Duck Dynasty and The Deception of Conservatism

As I walked into Target on Saturday on my normal grocery shopping, I saw a huge billboard depiciting of all this Duck Dynasty merchandise. A thought popped into my head. I started to realize all of this Duck Dynasty is all about money and merchandising and notabout the cultural wars As Businessweek reports

Days after Phil Robertson, the patriarch of the featured family, unleashed a stream of controversial comments about gay people and African Americans in an interview with GQ magazine, Target’s (TGT) Web store is still stocked with DVDs and books tied to the popular TV show.

Meanwhile, Wal-Mart Stores (WMT) has a wider array of Duck Dynasy merchandise, including pink-camouflage linens and a child-size all-terrain vehicle.

STORY: How Cable TV's Ascendancy Explains the Duck Dynasty Culture War
Cracker Barrel Old Country Store (CBRL) quickly backtracked on a decision to yank Duck Dynasy merchandise from its restaurants, after a social media outcry.

“Our intent was to avoid offending, but that’s just what we’ve done,” the company posted on its Facebook (FB) page Dec. 22. “ … You flat out told us we were wrong. We listened.”

Meanwhile, a Carnival (CCL) cruise ship featuring the Duck Commander gang will set sale July 17. Premier Christian Cruises, which chartered the vessel, said on its website that the voyage is sold out and berths are no longer available"

These guys are selling merchandise at my local Target in Anaheim which is very diverse community that does not have a large demographic that it is in Duck Dynasty key demographic.

Yet, they are all over the place selling out cruises and selling merchandise at target. I might be cynical, but this whole Robertson scandal might be a massive PR blitz to sell merchandise.

It really means that these guys are not the conservative heroes that the right-wing claim they are. Rather, they are free-market swindlers who sell the "Duck Dynasty" to gulliable conservative audience that wants to believe in the concept of backwoods Southern values.

It is people who want to return the images of the Southern rural believe of God, Guns, and freedom. It is mythology that Southern people want to believe in to hold on their traditional values.

In fact, the people who follow the Robertson clan are actually being duped by the system that they supposed to worship as a "God". The Robertson put on the masequade of God, Guns, and faith as just another to make a quick buck off a gullable and eager public that is looking for someway to hold onto fading away of traditional values.

The capitalist system that is promoted Duck Dynasty is a imperfect system that needs extensive government oversight to prevent it from running amuck. The Duck Dynasty people are just another group of merchants just trying to quick buck of the American Public.

The question that people need to ask themselves: Why I am supporting these people when the ir real purpose is to make money off me?

But is that the point of any good capitalist? And Phil Robertson is excellent capitalist and should be studied as a case study in B-School of successful product marketing.

Remember Do Not Drink and Drive This Holiday

This is why you do not want to drink and drive. CBS 2 reports

"MISSION VIEJO (CBSLA.com) — Authorities say a suspected drunken driver plowed his vehicle into a home in southern Orange County, killing one person.
The overnight crash occurred about 3 a.m. Sunday in the 26000 block of Pacato Drive in Mission Viego.
Police believe the male driver, identified by police as 27-year-old Kourosh Keshmiri of Mission Viejo, was headed down Olivera Street at a high rate of speed when he lost control and plowed into the bedroom of the home.
“It was a big bang … like ba-boom! It was like something exploded. And I didn’t think anything of it and I looked outside and I saw a lot of sheriffs and the fire department,” said Don Loessberg, a neighbor.
One man was killed. His identity has not been revealed. A second person inside the home was uninjured"

This is what happens you drink and drive. This is what happens you deal with untreated alcoholism. Please do not drink drive or you will kill somebody. If you live in my state and this is what happens to you

PC 191.5(d) of the California Penal Code states

"d) A person convicted of violating subdivision (a) who has one or
more prior convictions of this section or of paragraph (1) of
subdivision (c) of Section 192, subdivision (a) or (b) of Section
192.5 of this code, or of violating Section 23152 punishable under
Sections 23540, 23542, 23546, 23548, 23550, or 23552 of, or convicted
of Section 23153 of, the Vehicle Code, shall be punished by
imprisonment in the state prison for a term of 15 years to life.
Article 2.5 (commencing with Section 2930) of Chapter 7 of Title 1 of
Part 3 shall apply to reduce the term imposed pursuant to this
subdivision"

Please do not get behind the kill when you are drunk. It is something that I have done and I have the consequences of my actions. Because of my actions, I will face the what is called the Watson Rule if I drink and kill somebody.

To get parole, you must meed the requirement Section 8(d) of the California Constituion

" (b) No decision of the parole authority of this State with respect
to the granting, denial, revocation, or suspension of parole of a
person sentenced to an indeterminate term upon conviction of murder
shall become effective for a period of 30 days, during which the
Governor may review the decision subject to procedures provided by
statute. The Governor may only affirm, modify, or reverse the
decision of the parole authority on the basis of the same factors
which the parole authority is required to consider. The Governor
shall report to the Legislature each parole decision affirmed,
modified, or reversed, stating the pertinent facts and reasons for
the action.

You will spend the rest of your life in prison for a terrible action and burden with a terrible guilt and burden that you can get never let go even working through the steps of AA with another sponsor. And you need the governor signature to get out which means that you need an outside sponsor who will work steps with you for 15 years and is willing to submit oral or written testimony that will submitted to the parole board and the governor to vouch for your release. That is high threshold to get for release and few people

The statements that I just made to pertain to California, but other states have similar laws when it comes DUI. DUI is a horrible action to do given how people to get intoxicated behind the wheel and kill somebody.

This New Year's, please do not drink drive.

Shopping at the Discount Stores In the Struggle to Remain Frugal, But Could It be Wrong?

Do intentionally avoid shopping at stores like Walmart and Target because they do not pay their sufficient wages and only shop at unionized stores as much as possible?

Or do not shop at fast food places because they do not let their workers organize?

Would you willing be pay 10%-20% more for that Big Mac just so that worker has the ability to get a living wage? Or pay $1.50 for that microwave meal that costs a $1.00 at Walmart

There are honest questions that I have struggled with when I intentionally shop at Walmart and Target for my food. I intentionally shopped their because I was unemployed and I try to save as much money as possible. I eat off that dang dollar menu at McDonalds in order to save money.

I am very cheap and has saved me money that I can use spend towards other things. As a progressive, I am committing an act that is "an immoral act considered to be a transgression". It is not a transgression in a religious sense, but rather a transgression against my own political viewpoints even though I am trying to frugal myself to save money for the future.

By the way, I now have a job, but I still struggle with this because I also forcing myself to be stingy because I have to self-fund my own retirement on the income that I make.

Some Employers Are Just Jerks

Some bosses can real jerks as reported by CBS Chicago

(CBS) – The top executive for a restaurant chain that abruptly fired nearly 20 of its Chicago workers right before the holidays – by email – has apologized for the “insensitive and poorly planned” way it was handled.
The workers at Snarf’s sub shop, 600 W. Chicago Ave., were notified electronically over the weekend that the restaurant was closing Monday so that it could be renovated and changed into something new. That left 18 employees without jobs, right before Christmas.
In a written statement released Wednesday, Snarf’s owner and CEO Jim Seidel says the Colorado-based company will offer the former workers a week’s wages. He said poor business at the River North sandwich shop prompted the company to close the location and “reconcept” it.
“It was insensitive and poorly planned,” Seidel said of the firings. “We recognize now we acted rashly. For this, we apologize to our employees and to our loyal customers who we know we’ve disappointed.”

What a jerk! American needs less a#@#hole bosses like this guy these

“I think that’s pathetic and it really angers me,” said Jessica’s dad Mark Atkins.

Jessica was driving home to Westfield from Butler University around 4 a.m. Tuesday morning. She noticed someone was following her. She said she made it to her neighborhood, and that’s when she saw flashing lights.
