Donald Trump backs out of speaking at black church in Detroit

Donald Trump’s maladroit outreach to African-American voters has hit another stumble, with the Detroit Free Press reporting that the Republican presidential nominee will not speak to the black congregation at Great Faith Ministries International in Detroit this weekend, instead opting to attend the service and hold a one-on-one interview with the congregation’s leader, Bishop Wayne T. Jackson.

The service will not be open to the public or to reporters.

“He’ll be here Saturday,” Jackson said. “He’s going to sit in service and have the experience in the black church, and then he and I will be in this office and do an interview for the Impact Network that will be aired later on. Just like any visitor, there will be fellowship at the service, and he can talk to people one-on-one.”

Jackson told the Detroit Free Press that he is not disappointed that the visit, originally billed as a speech to the church’s members, will not feature an address from the presidential candidate......................

Hillary Clinton, Swiping at Donald Trump, Argues U.S. Is Vital World Leader

CINCINNATI — Hillary Clinton offered a vigorous case on Wednesday for America’s place as a singular and vital leader in the world, drawing a sharp contrast with the “America first” approach espoused by Donald J. Trump.

“If there’s one core belief that has guided and inspired me every step of the way, it is this: The United States is an exceptional nation,” Mrs. Clinton, the Democratic presidential nominee, said in an address to the American Legion’s national convention.

In her address, Mrs. Clinton championed the notion of American exceptionalism, a term that has traditionally been embraced by Republicans.

While the campaign of Mr. Trump, the Republican nominee, has been marked by a hard-line nationalist approach, Mrs. Clinton sketched out a view of America as a model for other nations and a force for good in the world, while saying that such a role comes with “serious responsibility.”..............................

Clinton delivers solid, detailed speech on military policy that stands in stark contrast to Trump

The Washington Post headline may have read “Clinton plans to slam Trump as a dangerous isolationist in American Legion speech,” but anyone who tuned in expecting Hillary to deliver a speech laden with barbs and one-liners was disappointed. Seriously disappointed, because this was a serious speech in which Clinton only occasionally drew a contrast between her positions and those of her opponent.

In a campaign marked with extraordinary nonsense and antics from the Republican Party, Clinton’s speech may not generate headlines. It provided no eye-popping reversals of policy stretching back decades. It threatened no allies, and was singularly lacking in heavily partisan content. It was completely free from the strutting, screaming, and self-congratulation that marks a Donald Trump tirade.

.....................

Instead, it was a call to treat the military, and particularly veterans, in a nonpartisan manner and an attempt to assert American exceptionalism as not just a call to lead, but a call to lead “humbly.”

Most of the references to Trump in the speech were not direct, but implicit. ....................

You don't build a coalition by insulting our friends or acting like a loose cannon. You do it by putting in the slow, hard work of building relationships, getting countries, working together was my job every day as your secretary of state. It's more than a photo op, it takes consistency and reliability. Actually, it's just like building personal relationships. People have to get to know that they can count on you that you won't say one thing one day and something totally different the next. And it certainly takes more than trying to make up for a year of insults and insinuations by dropping in on our neighbors for a few hours. And then flying home again. That is not how it works.

The complete speech can be watched here.

Clinton's midday address at the American Legion's annual convention in Cincinnati Wednesday comes as Trump ponders a last-minute trip to Mexico in advance of a long-awaited speech on immigration.

A Clinton campaign official said the Democratic nominee plans to use her first public event in days to portray her Republican opponent as a questionable leader who would "walk away from our allies, undermine our values, insult our military - and has explicitly rejected the idea of American exceptionalism."

In contrast, the official said Clinton "will make the case for American exceptionalism and call for maintaining America's military and diplomatic leadership in the world."

To bolster her argument, Clinton will talk about her experience, including serving on the Senate Armed Services Committee and as secretary of state. She will also emphasize the growing list of Republicans who have backed her campaign.

A campaign official said that in advance of her Wednesday speech, another leading Republican would back the campaign. James Clad, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense under President George W. Bush, will announce his support for Clinton, following a slew of GOP endorsements.............................

What is Mexico's president thinking?

Peña Nieto is taking 'an enormous political risk' meeting with Trump, Mexico's former president says.

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto’s standing in the polls has sunk to record lows, and a new plagiarism scandal isn’t helping. So maybe meeting with a guy even less popular than he is could bring the Mexican public back to his side?

That’s one theory being considered Wednesday as Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump — a man who once called America’s third-largest trading partner an “enemy” — prepares to visit Mexico City later in the day. Trump's approval rating in Mexico, according to a June poll, was 2 percent. Peña Nieto is hovering around 23 percent, other surveys show.

.......................

Former Mexican President Vicente Fox told CNN’s “New Day” early Wednesday that Peña Nieto "is taking an enormous political risk" by hosting Trump. If Peña Nieto is seen as "going soft" on the businessman, Fox warned, "it will hurt him greatly."

A first-of-its-kind media campaign launches in Arizona on Wednesday in hopes of boosting Hispanic voter registration to historic highs.

A new public service announcement co-produced by the state's largest Spanish-language television and radio stations is set to air roughly 2,500 times through Election Day on Univision and Telemundo television stations and will feature DJs and talk show hosts from some of the state's most popular Spanish-language radio stations, according to organizers.

The campaign is the brainchild of Mi Familia Vota, a nonpartisan voter registration group that is seeking to register roughly 95,000 new Latino voters in six states this year. While volunteers are rounding up new registrants in California, Colorado, Florida, Nevada and Texas, Arizona is seen as the crown jewel of the effort this year. That's because no other state has been on the front lines of the years-long immigration policy fights and Hispanic leaders are eager to demonstrate their community's growing political clout in the state.

Recent polls show Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton neck-and-neck with Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.
But there are two other races of note in the state: The reelections of Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio -- a world-renowned champion of strict immigration enforcement who is widely loathed across Hispanic America for his support of strict border controls and use of racial profiling to round up undocumented immigrants. The Justice Department may soon decide whether to charge him with federal contempt-of-court charges for defying orders to stop using his racial profiling tactics..............................

Several years ago, about 250 people bought Tijuana oceanfront condos sold under Donald Trump’s name. They were never built. Disgruntled buyers say they were deceived by the presumptive Republican presidential nominee and fear voters will experience the same disillusionment.

On her 65th birthday last year, Sylvia Villavicencio — once a Donald Trump devotee — pummeled a Mexican piñata of the presumptive Republican presidential nominee. Her guests poked out the eyes and tore off the legs.

“We wanted to express our feelings and vent our anger,” said her husband, Mike Rodriguez, a retired real estate builder. They live in Madera, in California's Central Valley.

The couple are unlike most buyers of Trump piñatas, which have found a market on both sides of the border since Trump's political rise. They dislike him not because of his hard-line immigration policy proposals or his remarks about minorities, although those have added fuel. The root of their anger is a sense of profound, personal betrayal. They believe millions of Americans will soon experience it, too.

In 2007, Villavicencio and Rodriguez considered themselves among Trump’s biggest fans. When they heard he was building an oceanfront resort on a cliff in Tijuana, where both had family, they rushed to purchase two condominiums. About 250 other people, mostly from Southern California, also bought units.

Trump was one of the world’s most famous magnates. They were sure the project would prove a solid investment. A brochure for the Trump Ocean Resort Baja Mexico described Trump as “the very definition of the American success story.” Rodriguez and Villavicencio ascribed to this notion. “I gave him all of my trust,” Rodriguez said. “When I heard it was him, I dropped all of my defenses.”
