Volunteer autism registry meant to improve relations with police

Supporters of a new volunteer registry for people with autism say it will improve safety for those with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and lead to more constructive and informed interactions with members of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary.

The registry was announced Thursday during a news conference at the Elaine Dobbin Centre for Autism in St. John's.

RNC officer in Dane Spurrell autism case criticized again
It's a one-year pilot project for the St. John's region, and is the result of a partnership between the Autism Society of Newfoundland and Labrador and the RNC.

It's the latest step in an effort to improve relations between individuals and families with ASD and the police, and follows a high-profile incident in 2009 where an officer detained a young man with autism, believing he was drunk and belligeren

No easy wins for women in discrimination lawsuits

Ellen Pao thought after three years of legal maneuvering, she had a fighting chance of beating Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers.

Many observers of the trial, which lasted throughout March, thought so, too -- convinced by her allegations of sexism and bad-boy behavior at one of Silicon Valley's most powerful venture capital firms.

The San Francisco jury of six men and six women didn't buy it. They rejected Pao's claims that her ex-employer discriminated against her and later fired her after she'd complained about a pervasive double-standard in its treatment of men and women. Pao had sued the firm -- which backed notable tech companies from Amazon to Google to Zynga -- for $16 million, in part to compensate for lost income and in part "to bring Kleiner Perkins to the right path."

Now Kleiner Perkins is telling Pao, 45, she owes the firm nearly $1 million in legal costs unless she promises not to appeal. Pao is "considering" the proposal, according to her spokeswoman

Al Jazeera America, Its Newsroom in Turmoil, Is Now the News

Almost two years later, the ratings have not come, nor have the profits. The station has been a nonfactor in news, drawing about 30,000 viewers a night. To make matters worse, in the last week, a lawsuit and an exodus of top executives have brought to the surface a series of grievances that employees say reflects a deep dysfunction in management of the newsroom, undermining the network’s mission.

“I didn’t want to be there anymore because I didn’t like the culture of fear," said Marcy McGinnis, the network’s former senior vice president for news gathering, who resigned on Monday. “People are afraid to lose their jobs if they cross Ehab.”

Ms. McGinnis, who most recently served as Al Jazeera America’s senior vice president for outreach, said that the newsroom was in total “disarray behind the scenes,” a view echoed by almost a dozen current and former employees interviewed.

Ms. McGinnis, who formerly worked at CBS News, was the third top Al Jazeera official in the last week to announce a departure. On Thursday, the chief of human resources, Diana Lee, and the executive vice president for communications, Dawn Bridges, resigned. On the same day, a former employee sued the company, claiming he had been fired after he complained to human resources about a powerful colleague. The complaint contains accusations of anti-Semitism, sexual discrimination and episodes of retribution against employees.

King County home prices surge, just shy of 2007 peak

The median price of single-family homes sold in King County hit $480,000 in April, just $1,000 shy of the peak set in July 2007 before the housing bubble burst.

April’s median price was 9 percent higher than in March and 11.5 percent higher than a year ago, according to data from the Northwest Multiple Listing Service.

Buyers have hit the gas, fearing higher interest rates and offering premium prices in the face of a record low inventory of homes for sale.

“This is a historic moment in time,” said J. Lennox Scott, CEO of John L. Scott brokerage. “Housing is in a pressure cooker in the metro area. We’re going to be here for a while.”

Iran bans 'homosexual' and 'devil worshipping' hairstyles

“Homosexual” and “devil worshipping” hairstyles have been banned in Iran, alongside tattoos, sunbed treatments and plucked eyebrows for men, which are all deemed un-Islamic.

The move – aimed at spiky cuts – follows a trend where, each summer, Iranian authorities get tough on men and women sporting clothing or hairdos seen as imitations of western lifestyles.

In 2010, Iran banned ponytails, mullets and long, gelled hair for men, but allowed 1980s-style floppy fringes or quiffs.

Iran’s moderate president, Hassan Rouhani, has spoken against such crackdowns, stating that the police’s duty is to implement the law and not enforce Islam. But hardliners have remained defiant

Ohio killer caught after more than 50 years on the run

Source: BBC

Frank Freshwaters, 79, escaped in 1959 and was briefly held by West Virginia authorities in 1975 before he was freed and disappeared again.
He had been living under an assumed name in Florida for at least 20 years.
Brevard County officials said they created a ruse to get Freshwaters to sign papers to check his fingerprints.
After a week of surveillance, US marshals and Florida confronted him with an old booking photo as he left his trailer home in rural Melbourne, Florida, asking whether he had seen the man.
"They showed him the pic, and he said he hadn't seen that guy in a long time," Major Tod Goodyear of the Brevard County Sheriff's office said.
