(CNN) —Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign on Saturday stood by a book endorsement the Vermont senator wrote that suggested President Barack Obama had let progressives down, claiming that what the senator wrote is "absolutely true."
Sanders penned the book endorsement for "Buyer's Remorse: How Obama let Progressives Down" by Bill Press. "Bill Press makes the case ... Read this book," Sanders writes in a blurb featured atop the book's front cover.
"Bill Press makes the case why, long after taking the oath of office, the next president of the United States must keep rallying the people who elected him or her on behalf of progressive causes. That is the only way real change will happen," read Sanders' full quote.
Press' book, which is out a day after the Iowa caucuses on February 2, is about "the many ways President Obama has failed to live up to either his promises or his progressive potential," according to promotional materials..................

Mary Jo Peterson isn’t worried. “I think Hillary is going to be the best president we’ve ever had,” she says, calmly surveilling a crowd of about 1,500 in Davenport for Bill and Hillary Clinton Friday night.

In recent weeks, Clinton has battled a flurry of headlines declaring her “panicked” at rival Bernie Sander’s surge in polls and fundraising. Clinton is “racing to close the enthusiasm gap,” while her polls numbers are in “an absolute free fall,” and “Sanders’ surge threatens a replay of 2008 for Clinton.” But the reality on the ground doesn’t bear this out.
The Davenport rally, essentially Clinton’s closing argument to Iowa’s eastern Quad Cities, was one of the largest crowds Clinton has addressed by design. As Clinton makes her way across the Hawkeye State ahead of Monday’s caucuses, her events—as well as her husband’s—are by design smaller and more intimate. There are no desperate recriminations, just a calm outline of the differences between Clinton and her rival Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders. She is so on message that her events hardly vary in structure and tone. Her husband’s events are so quiet—a retelling of how he met his wife and how she has over the years been a force of good in his life and, he argues, the world—that the New York Times declared “the magic seems to be missing” and quoted political observers worried about his health.
What’s missing, actually, is the panic. .......................
.....................This time around, Clinton has done the opposite.And her crowds went from massive to relatively tiny—maybe 150-200 people in most places. She wanted to give Iowans an intimate feeling, says one campaign staffer. She wanted them to see that she’s listening to them, and not vice versa, a fact that is clearly reflected in her final Iowa campaign ad, which offers an emotional thank you to the people of Iowa.
Obama basically caught Clinton by surprise in 2008, but this year Clinton has been aware of Sanders’ threat for months. He was gaining on her in the spring before her Benghazi hearing and debate performances helped her keep the lead. That has allowed the campaign to deploy a far more measured response. In responding to Sanders, Clinton has tried to delineate differences without becoming too negative or personal.
But perhaps the biggest difference is her message. ..................................This time, the campaign is highlighting the historic nature of her candidacy and nakedly appealing to women. But even beyond that, Clinton’s own wonky dissections of Sanders’ policies are purely hers. She’s not trying on any outfits—military Hillary, mommy Hillary—she’s just Hillary.

Des Moines, Iowa (CNN)Hillary Clinton urged voters Saturday to make gun control a key issue in the Iowa caucuses, pledging to take on the issue at an event where former Rep. Gabby Giffords endorsed the former secretary of state.
Giffords, the Arizona Democrat who was shot in the head during an appearance in front of a Tucson supermarket in 2011, called Clinton a "tough" and "courageous" candidate and pledged her support because Clinton "will stand up to the gun lobby."
"Speaking is hard for me," Giffords said, a nod to the fact that she is still recovering from the near-fatal shooting. "But in January 2017, I want to see these words, 'Madame President.'"

Senator Bernie Sanders agreed Thursday to cosponsor a bill repealing a 2005 law that shields gun businesses from civil liability, but the presidential candidate continues to offer dubious explanations for his past support for the measure.
Sanders’s about-face on the issue won’t help the bill — which is already sponsored by Connecticut Democratic Senators Chris Murphy and Richard Blumenthal — overcome Republican opposition in this Congress. What it might do, he hopes, is diffuse months of rival Hillary Clinton’s attacks on his gun record. The former Secretary of State has used Sanders’s past support for giving gun businesses immunity to raise doubts about his liberal bona fides among Democratic primary voters who are largely aligned in support of stronger gun laws: A New York Times-CBS poll this month found that 82 percent of Democrats support stronger gun restrictions, up from 70 percent of Democrats who said they backed stricter laws in December 2013.
Dan Gross, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, described Sanders’s move as “proof of what can happen when the public holds politicians accountable — which is happening on the gun violence prevention issue like never before.”
Sanders’s efforts to explain his past gun votes has led a candidate running as a bold truth teller into uncharacteristic evasions. He has struggled to articulate why he voted for the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA), enacted in 2005, which prevents lawsuits against gun manufacturers and sellers for crimes committed with firearms that they sold.
In a Democratic forum on Monday, a week before the Iowa caucuses, Sanders said he had supported PLCAA because, “among other things, it has a section which says we should not be selling ammunition which will pierce policemen’s armor.” He said he also liked a PLCAA provision “which said that we want to have safety locks for children on guns.”

Indeed, public pollsters who’ve conducted surveys in both Iowa and New Hampshire caution that the Sanders team might be misreading the data the campaign is relying on to make its case that Sanders would broaden the Democratic electorate and make more states competitive by luring young, more independently minded voters.
Patrick Murray, who runs the Monmouth University Polling Institute in New Jersey, said the independent voters who are backing Sanders in the primary are more liberal in orientation and would be likely to vote for the Democrat in November anyway.
“It’s a big leap of faith to take primary poll data and jump to the general,” added Lee Miringoff, the director of the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion, which has conducted recent polls for NBC News and The Wall Street Journal. “You do ask the questions, and it tells you something: Hillary has a problem with independents, and Bernie doesn’t. Fast forward to September, October and November. The campaigns will change, and that dynamic will be different.”
The increasing competitiveness of the presidential race has left many Democrats to consider how a Sanders nomination would affect their party’s chances at keeping the White House, and it’s become a frequent talking point on the campaign trail as Clinton and Sanders’ make their final pitches to voters in both early states.
The Clinton campaign insists the former secretary of state is the strongest potential candidate in the fall, and Clinton allies are warning that picking Sanders would jeopardize not only Democrats’ hold on the presidency, but also damage the party’s prospects to win back the Senate and make inroads on Republicans’ wide House majority.

The Washington Post editorial board published a scathing indictment of "Bernie Sanders's fiction-filled" presidential campaign Thursday morning. Here's the key paragraph:

Mr. Sanders tops off his narrative with a deus ex machina: He assures Democrats concerned about the political obstacles in the way of his agenda that he will lead a “political revolution” that will help him clear the capital of corruption and influence-peddling. This self-regarding analysis implies a national consensus favoring his agenda when there is none and ignores the many legitimate checks and balances in the political system that he cannot wish away
Oomph. The Democratic candidate responded Thursday in Iowa by asking: "Where was The Washington Post to express concern that the middle class was shrinking?"
Let's start with what exactly Sanders has said on the subject of his ability to get things done as president. Here's what he said at a CNN-sponsored town hall event in Iowa on Monday night:
If we are serious about rebuilding the American middle class, if we are serious about providing paid family and medical leave to all of our people, if we are serious about ending the disgrace of having so many of our children live in poverty, the real way to do it is to have millions of Americans finally stand up and say, "Enough is enough," for people to get engaged in the political process, to finally demand that Washington represent all of us, not just a handful of very wealthy people.
It's important to read between the lines of that response. Sanders is saying, in essence, that if he is elected, he will bring in lots and lots of liberal members of the House and Senate on his coattails — fundamentally altering the governing dynamic in this county for, at least, the past 15 years.
That the Republican majority in the House — the GOP's largest since World War II — and its five-seat Senate majority would simply be washed away by a Sanders tidal wave is, of course, possible. In the sense that it is possible that I, at age 39 and less than a year removed from ankle surgery, will dunk a basketball later today. But, possible is not probable — or even close.................
