Suicidal man was ready to jump. So 13 truckers parked under the bridge, Michigan cops say

Source: Miami Herald

Law enforcement and truckers in Michigan teamed up to save the life of a suicidal man.

Police first heard of a man standing on a bridge that goes over a Detroit freeway at about 1 a.m. Tuesday, according to Fox2. So officers quickly put a plan in action to stop him from doing it.

Lt. Mike Shaw, a Michigan State Police spokesman, told The Detroit News that his department blocked traffic on Interstate 696 and then asked truckers who had been stopped to head for the overpass.

Thirteen different trucks arrived at the scene and parked under the bridge to shorten the fall if the suicidal man decided to jump, police say. The man decided to willingly leave the bridge and police took him to a nearby hospital for evaluation, according to Fox2.

From auction block to handcuffs: How a Ga. couple was jailed after a legal purchase

How did a public auction for a car land the bidders in jail?

"You had the same police department arresting you on questionable charges, and then another officer from that same police department soliciting a bribe from you on recording?" 11Alive's Brendan Keefe asked.

"Yeah," replied Michelle Pierce.

A couple bought a car and ended up in handcuffs -- but before long, a police officer would be wearing them. 11Alive Chief Investigator Brendan Keefe has been on this story every step of the way for nearly two years.

This story started out as what we thought was a simple consumer affairs issue over the title and ownership of an automobile before it began to take a number of twists and turns.

Source: Macon Telegraph

Flags will be flying at half-staff on all Georgia government buildings Friday in honor of a Fort Valley State University student killed while coming to the aid of three women.

Citing the heroism of Donnell M. Phelps, Governor Nathan Deal signed an executive order Thursday to honor the slain freshman studying in the Agriculture Engineering Technology department.

"Mr. Phelps will be remembered for the heroic actions he displayed through aiding and preventing the assault and possible deaths of three women, of which resulted in a senseless and tragic loss of his own life," the governor's order stated.

Phelps' accused killer, Joseph Anthony Scott, allegedly was trying to grope three women coming out of the campus cafeteria late Tuesday afternoon.

Green Beret who beat up accused child rapist can stay in Army

Source: Army Times

The Army has reversed course and decided to allow a Green Beret to stay in uniform, months after his reprimand for roughing up an accused child rapist in Afghanistan.

Sgt. 1st Class Charles Martland found out last August that he was to be booted out of service, a casualty of the Army’s Qualitative Management Program, an involuntary separation measure for soldiers with black marks on their records. Since then, the soldier has been fighting to remain in the Army.

The Army Board for Correction of Military Records reviewed Martland’s case and decided to remove the soldier from the QMP list, confirmed Army spokesman Lt. Col. Jerry Pionk in an emailed statement Thursday night. The board's action "will allow him to remain in the Army," Pionk said.

Martland has admitted he lost his cool on his 2011 deployment to Konduz province, Afghanistan. That's when he and his captain struck an Afghan local police officer — one who had allegedly confessed to raping a boy and then beating the child's mother for telling authorities. Martland said that he and the detachment commander, Capt. Daniel Quinn, received a “relief for cause” from that 2011 deployment for the assault, according to documentation provided to Army Times.

This Afghan even laughed about the abuse when originally confronted.

Martland should have never been threatened for standing up for the child & his mother

US Jewish philanthropist bought winning Powerball ticket for employee

Source: JPost.com

One of the record-breaking Powerball lottery jackpot in the United States became wealthy overnight thanks to the generosity of her boss, one of the American Jewish community’s leading philanthropists.

Shlomo Rechnitz, a health care magnate who owns 80 assisted living facilities throughout California, purchased nearly 18,000 lottery tickets for all of his employees, one of which happened to contain the winning numbers.

Rechnitz made sure to give all of his employees throughout California an opportunity to go for the jackpot. In areas where there were no 24-hour convenience stores, he offered local mini-marts cash on an hourly basis in order to stay open so as to enable his workers a chance to buy the lotto ticket.

Each ticket that Rechnitz purchased was attached to a card on which he wrote: “We will provide the ticket. You provide the dream.”

Muslim family's encounter with Gwinnett (Atl) police goes viral

Source: Atlanta Journal

A Muslim family's interaction with Gwinnett police officers on Thanksgiving weekend has gone viral.

In a Facebook post, Georgia resident Zanub Rizvi wrote that she was driving her daughter and mother-in-law to a religious gathering when she was rear-ended.

All the police officers and paramedics that responded to the accident were white males, she said.

She said it was "obvious" from their dress that they were a Muslim family, but she was "surprised" by how they treated to her.

Rancher’s wife: ‘I saw them murder my husband’

Source: Miami Herald

The family of an Adams County rancher involved in an encounter with two sheriff’s deputies says the deputies killed him in a “completely unjustified” shooting.
Survivors of Jack Yantis, the 62-year-old who died a week ago in the darkness on U.S. 95 north of Council, say they will pursue claims against Adams County for Yantis’ death.

Donna Yantis spent her 63rd birthday Thursday at Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise, where she has been recovering from a heart attack she suffered after her husband was killed. Provided by the Yantis family
Family members have shared with the Statesman their account of what happened last Sunday night. The account is in written statements prepared with attorneys the family hired after the incident, a video statement Donna Yantis made from her Boise hospital bed, and a draft transcript the lawyers prepared of one family member’s account of what happened.

The Statesman also interviewed several family members, including Rowdy Paradis, a nephew of the couple’s who said he witnessed the shootings.
“Law enforcement should be trained to de-escalate situations,” said Rowdy Paradis. “In this case, I stood 10 feet away and watched two deputies escalate the situation and needlessly kill a man.”
