Regulations for Pissing on Cheney’s Grave Announced

DC – The National Park Service announced today that, responding to popular demand, it is preparing rules and regulations for pissing on the grave of Dick Cheney.

“It’s important to remember,” said a spokesman, “That Cheney does not have an actual grave at this time since he is not dead. However, public interest in pissing on his grave makes it increasingly urgent to have plans in place.”

“Ordinarily, we do not encourage urinating in public places. However, Cheney is so universally hated that we see no practical way of keeping it from happening, and have decided instead to regulate it like any other recreational activity.”

Where are the birds????

There are no birds this fall/winter in my yard. The full feeders have not been touched.
My neighbor, who keeps a giant feeder of black sunflower seeds, says she has no visitors either, since summer.
This is normally an area that gets at least 12 types of birds in the fall/winter, and we have year round cardinals.
Have not seen a cardinal since ....gosh, maybe last spring?

Anyone else have this problem?

How Our 1989 Invasion of Panama Explains the Current US Foreign Policy Mess

Think back...
Bush, 41 was Pres.
and Darth Cheney was Sec. of Defense.

And they invaded Panama much the same way then invaded Iraq a decade later, eve with TV coverage.

What happened during and after that invasion is what set the pattern for Iraq and Afghanistan.

After I read this, everything made a lot more sense.

Twenty-five years ago this month, early on the morning of December 20, 1989, President George H.W. Bush launched Operation Just Cause, sending tens of thousands of troops and hundreds of aircraft into Panama to execute a warrant of arrest against its leader, Manuel Noriega, on charges of drug trafficking. Those troops quickly secured all important strategic installations, including the main airport in Panama City, various military bases, and ports. Noriega went into hiding before surrendering on January 3rd and was then officially extradited to the United States to stand trial. Soon after, most of the US invaders withdrew from the country.

In and out. Fast and simple. An entrance plan and an exit strategy all wrapped in one. And it worked, making Operation Just Cause one of the most successful military actions in US history. At least in tactical terms.

Excellent series...What life is like in Russia post Russian collapse

After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Russia became a wild east in which communist central planning was supplanted by crude, free-wheeling capitalism. A small number of people - dubbed “oligarchs” by the press - became enormously wealthy by seizing control of state assets or buying them at knock-down prices. President Vladimir Putin, who came to power unexpectedly on the last day of 1999, re-imposed stability, while stronger oil prices fueled growth.

9 part series...
http://www.reuters.com/investigates/section/comrade-capitalism/

I am now on Part 9, about the lives of the Russian people..

Take away....the wealth theft by Oligarchs is Global, including Russia.

Burning question...is Putin a powerless puppet like other heads of state?

Medicare is selling private info to insurance agents

We know, cause we just got a letter from an insurance agent in Montgomery ( we live 2 hours away from there) soliciting us,
which stated that this month one of us got a letter from Medicare in this enrollment period.
That info, plus the name and address, was known only to Medicare.

Both of us are extremely pissed, and formulating a thoughtful reply to the insurance agent.

It's official..we ended the war in Afghanistan. Well, except for..........

Did we even call it a war?

So, Obama announces this past week, war over in Afghanistan.

Pentagon will call new US mission in Afghanistan 'Operation Freedom's Sentinel;' mission will involve counterterrorism and training, advising, assisting Afghans.

I guess they are hoping anyone over 50 has Olds Heimer's disease and does not remember how we were sold the lie of Viet Nam by calling troops "advisors".

so hurrah! We are now not at war in Iraq!
We are not at war in Afghanistan!
Droning Syria and Pakistan and Yemen and Algeria...that's not a war.
Honestly, it is not.
Those are Freedum drones.

But hey, I can overlook that, just thinking of all the money that can be spent on America's problems of homelessness, unemployment, etc.

Where's my happy dance icon...........????

UPDATE:
This piece from WSJ:
the Wall Street Journal reports that some 18,000 foreign troops, around 10,600 of them American, are staying in Afghanistan. The troops are allowed to remain under the terms of two security pacts the Afghan government signed with the US and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in September.

the Stupidest Anti-Science Bullshit of 2014

2014 had its fair share of landmark scientific accomplishments: dramatic cuts to the cost of sequencing a genome; sweeping investigations of climate change impacts in the US; advances in private-sector space travel, and plenty more. But there was also no shortage of high-profile figures eager to publicly and shamelessly denounce well-established science—sometimes with serious consequences for public policy. So without further ado, the most egregious science denial of 2014:

Basically everything said by Donald Trump:

and

Senate overrun by climate deniers:

and much more, details, here:

Pluto is a planet again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh Pluto, we have missed you. You have been treated so callously.
But , now....welcome back!

Just goes to show you how capricious all that science stuff can be...

The debate renewed in October over the fate of the once-planet Pluto.

Pluto, which was discovered in 1930 by astronomer Clyde Tombaugh, was demoted by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) to dwarf planet status in 2006. The IAU now considers the solar system to consist of eight planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics held a debate in September about whether Pluto should be a planet. Voters listened to three scientists who presented various views in a debate and decided that Pluto is indeed a planet.

For the record, the IAU still lists Pluto as a dwarf planet.

The dwarf planet Pluto is recognised as an important prototype of a new class of Trans-Neptunian Objects. The IAU has put given a new denomination for these objects: plutoids.
