Court Mistakenly Gave Potential Jurors Access to Ahmaud Arbery's Mental Health History

The Georgia county court trying the alleged murderers of Ahmaud Arbery has mistakenly exposed potential jurors to suppressed evidence, including his mental health history, which a judge banned from the trial.

Jury candidates who visit the Glynn County Superior Court website seeking information about what time and what day they need to show up can view—in just a couple clicks—all the motions filed so far in the murder trial of Travis and Gregory McMichael and William “Roddie” Bryan.

Those documents include specifics about Arbery’s mental health and prior criminal history that a judge ordered suppressed and never brought up in court.

The motions also include evidence that prosecutors would like to use against the McMichaels, including a Confederate flag vanity plate on Travis’ truck and how often the father and son had used their licensed firearms. The judge has yet to make a ruling on the admissibility of that evidence.

If a jury candidate were to read that information, it would make them ineligible to sit on the jury that will determine the McMichaels’ and Bryan’s fates. And if that person were to be chosen for the jury, it could be grounds for a mistrial, although that’s unlikely, legal experts told VICE News.

Why Did D.C. Cops Shoot Into A Moving Car And Kill An'Twan Gilmore?

In the early hours of Aug. 25, where Florida and New York avenues meet in northeast Washington, D.C., police approached a person who was either sleeping or unconscious in an idling car.

They found An’Twan Gilmore, a 27-year-old Black man, “unresponsive,” his foot on the brake pedal. Police say there was a gun visible in his waistband.

Body camera footage shows officers knocking on the door of Gilmore’s black BMW. The car is surrounded by at least five officers. One of them says “Where is the gun at?” again and again. He tells other officers to move back from the car because they might “scare him.”

The officer then says he “can’t see his hands” and tells his colleagues to knock on the window. Officers attempt to rouse Gilmore, and the car moves forward slightly. Police shout “Don’t move!” repeatedly, and the car stops.

But then the car moves forward again — and almost instantly, police begin shooting. In less than a second, one officer, later identified as Enis Jervic, fired multiple shots at Gilmore at close range. Gilmore was shot a total of 10 times. The car kept moving forward and eventually came to a stop at the end of the street, where police had blocked the path with at least two squad cars.

Officers took Gilmore to an area hospital, but he died from his injuries.

The gun that Gilmore had on his person was recovered from his waistband after the shooting. Officers say they’re unsure if Gilmore ever actually removed it from his waistband. The investigation is ongoing, police told HuffPost.

Alex Murdaugh denied bond in alleged theft of housekeeper's settlement funds

Alex Murdaugh, the embattled South Carolina lawyer accused of plotting his own killing as part of a life insurance scheme, was denied bond Tuesday after facing new charges tied to the embezzling of millions of dollars related to the death of his housekeeper.

Circuit Court Judge Clifton Newman ordered Murdaugh to undergo a psychiatric evaluation following concerns he presents a potential danger to himself and the community. Murdaugh had already been out on another $20,000 personal recognizance bond in September and was allowed to continue treatment at an out-of-state drug detox center for opioid addiction.

Authorities arrested him in Orlando, Florida, on Thursday and charged him with two felony counts of obtaining property by false pretenses, which each carry a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

Murdaugh, 53, masked and wearing a jail jumpsuit, did not speak during the hearing.

The Muradaughs' longtime housekeeper and nanny, Gloria Satterfield, died in February 2018 in what was initially described as an accidental fall. Attorneys for her adult sons, Michael "Tony" Satterfield and Brian Harriott, said they received none of the proceeds from a $4.3 million settlement they said was orchestrated in secret by Murdaugh. Attorneys for the sons say they are owed more than $2.7 million.

People are fed up': Dollar General workers push to unionize amid hostility from above

The low-cost retailer Dollar General has the highest number of store locations in America, with over 17,600 stores in 46 states, and its golden and black logo has become ubiquitous across the country.

The company’s rapid footprint is continuing to grow, as a staggering nearly one out of every three retail stores opening in America this year is now a Dollar General. All that business generates dizzying revenue too: the company reported $33.7bn in sales last fiscal year.

Currently, none of the thousands of Dollar General retail stores are unionized, as the company is aggressively opposed to unions with a company philosophy of remaining “union free”. Yet a handful of workers at a Dollar General store in Barkhamsted, Connecticut, are pushing to change that, with a union election scheduled for 22 October to join the United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW).

Five workers at the store are currently eligible to vote in the election, as a sixth employee was abruptly fired just a day before a 9 October cut-off to be eligible. They requested to remain anonymous for fear of risking other job prospects.

Natural immunity is good. Getting vaccinated after being sick with COVID-19 is better.

Many people have caught COVID-19 over the past 20 months, despite their best efforts, or because they didn't take enough precautions against the coronavirus.

Data is just starting to emerge about how protected they may be against another infection.

As with most illnesses, contracting COVID-19 provides immune "memory" that helps protect against a future infection. But it's still unclear how sick a person has to get with COVID-19 to develop enough immune memory to be protective and for how long. That's why the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends even people who have had COVID-19 get vaccinated against it.

A growing body of research suggests infection plus vaccination provides the strongest protection against a wide range of variants, possibly for a long time.

Pretty sure we had Covid before it was "officially" here...all the symptoms. Now fully vaccinated, we should be in good shape.

'Nuremberg 2.0': Why COVID Conspiracy Theorists See This Lawyer As Their Saviour

Lisa, a supermarket worker from Dublin, is determined not to get the coronavirus vaccine because she subscribes to the conspiracy theory that it’s a population control mechanism designed by Bill Gates.

But the 50-year-old, who says she was first introduced to conspiracy theories – or as she terms it, “what’s really happening” – through pro-life Facebook groups, has been feeling increasingly anxious since further restrictions were placed on the unvaccinated in Ireland, where about three-quarters of the population have received both jabs.

One person is giving her hope: a German lawyer called Reiner Fuellmich. “There’s just something about him, the way he speaks, that made me trust him,” Lisa, who asked not to be identified by her full name because of potential repercussions in her personal life, explained over the phone.

“I really do think he could be our knight in shining armour.”

Fuellmich isn’t a familiar name to most people. But for many of those sucked into conspiracy theories around COVID-19, he has become one of the most influential figures in the world. Thousands of people worldwide are clinging to the fantasy that he will soon be leading a major prosecution of world leaders, scientists and journalists, placing them on trial for “crimes against humanity” for their role in supposedly engineering a false pandemic.

Indigenous Nation Stopped BC Social Workers From Apprehending Child, 6, on Their Land

Leaders and community members of Gitxsan Nation gathered in northeastern B.C. on Saturday evening to block social workers from apprehending a 6-year-old girl and “end the tragic legacy of our children being stolen.”

The Git'luuhl'um'hetxwit house group, or wilp, of the Gitxsan Nation and the Gitanmaax Band Council—two distinct governing bodies in Gitxsan Nation—joined forces in the northeastern B.C. region to prevent the Ministry of Children and Family Development from taking the child into government custody. The young girl is now in joint protective custody within her community, according to the Git'luuhl'um'hetxwit media account.

“We have drawn the line to ensure that all our children have access to family, culture, language and their traditional territories,” the media release says.

According to the post, the girl is safe with loved ones and matriarchs.

“She is learning our language, playing with cousins, and hearing the stories of her ancestors,” the statement says. “Never again will Canada steal our future generations.”

Knoxville restaurant closed after employees say they've received late and faulty paychecks

Wings Over Knoxville on Cumberland Avenue is closed until further notice after employees say they’ve been receiving late and faulty paychecks. They say they’re struggling to pay monthly bills and many of them are worried about what could happen if this continues.

Employees at the restaurant say they haven’t been paid consistently in months. The owner of the restaurant, Pete Lodice, confirms, saying he’s been having trouble getting paychecks out on time, blaming the COVID-19 pandemic for financial hardships.

Employees told WATE they were given paychecks last week, but they bounced, leaving their accounts with negative balances. Now, they’re shutting the restaurant down entirely until they start seeing some consistency in their pay.

“They come late and majority of the time they’re late, they’re wrong,” general manager Shawnte James said.

In a statement, owner Pete Iodice says it’s something he’s working on fixing.

Sharp-eyed diver finds crusader's ancient sword on Israeli seabed

A sword believed to have belonged to a crusader who sailed to the Holy Land almost a millennium ago has been recovered from the Mediterranean seabed thanks to an eagle-eyed amateur diver, the Israel Antiquities Authority has said.

Though encrusted with marine organisms, the metre-long blade, hilt and handle were distinctive enough to notice after undercurrents apparently shifted sands that had concealed it.

Sinclair Broadcast Group dealing with weekend data breach, ransomware attack

Sinclair Broadcast Group said Monday that it's suffered a data breach and is still working to determine what information the data contained.

The company said it started investigating the potential security incident on Saturday and on Sunday it identified certain servers and workstations that were encrypted with ransomware. It also found that certain office and operational networks were disrupted. Data was also taken from the company’s network.

The Hunt Valley, Maryland-based company owns and/or operates 21 regional sports network and owns, operates and/or provides services to 185 television stations in 86 markets.

Nashville, Tennessee’s WZTV put out a notice on its website Monday about “serious technical issues” at the TV station affecting its ability to stream content.

“We are also currently unable to access our email and your phone calls to the station,” it said.
