(CNN)Florida's county-by-county plan to vaccinate its elderly population has created a mass scramble for a limited number of doses, leading to hourslong lines at vaccination sites and overwhelmed county hotlines and websites.
In southwest Florida, the Lee County Department of Health encouraged anyone 65 and older and high-risk frontline health care workers to come to one of seven vaccination sites. Each site had just 300 vaccine doses, and "no appointment is necessary," the county said.
The first-come, first-serve plan led to huge lines forming overnight Tuesday as people camped out on lawn chairs and waited for hours.

Bruce Scott told CNN he arrived at a Ft. Myers vaccination site at 1:30 a.m. and waited in a line for about 8 or 9 hours to get vaccinated.
"Although I'm grateful to get the vaccine, I feel that there's got to be a better way to distribute this," he said afterward. "For people that really need it, elderly that might be disabled in some way, they can't endure this process, so there's got to be a better way to manage this."..........

To set the tone for his inauguration the next day, President-elect Biden will lead a memorial to remember and honor lives lost to COVID-19, with church-bell ringings and light shows across the country on Tue., Jan. 19, at 5:30 p.m. ET.
Driving the news: The Presidential Inauguration Committee is announcing Thursday morning that a D.C. ceremony, led by Biden, will feature lights around the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool — the first time lighting around the Reflecting Pool has memorialized American lives lost.
"PIC is inviting cities and towns around the country to join Washington, D.C., in illuminating buildings and ringing church bells at 5:30 p.m. ET [15 minutes after sunset] in a national moment of unity and remembrance," the committee says.
PIC communications director Pili Tobar said in a statement: "The inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris represents the beginning of a new national journey."
"However, in the midst of a pandemic — when so many Americans are grieving the loss of family, friends, and neighbors — it is important that we honor those who have died, reflect on what has been one of the more challenging periods in the nation’s history, and renew our commitment to coming together to end the pandemic and rebuild our nation."...........................

Don't be too nervous about Republican Sen. Josh Hawley's announcement that he will object to the certification of Joe Biden as President when Congress meets on Jan. 6. His ploy won't stop Biden from taking the oath of office on Jan. 20. But it should make everyone concerned about the long-term health of our democracy.
According to federal law, if at least one senator and one House member submit written objections to a state's Electoral College votes, the House and the Senate must retire to their separate chambers for two hours of debate. Each chamber then votes on whether to count that state's votes. The 1887 law that dictates this process -- the Electoral Count Act -- is confusing and convoluted, but the bottom line is that Congress must count a state's Electoral College votes unless both the House and the Senate vote to reject them.
Hawley's objection -- which will join a planned objection from Alabama Representative Mo Brooks in the House -- has zero chance of succeeding. The Democrats who control the House surely will not go along, and it is likely that a number of Senate Republicans, such as Mitt Romney, will also reject this blatant attempt at overruling the will of the voters.
What is more concerning is that the delusional Republican gambit is happening at all. There has been zero evidence of meaningful voter fraud or a compromised presidential election. Elections officials from both parties have said that the 2020 election was one of the most secure ever. Senator Hawley opined on Twitter that that "millions of voters" are concerned about election integrity, but that's only because President Donald Trump and his followers keep making baseless assertions. Just saying there was voter fraud does not make it real.
In a statement posted on social media, Hawley claimed that states such as Pennsylvania "failed to follow their own state election laws." This is false: the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, which is the authority on Pennsylvania law, rejected numerous Republican-backed lawsuits both before and after the election. The US Supreme Court also refused to consider a challenge from Pennsylvania Republicans to block the certification of the results.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) fired back on Monday at colleagues who opposed increasing direct stimulus payments to Americans for coronavirus relief.
The House passed legislation Monday to increase stimulus checks to $2,000 for most Americans. Rep. Kevin Brady (R-Texas) said he opposed the increased amount because it would go toward people paying down credit card debt or making “new purchases online at Walmart, Best Buy or Amazon.”
Ocasio-Cortez, who has long advocated for higher direct payments, mocked the Republican’s take, pointing to Congress’ monthslong delay in providing desperately needed pandemic aid.............................

(CNN)Retired Army Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, a key witness in President Donald Trump's impeachment inquiry, said Monday evening he has no regrets about delivering the explosive testimony that garnered fierce backlash from Trump and ultimately informed his early exit from the military.
"So I think that, in the end, I have no regrets about how things turned out. Yes, I left the military unforeseen. I had every intention staying on -- going on to war college. But I think my role may have been, in certain ways, more important in that I was able to do my part -- defend this nation in a very meaningful manner and expose corruption by the chief executive," Vindman said during an interview on CNN's "Erin Burnett OutFront."
"I feel that in that regard that I have served my nation."
Vindman testified during public impeachment hearings that Trump's push for Ukraine to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden was "inappropriate" and that he knew "without hesitation" that he had to report it. He said that he reported his concerns out of a "sense of duty," and he defended his fellow witnesses from what he described as "reprehensible" attacks.
Testifying in his Army uniform as an active-duty soldier, Vindman invoked his father's decision to leave the Soviet Union and come to the US, noting that the testimony he was giving would likely get him killed in Russia. "Do not worry, I will be fine for telling the truth," Vindman said at the time in a now well-known line...............

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for the Pfizer vaccine(link is external) and the Moderna vaccine.(link is external) You can find the other COVID-19 vaccines that are in trial phases II or III(link is external) through this COVID-19 Vaccine Tracker.(link is external)
We know that everyone is excited to get the vaccine, but right now we don't have enough vaccine supply for everyone in Wisconsin. Until vaccine supply increases, we are following vaccine prioritization guidelines from the the federal Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP)(link is external) and the Wisconsin State Disaster Medical Advisory Committee (SDMAC).
We are in Phase 1A of the vaccine prioritization guidelines. Right now, in the early weeks of Phase 1A, the few doses we have are available to frontline health care providers and skilled nursing facility staff and residents. As vaccine supply increases, other health care personnel and long-term care facility residents and staff will be offered COVID-19 vaccination. We expect that it will take several months to vaccinate everyone eligible in Phase 1A.
After we get more vaccine supply and vaccinate those in Phase 1A, we anticipate that Phase 1B may include persons aged ≥75 years and non–health care frontline essential workers. Then we anticipate in Phase 1C, persons aged 65–74 years, persons aged 16–64 years with high-risk medical conditions, and essential workers not included in Phase 1B will start receiving COVID-19 vaccine. This information is subject to change based on further guidlines and vaccine supply.
While you are waiting for your turn to get the vaccine, there are a few things you can do.

It is important to continue wearing masks, physical distancing, washing our hands, and getting tested and isolating if you have signs and symptoms of COVID-19. If we continue to use all these COVID-19 precaution tools, we stand the best chance of getting our families, communities, schools, and workplaces “moving forward” sooner.
How many vaccine doses have been allocated to Wisconsin? How many people have been vaccinated?
The first shipments of vaccine arrived in Wisconsin on Monday, December 14, with the first vaccinations occurring that afternoon. Hospitals and clinics have a number of steps they must take in order to begin administering the vaccine. They are doing everything they can to vaccinate as quickly and safely as possible. As efforts ramp up, we expect to see the amount of people vaccinated keep pace with the amount of vaccine shipped to Wisconsin.
From December 14 through 20, the first week of Wisconsin’s COVID-19 Vaccination Program rollout, the state’s vaccine data are as follows:
84,825 doses of Pfizer and 100,000 doses of Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine have been allocated to Wisconsin.
10,358 total doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered and reported to the Wisconsin Immunization Registry, including 10,358 doses of Pfizer.
These numbers will be updated weekly. The federal government will continue to provide Wisconsin with vaccine doses as more supply becomes available. Allocations of the FDA-authorized vaccines are expected to increase in the coming weeks and months.
