Redistricting Input Opportunities

Time is running out! You can express your opinions on redistricting by attending an in person meeting.* You can also comment on line by following this link.** To do your research and get background information follow this link:

https://www.ncleg.gov/Redistricting

Redistricting is the process of drawing the districts from which public officials are elected. Once elected, the districts define who those officials represent during their terms in office. Members of the United States House of Representatives, the North Carolina Senate and the North Carolina House of Representatives are elected by district.

Find your representatives here:

https://www.house.gov/

https://www.ncleg.gov/Senate

https://www.ncleg.gov/House

The North Carolina General Assembly is required to redraw these districts following each decennial census due to population changes and the need to maintain equal representation. Due to legal challenges, there is often mid-decade redistricting activity as well.

Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Discuss Misinformation With Silicon Valley's Biggest Critics
BY ELIANA DOCKTERMAN
OCTOBER 20, 2020 2:02 PM EDT

Anyone who has watched The Social Dilemma already knows that technology has fundamentally warped the way we see the world. But Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, have become invested in holding technology companies accountable for the misinformation spread on platforms like Facebook. For a special TIME100 Talks hosted by The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, the couple sat down with two experts Tristan Harris, a Silicon Valley veteran who co-founded the Center of Humane Technology and appeared in The Social Dilemma, and Safiya Noble, author of Algorithms of Oppression.

During the discussion, Noble touched on Meghan’s own experience being the target of online hate. Noble explained that if you are part of a community “targeted with hate, disinformation, calls for genocide, calls for racist violence against you, misogyny, as Meghan I know you know so profoundly, the technologies are able to…amplify those kinds of messages and those kinds of harms,” says Noble. “The harms don’t just live in the platform. They often extend to shaping behaviors that people also act upon.”

Harris added that technology companies’ profit imperative thrives on disinformation, controversial opinions or fake news. “They are competing to seduce us with that promise of virality,” he says, citing the hashtags that promise billions of views on a single TikTok video. “But of course that doesn’t reward what’s true, what’s credible, or what is really good for society.”

...snip...ultimately, he argues, individuals simply cannot put down their phones in a world that relies so heavily on tech...snip...

It’s up to the tech companies to self-regulate their content—or, failing that, governments to step in and impose restrictions. When Meghan and Harry asked how the truth might win out over virility, both Noble and Harris cast doubts as to whether the tech companies could be trusted to self police: Noble argues they have failed to do so, calling them “foxes guarding the henhouse”.

It doesn't matter how many groups or forums there are you would have to control the posters first.

You can't make people post exclusively in one place or another. There are plenty of groups that already have specified topics and yet General Discussion acts as a catch all because people are either too lazy or just not interested in exploring the groups and forums that already exist and are already created for specified content.

I used to try to steer posters to forums that are designed for specific content. I quickly got tired of trying because many don't look beyond the noses on their faces, and don't look for the specifically named and designated group and post there.

There are just too many cases to keep up with therefore General Discussion fills with fast moving posts that are difficult to find later, should one desire to find them. This is just because someone didn't take the time to find the more appropriately designed location to post the content in and make the additional cross post.

For example, posts about North Carolina, there are many that get posted in GD, even in LBN, when they could be posted in the North Carolina group and simultaneously in GD, or cross posted by topic anywhere else, for that matter. Instead the posts sink like stones in GD and are rarely seen in the very place that is designed to provide a place for them.

So my vote is 'No' for adding the forum or group you are proposing. There's a multitude of places that aren't used already. Additionally, I don't believe people will take the time to use it, especially when the novelty wears off.

You can't control the posters and that's the real battle.

If anything, I believe that there should be fewer forums and groups. There are certainly many we wouldn't miss, because they aren't being used anyway.

So I think deleting, Not Adding is the way to better control the content. Especially since the posters themselves cannot be controlled.

That's my two cents.

Flame away.

Love this quote. . .

“Optimism is a mental mindset that strongly contributes to psychological resilience,” Lise said. She explained further: “We need to be able to imagine positive outcomes to problems in order to be motivated to work on our issues. That does not mean we have to be positive 100% of the time (which is impossible to do anyway). But it is important to be able to conceive positive outcomes instead of dwelling solely on negative outcomes.”

Madison Cawthorn's Competition

Yesterday babylonsister posted this thread

https://democraticunderground.com/100215857558

Which quickly shot to the top of Greatest and at this time is in second place.*
https://democraticunderground.com/?com=greatest_threads

The post was about an ad by a vet running against Cawthorn who represents NC-11 and has rightfully pissed a lot of Democrats off due to his Nazi loving behavior, among other things.

The exceptional video was well done and lead members of DU make donations to Mr. Remillard's campaign. Which is a good thing. But...yes, there's always a but. There's one important detail in the article posted by babylonsister and it is that...

Josh Remillard is one of a number of Democrats who are vying to face Cawthorn next year.

Another article said it this way on April 20, 2021
So far, five Democrats and one Republican have revealed plans to unseat the 25-year-old Nazi enthusiast in next year’s midterm, which is still 19 months away, making it the largest challenger field any incumbent from Cawthorn’s district has ever seen at this point in an election in over 20 years.
https://www.queerty.com/madison-cawthorn-shatters-record-historic-number-challengers-19-months-election-20210420

So you see, as wonderful the video is, Josh Remillard is only one of a broad field of Cawthorn's competition who are hoping to show Cawthorn the door next year.

In fact, the race is further complicated, because no one knows what the NC-11 boundaries are going to be right now. Redistricting hasn't started. Plus, we'll be getting an additional seat this year due to North Carolina's population expansion.

My point is this, if you are going to donate to the NC-11 race, where there are now six Democrats running against Cawthorn, please consider taking the time to examine the media and political positions of the other candidates before you decide to make donations.

*ETA Greatest updates regularly. The post achieved a high rank, second place at the time.

Thank you.

...election myth inspired thousands of TFG supporters to take over the Repub Party at local level

The stolen election myth inspired thousands of Trump supporters to take over the Republican Party at the local level, exerting more partisan influence on how elections are run.

https://www.propublica.org/article/heeding-steve-bannons-call-election-deniers-organize-to-seize-control-of-the-gop-and-reshape-americas-elections

ProPublica is a nonprofit newsroom that investigates abuses of power. Sign up to receive our biggest stories as soon as they’re published.

One of the loudest voices urging Donald Trump’s supporters to push for overturning the presidential election results was Steve Bannon. “We’re on the point of attack,” Bannon, a former Trump adviser and far-right nationalist, pledged on his popular podcast on Jan. 5. “All hell will break loose tomorrow.” The next morning, as thousands massed on the National Mall for a rally that turned into an attack on the Capitol, Bannon fired up his listeners: “It’s them against us. Who can impose their will on the other side?”

When the insurrection failed, Bannon continued his campaign for his former boss by other means. On his “War Room” podcast, which has tens of millions of downloads, Bannon said President Trump lost because the Republican Party sold him out. “This is your call to action,” Bannon said in February, a few weeks after Trump had pardoned him of federal fraud charges.

The solution, Bannon announced, was to seize control of the GOP from the bottom up. Listeners should flood into the lowest rung of the party structure: the precincts. “It’s going to be a fight, but this is a fight that must be won, we don’t have an option,” Bannon said on his show in May. “We’re going to take this back village by village … precinct by precinct.”

Precinct officers are the worker bees of political parties, typically responsible for routine tasks like making phone calls or knocking on doors. But collectively, they can influence how elections are run. In some states, they have a say in choosing poll workers, and in others they help pick members of boards that oversee elections.

About littlemissmartypants

I read voraciously and fast with high comprehension. I love to learn and share. But I will never, ever post anything in LBN again because someone always seems to find fault with my posts. I've had too many locked for stupid reasons to ever take LBN seriously ever again. I now just trash it. Which is a shame since there are individuals who are regular posters there that I love. I just send all not truly LBN and LBN dupes to the Trash from now on. No need to even bother any hosts with those anymore. Using Ignore and Trash are proving to be much easier and better options for me than trying to engage and attempt to make LBN a better place. I'm also getting tired of this place looking like the Trump Underground. Trashing every iteration of the surname and all of the clever nicknames people have created make it virtually impossible not to see posts about the psychopath that is the Republican party's preferred presidential candidate. Oh, well. GOTV!
