House GOP's aid bills for Israel, Ukraine, Taiwan advance -- with Democrats' help

Source: cbs

Updated on: April 19, 2024 / 1:12 AM EDT / CBS News

Democrats took an unusual step Thursday and helped Republican leaders advance legislation to provide billions in stalled security funding for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, steering the measures closer toward passage this weekend.

After about nine hours of recess, the House Rules Committee reconvened late Thursday night and moved GOP House Speaker Mike Johnson's foreign aid bills on a 9-3 vote, thanks to the votes of all four Democrats who sit on the committee: Ranking Member Jim McGovern of Massachusetts, Pennsylvania Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon, Colorado Rep. Joe Neguse and New Mexico Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández.

The conservative Republican hardliners on the committee — Reps. Tom Massie of Kentucky, Ralph Norman of South Carolina and Chip Roy of Texas — all voted against the rule, because border security was not being paired with foreign aid. However, the speaker is putting what he said is an "aggressive" border bill to a vote Friday morning. It failed to pass out of the Rules Committee, but the House will consider it under a suspension of the rule, which means it will require two-thirds support to pass.

The House is expected to vote on final passage of the foreign aid package this weekend.

The three foreign aid bills would provide $26.4 billion to support Israel, $60.8 billion to bolster Ukraine and $8.1 billion to counter China in the Indo-Pacific, including billions for Taiwan. The Israel bill also includes more than $9.1 billion to address humanitarian needs, which Democrats said was necessary for their support.

'It's in print so believe it!' Internet roasts Trump after rambling paper-clutching rant

Source: raw story

Kathleen Culliton April 18, 2024 5:48PM ET

Former President Donald Trump's rambling speech about papers he claimed proved the hush money indictment against him was "ridiculous" was judged by those who viewed video to be ridiculous.

This assessment arrived moments after Trump shuffled out of Manhattan criminal court Thursday with a pile of printouts he said detailed supportive opinions from legal experts following his case.

"These are all stories from legal experts saying how this is not a case," Trump said. "The case is ridiculous."

"He literally just printed out his social media feed," replied @stelenj. "And he named like 3 people. Wow, 3 people who support you are saying you're innocent. Well, let's just throw the whole thing out then since Turley says so."

"Is he tired?" political commentator Molly Jong Fast wanted to know. "Is he sleepy?" .................................

Judge Cannon asked to include Hunter's laptop 'scandal' in official court record

Source: raw story

David Edwards April 18, 2024 3:40PM ET

Jose A. Perez, a grassroots supporter of Donald Trump, has requested permission to file an amicus brief in the ongoing classified documents case against the former president, according to court filings on Thursday.

In legal filings, Perez told U.S. District Court Judge Aileen Cannon that the prosecution of Trump interfered with his constitutional rights to vote and to election integrity. He claimed that the Department of Justice had been weaponized against Trump and his supporters.

The brief alleged that the Biden administration coerced intelligence agencies to influence the 2020 election, specifically accusing former CIA Director Mike Morrell of being pressured to support claims that damaging information from Hunter Biden's laptop was Russian disinformation.....................

He suggested postponing the case until after the November 2024 Presidential elections to eliminate alleged conflicts of interest.

The court has yet to decide on Perez's request to be considered a friend of the court and to have his brief accepted into the record of the case.

GOP rep: Greene 'theater' has to 'come to an end'

Source: The hill

by Sarah Fortinsky - 04/18/24 8:26 AM ET

Rep. Marc Molinaro (R-N.Y.) said Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s (R-Ga.) political “theater” must “come to an end,” likely referring to his colleague’s looming threat to oust Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Ga.).

“Her theater and this constant effort to hold the Congress hostage has to come to an end,” Molinaro said in an interview on CNN’s “The Source” on Wednesday. “I’m going to have no part in it.”

“And a good number of my colleagues — conservative and moderate — believe that enough is enough,” he added. “It is time to move on and to move past this kind of nonsense.”

Greene filed a motion to vacate Johnson from his leadership role late last month. Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) — a libertarian with an independent streak — is the only other Republican to publicly support the effort, saying Tuesday that he would co-sponsor Greene’s resolution.

Judge rejects Trump effort to pause Jan. 6 civil lawsuits while criminal case is ongoing

Source: abc news

The suits seek to hold Trump accountable for his actions leading up to Jan. 6.

Alexander Mallin April 18, 2024, 3:27 PM

.................

Trump had asked D.C. District Judge Amit Mehta to stay proceedings in the lawsuits -- brought by several members of Congress and police officers who protected the Capitol on Jan. 6 -- while his federal criminal case brought by Special Counsel Jack Smith was ongoing.

Trump's attorneys reasoned that defending himself from the lawsuits could improperly impact his defense strategy in his criminal case, which Mehta rejected in his ruling Thursday afternoon.

Mehta wrote that while, "it is true in a sense—both cases center on the former President’s actions in the lead up to and on January 6, 2021... [Trump ] overstates the significance of that factual overlap in the present posture of these matters."

Trump's team also cited the Supreme Court's upcoming arguments regarding the former president's claims of immunity from prosecution in his criminal case, which they argue could impact how Mehta ultimately rules on Trump's immunity claims for what he believes are "official acts" outlined in the civil lawsuits.

"...There is no reason to wait on the Supreme Court’s decision," Mehta responded. "This court is unlikely to make an immunity determination before the end of the Supreme Court’s term. Thus, if the Court’s ruling on criminal immunity is relevant to the outcome here, it can easily be applied."

Vance is one of my most trusted guests on msnbc.

BREAKING: Former U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance sounds the alarm about Donald Trump's hush money trial, says that you only see this kind of jury fear in cases "involving violent organized crime."

And it gets so much worse...

"I can't help but contemplate that jurors are concerned about being publicly identified in a case involving a former president," tweeted Vance. "Typically, you would only see that happen in a case involving violent organized crime."

Vance made the observation on Twitter (X) in response to a report that one of the jurors was excused from the trial because she was afraid of backlash if her identity reached the public. Family and friends had asked her if she was a juror based on already-revealed information.

Vance voiced similar concerns during an appearance on MSNBC.

"What's so unusual here is this concern from the other juror who walked in after being selected and said, I don't think I can be impartial because of all of the outside influences that are being exerted against me already, even this early in the process," said Vance.

Donald Trump is doing everything he can to corrupt our judicial system. He wants the jurors terrified of him and his violent MAGA supporters because he knows that he can't win this case through legal means.

The jurors must be protected at all costs..........

Former Wisconsin Democratic Rep. Peter Barca announces new bid for Congress

A Democrat who served one term representing southeast Wisconsin in Congress in the 1990s before going on to become a leader in the Assembly and state revenue secretary announced Thursday that he’s running for Congress again

SCOTT BAUER Associated Press April 18, 2024, 8:03 AM

MADISON, Wis. -- A Democrat who represented southeast Wisconsin in Congress in the 1990s before going on to become a leader in the Assembly and state revenue secretary announced Thursday that he's running for Congress again.

Peter Barca announced his bid against Republican U.S. Rep. Bryan Steil, who is seeking a fourth term. Wisconsin's 1st Congressional District, previously represented by former House Speaker Paul Ryan, leans Republican but was made more competitive under new boundary lines adopted in 2022.

The seat is a target for Democrats nationally as they attempt to regain majority control of the House. It is one of only two congressional districts in Wisconsin that are viewed as competitive. The other is western Wisconsin's 3rd Congressional District held by Republican U.S. Rep. Derrick Van Orden.

Republicans hold six of Wisconsin's eight congressional seats.

Kansas GOP rep says he won't run for reelection

Source: The hill

by Nick Robertson - 04/18/24 2:02 PM ET

Rep. Jake LaTurner (R-Kan.) announced Thursday he will not run for reelection in November, adding himself to a growing list of members leaving Congress at the end of the term.

LaTurner, 36, said he is leaving the House to better focus on his family and young children. He said he will remain in office until the end of his term in January.

..................

Multiple members have also chosen to resign from office early, thinning an already slim GOP majority in the House. With the resignation of Rep. Ken Buck (R-Colo.) earlier this month and the expected resignation of Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-Wis.) Friday, the GOP has a one-vote margin in the House.

Gallagher, however, may choose to stay in the House for longer than previously announced to support a foreign aid package introduced this week, per a source familiar with the congressman.

LaTurner said the “current dysfunction” has been “distressing,” but it is not the reason he is leaving Congress. ..........................................
