What Ontario students will learn in new sex-ed classes

Source: Toronto Star

The Ontario government has unveiled the first update to the province’s sex education curriculum since 1998.

Premier Kathleen Wynne has vowed that the updated curriculum will be in place in public and Catholic schools this September.

“We’re very committed to this,” Wynne told reporters on Monday.

The changes will impact students from Grade 1 to Grade 12.

Grade 1

Students in Grade 1 will be taught the proper names for body parts – something child-abuse investigators have long urged.

They will also learn how to recognize non-verbal signals, such as facial expressions and tone of voice, to better communicate with others.

Grade 2

In Grade 2, students will learn about bodily changes and development, verbal and physical violence, and the concept that “no means no.”

Grades 3-4

Grade 3 students will learn about same-sex relationships, while the physical, emotional and social impacts of puberty will move from Grade 5 to Grade 4.

What a healthy and responsible curriculum that deals with the realities that children will face as they mature.

Can you even imagine how this curriculum would go over in the states... right-wing heads would explode!

Republican Presidential Hopeful Says There’s No Such Thing As A War Crime

Source: Think Progress

Ben Carson, who is considering mounting a campaign for the 2016 GOP presidential nomination, said Monday that the United States should not hesitate to put boots on the ground to defeat the Islamic State — and that they should be free to fight them without any fear of prosecution for their actions whatsoever.

In a Fox News interview, Carson offered a broad criticism President Obama’s handling of national security. Asked how he would take on ISIS were he president, the neurosurgeon voewed he would “not hesitate to put boots on the ground.” He then suggested that the military should not be micromanaged or subject to any war crimes law:

CARSON: Our military needs to know that they’re not gonna be prosecuted when they come back, because somebody has, said “You did something that was politically incorrect.” There is no such thing as a politically correct war. We need to grow up, we need to mature. If you’re gonna have rules for war, you should just have a rule that says no war. Other than that, we have to win. Our life depends on it.

Meet the model with Down syndrome who just made fashion history at NYFW

Source: Mashable

Jamie Brewer just made fashion history.

The American actress, best known for her role in the FX series American Horror Story, was the first model with Down syndrome to walk in New York Fashion Week on Thursday. She wore an original design by Carrie Hammer.

Brewer graced the runway as part of Hammer’s Role Models Not Runway Models campaign, through which the designer tries to represent the real women who purchase her clothes. Hammer started the campaign at last year's Fashion Week; the first show featured her friend, Danielle Sheypuk, who uses a wheelchair.

“Young girls and even young women ... [see me] and say, 'Hey, if she can do it, so can I,'" Brewer told Today. "It’s a true inspiration being a role model for any young women to [encourage them] in being who they are, and showing who they are."

Hammer was inspired to start Role Models Not Runway Models after she received an email from Katie Driscoll, cofounder of the nonprofit Changing the Face of Beauty, which advocates for the inclusion of people with disabilities in media and advertising. Driscoll's daughter, Grace, was born with Down syndrome, and she wrote to Hammer asking her to feature a role model for Grace.

Georgia public school teachers humiliate kids for not praying to ‘God our Father’: lawsuit

Source: Raw Story

The Freedom From Religion Foundation filed a lawsuit against the Emanuel County School System in Swainsboro, Georgia after a teacher insisted that the children of atheists participate in daily prayers.

According to the lawsuit, teacher Kaytrene Bright and Cel Thompson forced the children of anonymous plaintiffs Jane and John Doe to join their classmates in prayer or leave the classroom.

<snip>

When John and Jane Doe learned of this, they contacted Swainsboro Primary School Principal Valorie Watkins, who told them that it they didn’t want their children to pray, their only recourse would be to have their children leave the classroom while the other children offered thanks to God.

Once this policy was initiated, Jamie told her parents that she began being teased by other students. Jesse said that his teacher, Kaytrene Bright, “used her mean voice” when she sent Jesse into the hallway, and pressured Jesse to pray.

Bright told Jesse that Jane Doe was a “bad person” for not believing in God, and eventually wore Jesse down to the point where Jesse joined in the classroom prayers.

New Urban Outfitters Tapestry Resembles Concentration Camp Uniform

Source: TPM

(Image via Business Insider)

Urban Outfitters came under fire on Monday for selling a tapestry that resembles the uniform gay male prisoners were forced to wear in Nazi concentration camps.

The Anti-Defamation League slammed the store for selling the tapestry and urged Urban Outfitters to remove the item from stores.

"Whether intentional or not, this gray and white stripped pattern and pink triangle combination is deeply offensive and should not be mainstreamed into popular culture," ADL National Director Abraham Foxman said in a Monday statement. "We urge Urban Outfitters to immediately remove the product eerily reminiscent of clothing forced upon the victims of the Holocaust from their stores and online."

The tapestry was available in stores on Tuesday morning, according to Bloomberg News, but it is not available online.

I hesitate to give them more publicity, but I would hope that this kind of negative attention affects their bottom line.

July 1970: Harlem, full of life

Source: Mashable

In the 1960s, large numbers of residents left Harlem for neighborhoods in Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx, seeking better schools, improved housing and a stronger sense of safety. Left in Harlem were the people who couldn't afford to or chose not to move.

Despite massive federal investment throughout the 1970s, in 1978 the New York Times would publish an article titled "Harlem's Dreams Have Died in Last Decade, Leaders Say."

Yet, as these pictures show, that didn't mean Harlem in 1970 was lacking in vibrancy. In the words of Camilo José Vergara, another photographer documenting Harlem during the decade: "There was something vital going on in Harlem in the '70s."

Source: Addicting Info

While a measles outbreak grips the US and health professionals seek to stem the tide, anti-vaxxers have published a book to convince children that the deadly disease is “marvelous.”

Melanie’s Marvelous Measles is available on Amazon, and sets out to persuade 4-10-year-old children that the measles is actually pretty fun, has no serious possible side-effects, and is something kids should look forward to getting.

The book includes such inspired medical advice as :

* measles is easily avoided by drinking melon juice
* vaccines weaken the human immune system,
* getting measles strengthens it (as does melon juice).
