Twitter Erupts At Mitch McConnell After He Complains About Democratic Obstruction

By Colin Taylor
Posted on January 4, 2017

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) proved for the umpteenth time today that he is an ideologically vacant hypocrite with absolutely no sense of shame or irony when he decided to chastise Senate Democrats for vowing to fight against Donald Trump’s Supreme Court picks.

The hypocrisy is just staggering. McConnell and his cronies have refused to even meet with President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee, Merrick Garland, on the basis of who nominated him. The Republicans have left the highest court in the land deadlocked with an even number of judges for the greater part of a year and they now have the sheer nerve to complain about Democrats moving to block Trump’s nomination, which he shouldn’t get to make in the first place because the Republican Party spat in the face of their constitutional duty to vote on nominees.

McConnel’s entire argument for the unprecedented refusal to even meet with nominee Merrick Garland is based on the false notion that President Obama is a “lame duck” (which he isn’t) and that the “American people” should have a say in the appointment by allowing the next president to fill the vacancy – even though according to multiple polls, a significant majority of the American people wanted him to do his damn job and fill the seat last year. McConnell even admitted that if Clinton had won the election, he still wouldn’t have voted to confirm ANY Democratic nominee.

So it is rightfully so that the Twittersphere erupted in fury at McConnell’s outrageous hypocrisy.

President-elect Donald Trump is seemingly taking the word of Julian Assange over that of the U.S. intelligence community, writing on Twitter that the WikiLeaks founder “said it was not the Russians who gave” him the leaked emails from the Democratic National Committee and other prominent political officials.

“Julian Assange said ‘a 14 year old could have hacked Podesta’ - why was DNC so careless? Also said Russians did not give him the info!” Trump wrote on Twitter Wednesday morning. That post replaced an earlier one with similar language in which Assange’s name was misspelled.

Minutes later, Trump cited a Twitter post from Fox News in which Assange is quoted as labeling American media coverage as "very dishonest." The president-elect added his own commentary, writing that media coverage in the U.S. is "more dishonest than anyone knows."

He followed that tweet with another series that renewed criticism of both the DNC and the media.

“Somebody hacked the DNC but why did they not have 'hacking defense' like the RNC has and why have they not responded to the terrible things they did and said (like giving the questions to the debate to H),” he tweeted. “A total double standard! Media, as usual, gave them a pass.”................................

Jesse Jackson: Civil rights at risk under Sessions

U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., President-elect Donald Trump's pick for attorney general, cheers on the crowd during a Trump rally in Mobile, Alabama, in December. | Brynn Anderson/AP

Confirmation hearings for Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions, named by Donald Trump to be attorney general of the United States, will begin on Jan. 10, before Trump is even inaugurated. The rush and insistence on only two days of hearings reflect Republican efforts to cram the nomination through before Americans understand what is at stake.

Sessions will, no doubt, present himself as a humble, genial and reasonable public servant. In reality, Sessions is an outlier, an unimaginable nominee as attorney general, an implacable opponent of the very rights and liberties that the attorney general is supposed to defend. As more than 200 civil rights, human rights and women’s groups noted in a unified statement: “Sen. Sessions has a 30-year record of racial insensitivity, bias against immigrants, disregard for the rule of law and hostility to the protection of civil rights that makes him unfit to serve as the attorney general of the United States.”

Three decades ago, a Republican-led Senate Judiciary Committee rejected Ronald Reagan’s nomination of Sessions to a federal judgeship. It deemed him unfit for the bench due to his repeated racially biased remarks, his intemperate dismissal of the ACLU and the NAACP as “un-American,” and his open opposition to the Voting Rights Act, which he scorned as “intrusive.” Republicans agreed that no person with such extreme views should adjudicate the laws that he clearly disdained. That was then. Now Donald Trump and Sen. Charles “Chuck” Grassley, R-Iowa, are intent on putting Sessions in charge of enforcing those very laws.

The attorney general of the United States is a powerful position. The person who holds this office has immense discretion in how the law is enforced — which cases the office chooses to prosecute and which it does not. The attorney general heads several agencies, including the FBI, the Drug Enforcement Administration and the immigration courts. Given his views and that power, there is no question that Sessions would put fundamental rights at risk as attorney general...........................

Senate push for new Russia hacking probe fizzles

Source: Politico

01/03/17 01:38 PM EST

John McCain and Lindsey Graham are backing off of their push for a select committee on cybersecurity after Russian interference in the election, bowing to the political reality that the Senate Republican Conference largely does not back their idea.

The Arizona and South Carolina Republican senators, along with Democratic Sens. Chuck Schumer of New York and Jack Reed of Rhode Island, have been pushing the Senate for weeks to create a new panel to investigate broader cyber threats as well as Russian activity in the 2016 presidential race. They favor creating a new panel over the current piecemeal investigatory structure. McCain's Armed Services Committee as well as the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and Senate Intelligence Committee are all pursuing probes into the Russian hacking.

........................

McCain said he'd spoken to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) about the matter. McConnell prefers to use the Intelligence Committee to spearhead the cyber investigation, and McCain said their discussions had done little to move the GOP leader.

"He said he doesn't think we need it," McCain said...........................

Democrats are getting ready for the fight with anti-Trump war rooms

Tuesday Jan 03, 2017 · 11:23 AM CST

The DNC's new communications and research operation, to be staffed by former aides to Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign, will be one of several efforts from across the Democratic firmament to take on Trump, including the office of Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.), the Center for American Progress and American Bridge. [...]

Key priorities for the new DNC war room........................

Thanks to Calls from Angry Constituents, Republicans Have Withdrawn Measure to Gut Ethics Committee

January 3, 2017

In a clear sign that when the people speak, the politicians must listen, Republicans have backed down on their plan to gut the independent ethics committee thanks to strong opposition and calls from constituents across the nation.

The news about the Republican plan to gut the committee broke last night, and within hours, phone calls began to barrage offices of Republican congressmen across the nation.

Lawmakers marveled at the number of calls pouring into their office as angry constituents expressed their outrage at the Republicans’ rushed choice to gut the independent committee.

........................

Thanks to strong push-back from regular citizens making phone calls, this measure has been ended. Just hours before the newest members of the House could be confirmed, Republicans called an emergency session where House leaders brought about the end of this dangerous measure.

Now, though the unprecedented attack on Democracy will no doubt continue under Republican rule, we can feel emboldened to act and speak out against corruption, no matter how small our voices may seem.

Human decency and freedom may have lost the battle, but we will win the war.
