abqtommy's JournalFrom The BBC: Your pictures of Scotland 2 - 9 July (2021)
Ahhh, now it's officially Friday for me. It's a fine photo collection today that displays all the best of
Scotland. Why, it's almost as good as being there! Enjoy!

My humorous attempt to describe being out and about In Albuquerque today.
Our primary purpose for going out today was to deposit a check that my Son had gotten for his
birthday from his only surviving Gramma. Imagine my chagrin when the teller at the drive-thru told
me that they couldn't deposit the check since it was dated 2020. I just had to laugh at myself since
I hadn't noticed. That puts perspective on any of my delusions of personal competence. Feel free to
laugh along with me. Just not too loudly, please. Gramma made a mistake and will send along a
correctly-dated check.
We moved on to our secondary goal of having lunch at our favorite local East India curry restaurant.
(I only mention that since there are Thai Curry restaurants and there's nothing funny about asides
like this. Sorry.) This restaurant has survived the shutdowns so far and now offers their buffet all
day. YAY.
All the staff at this place are East Indian and as good an argument in favor of immigration as I come
from. Vive le difference! Except the French pronounce difference differently than we do. Oh well.
Since my son is blind I find it convenient to go load him up a plate since I know what he likes. Then I fix my own plate and we get down to eating and chatting. Since I'm paying for this he has to listen
to me as I regale him with some anecdotes from my time being exposed to curry between 1951 and 1955 when I lived in West Pakistan (and visited India) in the company of my older sister and
parents. In deference to the patience and sensitivity of my friends here at DU I will not reproduce
any anecdotes here but trust me, they are funny!
As we ended up our excursion on the drive home we had country music on the radio. We had the air going and knew the air was on at home and that's nice since it was 95 degrees. I had the thought that for awhile I'd forgotten all the other troubles that surround us and that if life never got any better than that then it was good enough.
And that's not funny, that's priceless.
Here's a joke for Duncanpup:
Wifey: If I died would you get married again?
Hubby: Maybe.
Wifey: Would you let her drive my car?
Hubby: Maybe. She might want something else.
Wifey: Would you give her my clothes?
Hubby: No, she's not your size.
I heard this joke years ago from one of my British friends. It's still funny.
Malawi Pride and press freedoms in Palestine: human rights this fortnight* - pictures/Guardian
* A "fortnight" is a period of time known as "two weeks". I learned that in 4th grade thanks to Mrs.
Bartlett, my teacher whom I remember very fondly.
This is an informative gallery. I learned two language lessons. One is a Spanish slogan "Embrazos
No Muros" which translates into English as "Hugs Not Walls". The other lesson was that citizens
of The Philippines are known as Filipinos. I'm sure others will find their own interests. Enjoy!

Good News Network: 140 years ago today, the Tuskegee Institute opened in Alabama...
...as a one-room school. The esteemed historically-black college was founded with the permission and a $2,000 grant from legislators, with educator Booker T. Washington at the helm. 30 adult pupils attended the first classes in a shanty owned by an AME Zion Church.
Soon after, the campus was moved to a 100-acre abandoned plantation, which is the present site, and where Dr. Washington is buried. 50 years later the number of students had increased 100-fold, and renowned botanist George Washington Carver conducted his pioneering studies on peanut cultivation there.
Dr. Frederick Patterson, who oversaw the establishment of the School of Veterinary Medicine at the university, brought the Tuskegee Airmen flight training program to the Institute. The all-Black fighter squadrons became highly decorated World War II combat veterans. Dr. Patterson also founded the United Negro College Fund, which has raised more than $1 billion for student aid.
At the time of Washingtons death in 1915, there were 1,500 students, a $2 million endowment, 40 majors, 200 faculty, and 100 buildings on campus. (1881)

From The CBC*: Earth has a 27.5-million-year 'pulse' of major geological events, says study
* Canadian Broadcasting Corporation
The research team was led by Michael Rampino
from article:
"The Earth behaves cyclically, and major geologic events like earthquakes and volcanic eruptions that could lead to extinctions cluster in cycles, a new study has found.
snip
The research team analyzed mass geological episodes, such as fluctuations in the global sea level caused by changes in sea-floor spreading rates, that affected sea and land organisms. The extinction of dinosaurs dating back 66 million years or three cycles ago was one of the events the researchers looked at to find a pattern.
snip
According to the study, the most recent cluster of disastrous geological episodes was about seven to 10 million years ago, so it is safe to say that Earth is at least 15 million years away from experiencing this series of catastrophic events that will likely wipe out most, if not all, humankind.
Even if humans survive and develop the technology to deal with these events millions of years from now, Rampino said the Earth's pulse will keep on beating."

There's no mention in the article of how events like comet or asteroid strikes that impacted our
planet tie into this. See search results at:

Rather than feel helpless I think it's good for us humans to do all we can to minimize our effect on
our earthly environment since that's certainly something we do have control over.
