Pussy Riot has released a new video ahead of the Russian court's verdict against opposition leader Alexei Navalny. The video, "Witches of Pussy Riot Clean Manezhka," calls for people to demonstrate outside the Kremlin on Tuesday. The clip features group members Masha Alekhina and Nadya Tolokonnikova cleaning Moscow's Manezh Square in preparation for the protests. “This is above all a propaganda video,” Tolokonnikova told BuzzFeed News.

Maria Baronova, an opposition activist, and Elena Kostyuchenko, a journalist and LGBT activist, join the band for the song, which repeats the same four words over in Russian: "Clean. Honest. Word. Deed."

Pussy Riot activist arrested after pro-Alexei Navalny protests in Moscow

Source: Guardian UK

Twenty activists including Masha Alyokhina from Pussy Riot were arrested in Moscow on Wednesday yesterday, after staging an all-night protest against the conviction of the Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny and his brother Oleg.

Several thousand anti-Putin demonstrators gathered in central Moscow on Tuesday after a court handed Navalny – Vladimir Putin’s most high-profile opponent – a suspended sentence, but jailed his brother for three-and-a-half years. Navalny broke a house arrest order to attend the rally and was swiftly detained. Riot police arrested more than 100 people.

A small group of activists including Alyokhina, and the anti-Putin blogger Arseny Bobrovsky, took refuge in a giant Christmas ball on Moscow’s Manezh Square, directly in front of the Kremlin. Despite freezing conditions they spent the night inside. They held up banners saying that they would “occupy the globe” until Oleg Navalny was freed.

At 8am Moscow time, the police moved in and arrested those inside[https://twitter.com/annalena08/status/550177932350869504/photo/1]. “They came from two directions, took everyone’s documents, and then literally used their arms to drag us out,” Alyokhina told the news portal Mediazona. She added: “I consider all those who came out and spent the night in the ball to be heroes. It was -20C.”

Putin's Neo-Nazis Kidnap and Torture 1,500 Transsexual and Gay People

In an astounding claim, the Russian government yesterday defended a neo-Nazi group for orchestrating nearly 1,500 mostly-anti-gay kidnappings across Russia in the past 18 months.

By some estimates, 24 million Russians lost their lives to the Nazis in World War II.

The Russians, angered over a British television documentary exposing a nationwide anti-gay kidnapping ring, then denied that the neo-Nazi abductions had occurred at all, claiming that there is no proof of the crimes, even though the abductors filmed their crimes and posted them widely on Russian social media network VK.com and YouTube.

And the videos, at least on VK, but some on YouTube as well, can still be found online.

First Black Elected Official Defies Racism In Russia
Because the police and justice system are riddled with corruption, there's a feeling that if something happens to you on the street, you have no place to turn.

I was especially worried about two gay friends who came to visit me in Moscow. The city has a history of harassment against openly gay men. And the same goes for blacks.

Even though for decades the Soviet Union recruited African students to come to universities and learn about communism, there are very few black faces in Russia today.

Skinheads are active in the capital and elsewhere, and blacks have been harassed on the street and beaten on trains and the subway.

Pussy Riot protesters cleared of religious hatred charge

Source: Reuters

(Reuters) - Two women from Russia's Pussy Riot protest group who were jailed for a song deriding President Vladimir Putin were cleared in a Moscow court on Friday of inciting religious hatred.

But the court knocked only one month off their two-year sentences, upholding a charge of hooliganism.

Maria Alyokhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova spent nearly two years in prison after performing a protest song against Putin in Moscow's main cathedral in 2012.

Many in the West criticized the harshness of the sentence, saying it was evidence of a clamp-down on dissent.

Pussy Riot: “Our government thought that they were going to just break us”

Source: Salon

Maria Alyokhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova of Pussy Riot were on “Today” Thursday morning for an interview with Matt Lauer; they discussed their time in prison and how the Russian state’s efforts to repress them only emboldened their activism.

“The first thing I want to say is, I really, sincerely wanted Russia to be free,” Tolokonnikova told Lauer. “This idea we heard about free Russia, it only became stronger in our cells during the two years we were in jail. If our government thought that they were going to just break us down by jailing us, it didn’t work out at all.”

Alyokhina and Tolokonnikova are in New York City for Tina Brown’s “Women in the World Summit.”
