Hillary Clinton makes campaign stop in Cleveland Sunday

Posted 12:03 pm, July 31, 2016, by Ann Domeck and Lorrie Taylor,

Updated at 06:40pm, July 31,

CLEVELAND - Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, along with her running mate Tim Kaine made a stop in Cleveland as part of their "Stronger Together" jobs-focused bus tour through Pennsylvania and Ohio.

Clinton spoke at Imani Temple Ministry in Cleveland.

Listen to her speech, above.

Clinton’s campaign originally told Fox 8 that the event was canceled due to time constraints. It appears that the campaign decided to hold an impromptu event anyway, after spending the night in Cleveland at the Kimpton Schofield Hotel.

Cherice Hollingsworth and her children were on their way to visit family when Hollingsworth spotted the campaign’s big blue buses. They pulled over to experience history in the making and a hand shake none of them will ever forget.............................

Hillary Clinton said Sunday that Donald Trump repaid the "ultimate sacrifice" of a U.S. Army captain killed in Iraq with insults and degrading comments about Muslims, as the soldier's bereaved father pressured Republican Party leaders to distance themselves from the GOP presidential nominee.

Clinton's comments came after Trump refused to back down from his criticism of the Gold Star parents' remarks.

........................

Trump's stand has once again left Republican leaders facing demands to denounce their party nominee and overshadowed Clinton's campaign message with controversy.

.....................

Likewise, Clinton told Republicans on Sunday: "This is a time to pick country over party."

In statements released Sunday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan condemned any criticism of Muslim Americans who serve their country and rejected the idea of a Muslim travel ban — an idea proposed by Trump earlier in the campaign. But neither statement mentioned Trump by name or repudiated him...................

..........................

On Saturday, during a visit to Johnstown Wire Technologies, Kaine recalled bygone days spent in his father's ironworking shop. Clinton told stories about helping her father screen-print draperies.

.....................................

Then, in a broader sense, both talked about manufacturing and job creation in Pennsylvania and throughout the country. “I know the deep importance of manufacturing, the deep importance of cooperation between management and union labor,” Kaine said. “That's why I'm so glad to come here today.”
.............................................

Clinton and Kaine stopped in Johnstown as part of a three-day bus tour through Pennsylvania and Ohio that started after the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. They spoke to an audience of about 200 people, including many local influential Democrats.

“I think it's very important for all presidential candidates, especially Hillary, to visit Johnstown to get a firsthand view of the issues that cities like Johnstown are having and the help we need to make the factories like this – the productivity – improve throughout these areas,” Johnstown Mayor Frank Janakovic said.......

Clinton Image Improves Following Conventions; Leads Trump by 5

http://www.publicpolicypolling.com/main/2016/07/clinton-image-improves-following-conventions-leads-trump-by-5.html

PPP's new national poll, taken completely after both party's conventions, finds that Hillary Clinton emerged with a much more positive image than she had a month ago. Donald Trump meanwhile is just as unpopular as he was before the conventions.

Clinton's net favorability improved by 9 points over the last month. She's still not popular, with a -6 net favorability at 45/51, but it's a good deal better than the -15 spread she had at 39/54 a month ago. The gains are particularly attributable to Democrats increasing in their enthusiasm for her, going from giving her a 76/15 rating to an 83/12 one. Trump, on the other hand, is at a -22 net favorability with 36% of voters seeing him favorably to 58% with a negative one. That's barely changed at all from the 35/58 standing we found for him in late June.

Clinton leads the race with 46% to 41% for Trump, with Gary Johnson at 6% and Jill Stein at 2%. In a head to head just between Clinton and Trump, Clinton hits 50% and leads Trump 50-45. A month ago Clinton led 45-41 in the full field contest and 48-44 in the head to head so there hasn't been much change. But not much change is good news for Clinton. We've been writing for months that this race is shaping up pretty similarly both nationally and at the state level to the margins Barack Obama won by in 2012- not a huge landslide by any means, but a solid victory. The conventions have passed without any change to that big picture, and that leaves Clinton as the favorite going into the final three months.

It's also important to note that most of the remaining undecided pool is very Democratic leaning. .................

Democrats are coming out of their convention with the public having a much better view of their party (45/48 favorability) than the Republicans (38/55 favorability).....................

Muslim Family of Fallen Army Captain Responds to Trump: 'Shame on Him'

WATCH Muslim Gold Star Father Says Trump 'Has No Decency'

The grieving Khan family reacted tonight to Donald Trump's latest comments, telling ABC News in an emotional interview that "running for president is not an entitlement to disrespect Gold Star families and [a] Gold Star mother."

In his first response to a searing charge from bereaved Army father Khizr Khan at the Democratic National Convention that he'd "sacrificed nothing" for his country, Trump told ABC News' George Stephanopoulos that he had in fact sacrificed by employing "thousands and thousands of people." He also suggested that Khan's wife Ghazala didn’t speak at the DNC because she was forbidden to as a Muslim and questioned whether Khan’s words were his own.

"Sacrifice -- I don't think he knows the meaning of sacrifice, the meaning of the word," Ghazala Khan, mother of slain Army Captain Humayun Kahn said. "Because when I was standing there, all America felt my pain. Without saying a single word. Everybody felt that pain."

While Ghazala Khan grew visibly upset, her husband, Khizr Khan was livid, urging Trump’s children to "tell him to learn to behave, learn to be decent." .....................

WATCH Trump to Gold Star Father: 'I've Made a Lot of Sacrifices'

Hillary Clinton on Saturday called on Americans to "stand with" the parents of a fallen Muslim U.S. soldier following Donald Trump's rebuke of the couple.

"I was very moved to see Ghazala Khan stand bravely and with dignity in support of her son on Thursday night. And I was very moved to hear her speak last night, bravely and with dignity, about her son's life and the ultimate sacrifice he made for his country," the Democratic nominee said in a statement, referring to the mother of Army Capt. Humayun S.M. Khan, who was killed in Iraq in 2004.

His father, Khazir Khan, offered a scathing critique of Trump during remarks at the Democratic National Convention last week, saying the Republican nominee has "sacrificed nothing" for his country. His wife, Ghazala Khan, stood by his side.

.................Clinton on Saturday stood by the Khans, also saying in the statement: "This is a time for all Americans to stand with the Khans, and with all the families whose children have died in service to our country. And this is a time to honor the sacrifice of Captain Khan and all the fallen. Captain Khan and his family represent the best of America, and we salute them." .......................

DNC-balloon-drop

Balloons dropped on the convention floor as the event came to a close.

An Iowa native — a Republican — was among the speakers last night at the Democratic National Convention. Doug Elmets once worked as an intern for Senator Chuck Grassley and he worked in the Reagan White House as a speechwriter.
..................

Elmets, who grew up in Des Moines, said he’ll vote for Hillary Clinton because he shudders to think what Trump would do as president.

.............................

Elmets told the crowd of Democrats the Republican Party’s 2016 platform was laced with “alarming…anti-immigrant, anti-gay and anti-women positions that do not represent the views of most Americans.”

He offered this analysis of the GOP’s presidential nominee:”Trump is a petulant, dangerously unbalanced reality star who will coddle tyrants and alienate allies.”
