for the most part so we could have a society with all its differences that could develop and coexist in civility; one that could work out its problems without decending to the worst impulses in human nature. Civility died with the rise of Trumpism. Our innate worst impulses are on the rise again.
In the oldest game of human survival the one with the biggest stick and largest number of participanrs with big sticks wins. The intelligent and thinking/empathetic only conquer the big sticks with overwhelming numbers incurring many losses or by taking up their own big sticks.
We can't just give up and shy away to defeat an uncivilized horde; they will win. We had better get tough, unify into large numbers and be powerfully and intelligently vocal and be prepared for the possibility of defending freedom with our own "big sticks" as a last resort. Otherwise, as history teaches, we will lose.

It's good to have an occasional crosscheck on ones perspective. Yes it's easy to get carried off with media hype but I try to stay on track as much as possible.
I've been around the block a few times, lived in 10 states and 5 countries and worked in many more. My concern, even call it downheartedness, is based mostly on my own opinion and what I've personally experienced. My conclusion of the state of our society even our civilization is not good. I could insert a thesis here but I won't bore you with it. Stats of past trends stemming long periods are interesting but not that useful since the methods and sources have evolved so rapidly. I don’t put too much faith in them but I don't dismiss them either. Media and other technological sources that bombard us are only as good as we are able to filter it for ourselves and we had better do so.
The attitude of the father in this story is not out of the ordinary now, but I will challenge the idea that attitudes in our society haven't changed much. On the contrary they are changing at such a rate that there is no precident to use as a stabilizer. Population increase exaserbates the increase of tention and lack of resources at a time when we need healthcare and empathy more than ever. Instead we have greedy politicians and "stand your ground" laws that promote narcissistic vigilante rule.
I have empathy for a person who was beaten down at a time when he was showing care for a lost child. I have pity for the angry, fearful man whose mind is so cluttered with deceit that he thinks it's his right to go beyond his child's welfare and unlawfully ruin another inocent person's life with blood, lies and denial... quote "I wanted to kill him". I have pity but can only hope he meets a lawful and reasonable punishment for the sake of societal boundaries.
Last week, my wife and 13 year old son were walking on a hiking path when a man running by yelled at them for being in his way threatened them and called her a bitch. Another day a person who didn't like the way an elderly woman was driving went to her car at a stoplight, reached in hitting her, took her car keys out of the ignition and after she appologized for anything she may have done he threw her keys down the sewer drain. I can continue but.....welcome to the 21st century.
I reserve the most pity for the child of this abusive man and the coming generation of children who will be raised in a Trumpian society.
I know this to be a true representation of how
dominionist extreamists throuout America have set a long term attack plan against humanist culture. I know from personal experience with these fanatics over the last 40 years.
Never underestimate the fragility of our rights and freedoms. Never underestimate the patience and perseverance of brainwashed generations devoted to a mythical cause they don't believe they need to prove either to themselves or anyone else. They are brainwashed to accept a predetermined absolute and relax into a blind faith that requires their mental energy to be devoted to the singular cause of their myth, not to validate it nor to question the means by which they achieve it. The ends always justify their means.

Your argument is honorable. I personally don't think exclusion of research or delaying advancement in human knowledge until poverty is conquered will improve the plight of humankind. I think it would have the opposite effect. If the priority is ending poverty, the path to that end is much more complicated than money. We have to change base human instincts bred into us from millions of years of tribe survival thinking. We have to remove war/greed thinking from science, replace survival thinking based on the individual with survival of the human race and the planet. We have to change the politics of money and greed with the politics of humanity.
And how is that accomplished? Education, instill wonder, exercise life and the expansion of human possibities, dwell on going beyond the worst of our nature and embrace the future. If we don't change our thinking, our politics, our relationship to the planet we will never end poverty.
Money fixes nothing, it exaserbates the problem. But if that is the only physical means available, we have to use it to break the 'cause' of poverty or poverty itself remains self perpetuating.
If I were to choose the top priority it would be education in its broadest sense.

It's too obvious looking back that every time the GOP are in the drivers seat America goes ass backward.
