In 1981, following a horrendous motorcycle accident, I was unable to work for several
months -- essentially bed/couchbound until my leg healed enough for mobility with
crutches.
.
So no money -- right around the holiday season -- and I hit on a gift idea that people
absolutely loved -- asked me in subsequent years if I were going to do that again.
.
.
.
It takes time -- but that time can be TV-watching time (which is what much of mine
was).
.
Popcorn/cranberry garlands.
.
Heavy sewing thread (and I found it wise to double that over). A relatively large
sewing needle (too large and you start splitting the popcorn). Cranberries (and
they usually go on sale seasonally for about 99 cents for a 1 lb bag). And generic
stovetop/airpopped popcorn.
.
I've found that two cranberries/two popcorns/two cranberries/two popcorns, etc. etc.
is the nicest looking ratio.

A simple and elegant (and CHEAP) gift.
.
.
You can include a little card letting them know that you thought about them a lot while
you were making their gift.
.
EVERYBODY loves a home-made gift -- and that is one of the reasons. I did have one
fairly materialistic and shallow co-worker who, on finding that another co-worker had
made a very cute (and very much ADORED by the recipient) birthday card for his wife,
commented with -- "What... he couldn't spring two bucks for a Hallmark?"

When the season's over, every website I went to recommended hanging them outside
for the birds to chow down on, but I'm not entirely SURE about that (I seem to recall
that the popcorn is empty calories for them -- though the cranberries are EXCELLENT
nutritionally).

Watching "North Dallas 40" on NBCSN -- tuned in 10 mins late... it started 15 mins ago.

Absolutely the finest football movie of all time (IMneverHO), but so NOT just a football
movie that it's an incredible movie with general audience appeal.

Highly entertaining and a thinly-veiled semi-fictional "expose" of the Dallas Cowboys
corporatization of football, it has some great acting by some football legends. Even
the singer Mac Davis shines as the quarterback.

And NOBODY grunts like Nick Nolte grunts.

Calexico and Mariachi Luz de Luna -- "El Cascabel"
.
The drummer and the Anglo guitarist in this video started the band "Calexico" in the 90's in
Tucson (they're now based out of Californai). They play in different incarnations -- touring
with varying numbers of band members. They are BELOVED here in Tucson. They're known
for mixing Tejano, Americana and Indie rock music into their compositions.
.
Once, they were playing a club here when a big fight broke out on the floor. They took
their wireless instruments and meandered through the crowd without missing a beat --
stopping what had become a fairly nasty brawl by the sheer force of "Scuse me... comin'
through. 'Scuse me... comin' through. 'Scuse me... comin' through. Etc."
.
This video shows them performing with the band "Mariachi Luz de Luna" in London. Some
of the cooler restaurants in town (not necessarily expensive ones) have mariachi bands
with 3 to 4 people roaming through the dining room -- putting out a vibe of everything
from raucous to romantic.
.
Kinda embarassing when they come to your table (IRL, I'm much shyer than you might
imagine)... but really cool, too.
.
So much of the traditional music here is blatantly joyous and FUN!!!

Someone made a mention about Mennonites in another thread and it brought back good memories...

Erica. I was in my late-20's and she was in her early 40's and had recently divorced her
husband of 20+ years. She had been raised pretty liberal mainstream Mennonite and,
with her newfound freedom, was curious about EVERYTHING that she had repressed
before. Everything.
.
It was a wonderful match.
.
She had a GREAT family, and they often had me over for their HUGE Sunday dinners.
Her Mom was a pretty traditional farm housewife and would make what for Mennonites
were fairly normal Sunday dinners -- maybe 15-20 different dishes to choose from.
.
Her Dad was a minister or pastor of a church or whatever the Mennonite equivalent for
that position was. I was not religious at all -- but I absolutely LOVED hearing him say
Grace before the meal -- they were always these fantastic secular reminders of many
of the things that we could all be thankful for.
.
One of her brothers was gay and his partner was as welcome as I was (and he was no
dummy either -- he also showed up for as many of those fantastic feasts as he could).
Eventually, the elders of their church approached her Dad and said he would either
have to renounce his gay son or leave his position in that church.
.
Without hesitation, he told them (I'm paraphrasing a little here) to go fuck themselves.
.
.
.
That whole family was such a positive experience for me in so many ways.
.
