working effectively. So, the CDC created an infographic showing which styles of facial hair are riskier than others.

Some thoughts about the computer, the internet, and going to the library.

..The computer and the internet makes going to the library to get information obsolete. I sit here and think about the incredible progress we have made, and then think about the danger of sitting in front of a screen hour after hour after hour. This screen makes it possible to search and find any kind of information I want. Anything from the price of new and use cars, to what nude women and men look like from different parts of the world. Also, finding that information about A,B,C, and D, and processing that in my mind (that is looking at the information and deciding if I want more information or move on to new info) is almost instantaneous.
...If I want, I can use the exact same sitting place and screen to send a letter to a friend. Now the letter does not have to go through the mail or get a stamp. That letter or message is instantaneous. And I can get a letter or message back that is also instantaneous from a friend if that friend is ready for the message and willing to reply immediately.
...What does this mean for library use? What does it mean for doing research? Learning about how to do research, and what that means? Especially knowing the complexities of what that entails?
...Guess What?...It means nothing to most people. Nothing at all, because the computer and the internet take care of all that. Forget the meaning and difficulty of doing research and finding information in the past. That is over. The computer and the internet make that not necessary. It does it instantly. Yes, now, copy and paste and send it out. Copy and Paste......Copy and Paste...Copy and Paste....?????? and then SEND....

Whoever we nominate, the Republicans & Trump will try to destroy him or her.

..The opposition will use every trick there is, and invent a few to destroy our candidate. And it could be one of the ugliest campaigns ever. Perhaps the worst, because Trump & Company will lie and lie some more. That is what he does, and has always done. I think we have a good chance because Trump is "The Liar in Chief" but it will not be easy. Yes, Trump & Company will attack in every way there is, & if some of us think they won't, then we are fooling ourselves. Anything can happen, and anything often does happens. The very last person I expected to be our President was Donald Trump. And I suspect that I am not alone with that perspective.
