Texas Sued For Classifying Gender-Affirming Care As Child Abuse

Source: huff post

Civil rights groups say Gov. Greg Abbott's new policy violates Texas law and the rights of transgender kids and their parents.

By Lydia O'Connor 03/01/2022 03:51pm EST

....................Tuesday’s lawsuit was filed on behalf of one of the first families investigated under Abbott’s new policy, which includes a mother who works for the family services department tasked with conducting those investigations. The agency has placed her on administrative leave, and investigators have shown up at her door, the lawsuit states, leaving her worried she may permanently lose her livelihood.

Her daughter, a 16-year-old identified as Mary Doe in the lawsuit, “has been diagnosed with gender dysphoria, a serious medical condition, and is currently receiving medically necessary care for the treatment of her gender dysphoria,” the lawsuit details.

“We are terrified for Mary’s health and wellbeing, and for our family. I feel betrayed by my state and the agency for whom I work,” her mother wrote in a declaration filed with the lawsuit.

“Being able to be affirmed as who she is, including through the course of treatment prescribed by her doctors,” she continued, “has brought Mary significant relief and allowed her to thrive.”

Why the Senate is taking a doomed vote on abortion rights

Source: vox.com

Democrats want to show voters they tried on abortion rights.

The Senate on Monday will take its first vote on the Women’s Health Protection Act, a bill aimed at codifying the right to an abortion.

Democrats hope to use the vote to show support for abortion rights as they come under attack in numerous states, and as they face a challenge in the Supreme Court. The vote, however, is widely expected to fail: Republicans are broadly opposed to the legislation and will likely filibuster it. Once filibustered, the bill would need 60 votes to advance, support it doesn’t currently have in a 50-50 Senate.

Democrats don’t appear to be fully united on the vote, either: Only 48 of the 50 lawmakers in the Senate Democratic caucus have signed on to co-sponsor this bill. Sens. Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Bob Casey (D-PA) have not sponsored the legislation, though Casey has said he’ll back Monday’s vote, which is to open debate on the bill. Manchin has yet to indicate whether he’d support the bill or Monday’s procedural vote.

On the Republican side, Sens. Susan Collins (R-ME) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) have both backed abortion rights in the past, though Collins has previously said she thinks the Women’s Health Protection Act is too expansive, and Murkowski hasn’t said where she stands.

Although it’s a doomed bill, the consideration of the Women’s Health Protection Act is still important. By holding a vote on the legislation, Democrats are highlighting abortion rights as a priority and getting lawmakers — including vulnerable Republicans — on the record about where they stand. .........................

@RepLizCheney: Marjorie Taylor Greene now using her official USG congressional account to promote

Does she expect loser McCarthy to do something?? [I think not] McCarthy is as scared of Trump as the rest of the Repugs are.

@RepLizCheney
Marjorie Taylor Greene now using her official USG congressional account to promote anti-Semitic, white supremacist, pro-Hitler, pro-Putin conference. This is a toxin in the bloodstream of America. It must stop.

House GOP Leaders: Have you lost all sense of decency?

Trump’s cpac speech tonight is set against the background of Russia continuing to invade Ukraine. I’ll be watching to see if trump doubles down on his Vladimir Putin praise or if he falls in line with the rest of the GOP or if he just pretends the invasion isn’t happening at all

Tweet is now deleted. Seems it was a mistake-Kadyrov (Chechen Republic) not wanting to fight.......

@duty2warn
We tweeted a story about Kadyrov (Chechen Republic) not wanting to fight Ukraine. We tweeted a video of him, which was also tweeted by Alex Vindman. Too many other sources spoke to the contrary, that Kadyrov's forces were in Ukraine, fighting for Russia. We deleted our tweet.

Whow. such good news for the people of Ukraine

I wish he would have said Putin's war vs Russsia's war.

Duty To Warn 🔉@duty2warn·19m

Just In: The leader of the Chechen Republic says he "does not want to fight against Ukraine.” This is the guy who commands the "shock troops" which are meant to terrorize Ukraine. He says he and his forces are now out of "Russia’s war" in Ukraine.
