Supporting Republican candidates

First, I am well aware of the TOS.

However I have seen some posts stating that some specific issues are worth supporting Republican if they agree with Democrats on those issues. I vehemently oppose single issue voting but always allow that I may not know all of the answers.

To DU members in general,

Is there one, or more, single issue(s) which warrant supporting a Republican over a typical Democratic candidate.

{To be clear, I am referring to an otherwise average Democratic candidate. Not splitting hairs over a DINO or off the charts left-wing candidate.}

Federal judge denies UT professors' request to block implementation of campus carry

Federal judge denies UT professors' request to block implementation of campus carry

AUSTIN — An effort by three University of Texas at Austin professors to block the implementation of the state's divisive campus carry law has failed, after a federal judge on Monday denied their request for a preliminary injunction.

U.S. District Judge Lee Yeakel, ruling just two days before classes begin at UT, rejected the key arguments made so far against the firearms measure. Among those were the notions that allowing guns in classrooms violates free speech and equal protection rights.

Though the lawsuit to overturn the law remains alive, the judge said the professors had "failed to establish a substantial likelihood of ultimate success on the merits of their asserted claims."

"It appears to the court that neither the Texas Legislature nor the Board of Regents has overstepped its legitimate power to determine where a licensed individual may carry a concealed handgun in an academic setting," he wrote in an 11-page opinion.

This ruling affects an injuction the three professors requested until a full trial can be held.

Gabby Giffords’ Gun Control Group Endorses Two Republican Senators

Gabby Giffords’ Gun Control Group Endorses Two Republican Senators

The gun control group founded by Gabby Giffords and her husband, Mark Kelly, has endorsed two Republican Senators in tough re-election fights as it seeks to expand its outreach.

In an op-ed on CNN Monday, Americans for Responsible Solutions backed Sens. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania and Mark Kirk of Illinois, who are both facing tough re-election races in a year in which Democrats hope to regain control of the Senate.

The two sitting Senators voted in favor of gun control proposals after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, where 20 children were killed.

“In the wake of the tragedy at Sandy Hook, Republican Sens. Pat Toomey and Mark Kirk broke from the gun lobby and supported a bill to help prevent felons, domestic abusers and the dangerously mentally ill from obtaining firearms at gun shows and online,” wrote Giffords and Kelly in the op-ed.

http://time.com/4461211/gun-control-pat-toomey-mark-kirk-gabby-giffords/

The Giffords are naturally free to support whomever they choose. DU TOS is to support Democrats, but naturally GCR"A" host approves of supporting Republicans over Democrats.

Gun control is a single issue, party is irrelevant (as we saw when Gun Control cheered the election of teapartier Tom Cotton, showing Sen. Pryor what happens to Dems who don't support all gun control)

But let's look at how the Democratic opposition stacks up.
-Tammy Duckworth, Democrat, combat vet, lost both legs in Iraq. Pro-choice, pro-ACA, supports comprehensive immigration reform with a pathway to citizenship for those in the country illegally, would admit 100,000 Syrian refugees into the United States. Rated 7% by the NRA, indicating a pro-gun control voting record.

-Katie McGinty, Democrat, has not held an elected office. Served as an environmental advisor to Vice President Al Gore and President Bill Clinton, pro-business, supports gay marriage, Affordable Care Act, she is also pro-choice. Scored 100% on CeaseFire Pennsylvania survey, Expanding state background checks to cover the private sale of long guns, Requiring background checks for ammunition sales, Requiring firearms dealers to tell the police when a customer fails a background check

So someone explain how Gun Control is not single issue? Why should we (Democrats) support Republicans (who happen to have supported some gun control) over these Democrats?

Latest hunting controversy

12-Year-Old Girl Faces Online Backlash Over Hunting Photos

A 12-year-old girl who likes to hunt big game with her father sparked an online firestorm after posting photos of herself online posing with a giraffe and a zebra that she killed with the help of her dad.

Aryanna Gourdin and her father Eli took the trip from Utah to South Africa last week. Gourdin told ABC News she posted the photo on Facebook of her posing next to the dead zebra with a bow and arrow and the caption, "One of my dream hunts for sure," to share the experience.

"It's something I cherish and enjoy and I want other people to see what I experienced," she said in an interview with "Good Morning America."

The trip was one of many the pair have taken over the past five years, but her Facebook postings quickly made her a topic of heated discussion. One photo received over 73,000 comments, with some users are calling her "sick" and an "animal hater." Supporters posted encouraging messages, including "Let the haters hate! Hunt away Aryanna."

I would be happy to see trophy hunting banned; but death threats against a 12 year old...?

University of Texas students plan to carry sex toys to class to protest new campus-carry laws

University of Texas students plan to carry sex toys to class to protest new campus-carry laws

Pro-gun students believe the University of Texas-Austin is violating their rights by letting professors keep guns out of their offices.

They are pursuing relief with the Texas attorney general, who has previously said schools can’t ban guns in dorms under the state’s new campus-carry law.

Anti-gun students believe their personal safety is at risk if campus carry is enforced.

They are pursuing relief with sex toys.

I have to applaud the students for actually doing something more than wringing their hands and posting internet screeds about getting the vapors at the sight of a gun.

It will take actual work to

Virginia Thrasher wins first gold medal of Rio Olympics

Virginia Thrasher wins first gold medal of Rio Olympics for USA in 10m air rifle

The American teenager Virginia Thrasher won the first gold medal of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, holding her nerve to clinch the women’s 10m air rifle event.

Thrasher edged out China’s Du Li with an Olympic-record score of 208. The result is quite a surprise. Thrasher is ranked 23 in the world and Du had been dominant in qualify.

Thrasher shot 10.5 on her first shot of the final elimination round and smiled after 10.4 on her second shot put her comfortably ahead of China’s Du. Thrasher had a cumulative score of 208.0 to beat Du, a two-time gold medallist, by a point. The bronze medal was claimed by the 2012 Olympic champion, Yi Siling of China.

Thrasher became the first freshman to win both individual NCAA rifle titles and helped West Virginia win the team title. She followed that by winning the US Olympic trials less than a month later, earning a trip to Rio.
