'The norms have broken down': Shock as journalists are arrested, injured by police

https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/media/journalists-at-several-protests-were-injured-arrested-by-police-while-trying-to-cover-the-story/2020/05/31/bfbc322a-a342-11ea-b619-3f9133bbb482_story.html

Ali Velshi knew almost instantly what had happened when he felt a sharp pain in his leg Saturday night in Minneapolis: He’d been hit with a rubber bullet fired by police.

“As a kid growing up in Canada, it felt familiar. It felt like a puck hit me in the shin,” said the MSNBC anchor, who was covering what he described as a peaceful march of protesters. “It hit in a place that hurt.”

Velshi, who suffered minor bruises, was one of at least a dozen journalists injured in cities across America this weekend — including a photographer who was blinded in one eye — as police fired rubber bullets, pepper spray and tear gas to quell unrest. Not since the 1960s, when the nation was racked by civil rights demonstrations, antiwar protests and urban riots, has the press been embroiled in so much violence on American shores.

In several cases, reporters appear to have been swept up in indiscriminate efforts by authorities to disperse crowds. But in a number of incidents, journalists were injured, harassed or arrested even after identifying themselves as reporters — a blatant violation of constitutional protections and long-standing ground rules that guide interactions between media and law enforcement officials.

This becomes more terrifying by the hour...

"There's a chance you can be labelled Antifa by law enforcement simply because you are protesting"

Celeste Headlee ✔@CelesteHeadlee

Couple things to remember: Antifa is not an organized group. You don't "join" Antifa, which means there's a chance you can be labelled Antifa by law enforcement simply because you are protesting. 1/2

Second, when you are labelled as a terrorist by the US govt, your rights can be severely curtailed. The rights you have taken for granted may not apply anymore if you are designated as a terrorist.

What does this mean? It means that the chances that innocent people will be labelled as terrorists and abused by the system may rise exponentially now.

If you are protesting, the only way you can feel safe is if you trust law enforcement to correctly identify and pursue only those people who intend to inflict harm to people and property,

The country is literally on fire. People are fed up w/ black folks & people of color being treated unfairly — a suffocating racism.

And, the White House called a lid at 11:32 am so we aren’t expected to see President Trump today. But, he is tweeting — lashing out at Democrats.

One person was killed in downtown Detroit after someone in an SUV fired shots into a crowd of people protesting George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis custody, a Detroit police spokeswoman said Saturday.

The shooting occurred about 11:30 p.m. Friday near Detroit’s Greektown entertainment district as officers were confronted with dozens of protesters, said Sgt. Nicole Kirkwood, a police department spokeswoman. She said an officer wasn’t involved in the shooting.

Kirkwood said the victim was a 19-year-old man, who was pronounced dead at the hospital. The suspect pulled up in a Dodge Durango and fired shots into the crowd, she said.

No details about the victim or the person who fired the shot or shots were immediately available, Kirkwood said.

Dozens of arrests were made and that police say many were not Detroit residents, WJBK-TV reported.

Maybe they should review the tapes of the lockdown protesters in Lansing a few weeks ago? Might find a suspect in them...

Some protesters, news crews, and medics in Minneapolis found themselves stranded after recent protests: The tires of their cars had been slashed.

Many assumed protesters were to blame. But videos reveal a different culprit: the police.

Minneapolis Police slashed every tire on my rental car, as well as every tire of every car in this parking lot.

For those asking how I know it was the police... police overtook this entire area shortly after the protest began. No protester would’ve been able to get in here after that. I got stopped by National Guard and was able to get through with my press badge. It was the @MinneapolisPD

The police also destroyed the entire medical encampment that was put up in the same parking lot. What a disgrace.

Video proof of police slashing tires.

National Security Adviser says "I don't think there's systemic racism" in America's police forces

National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien denied that systemic racism exists across the nation’s police forces, arguing instead that “a few bad apples” give the impression of racism among law enforcement officers, according to an interview he did with CNN on Sunday.

“No, I don’t think there’s systemic racism,” O’Brien said on CNN when asked directly by Jake Tapper whether he sees systemic racism as the problem.

“There are some bad cops that are racist and there are cops that maybe don’t have the right training,” O’Brien said.
As the country wakes up to survey the aftermath of the fifth night of protests against racism and police brutality nationwide, O’Brien claimed the violence that has broken out in some cities “is being driven by Antifa” and said he had not seen reports that white supremacists had inflamed tensions in some instances.

ICE keeps transferring detainees around the country, leading to COVID-19 outbreaks

The immigrants began to show symptoms in late April, about a week after arriving at the Rolling Plains Detention Center in Haskell, Texas.

They had been held in dorms with other recent transfers, according to a county official. First three detainees tested positive for COVID-19. Then 20 more. As of Friday, 41 immigrants detained at Rolling Plains had been infected. Just three county residents have tested positive.

In Pearsall, Texas, 350 miles south, transfers turned another detention center into a virus hotspot. Frio County had just a single confirmed case of COVID-19 in early April. Then two detainees who had recently been moved to Pearsall's South Texas ICE Processing Facility tested positive, ICE told county officials. Thirty-two immigrants have now been diagnosed, almost 90 percent of the state's official COVID-19 tally in Frio County.

"Our vulnerability is absolutely that detention center," said Frio County Commissioner Jose Asuncion. "Once that facility is exposed, the employees are coming in and out, there's no way to contain it."

In the past several months, while most Americans have been ordered to shelter at home, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has shuffled hundreds of people in its custody around the country. Immigrants have been transferred from California to Florida, Florida to New Mexico, Arizona to Washington State, Pennsylvania to Texas.

These transfers, which ICE says were sometimes done to curb the spread of coronavirus, have led to outbreaks in facilities in Texas, Ohio, Florida, Mississippi and Louisiana, according to attorneys, news reports and ICE declarations filed in federal courts.
