my Uncle was part of one of the liberation units of Dachau.

Though the anniversary today is about Auschwitz, the remembrance, I believe, is about all the people that were put in these horrible death camps. It is a day that we should celebrate the beginning of the end of the German concentration camps. We should celebrate the heroes that suffered the atrocities. Both those that survived and those that didn't. We should celebrate those that fought to stop these horrors, regardless of what that meant for themselves.

It is a day we should mourn the loss of millions of innocent people. The loss of spirit as well as life. We should mourn the loss of the humanity by what were previously good people, who then kept silent, allowing this to happen.

It is a day that we should remember as we look at what is happening today.

My uncle was part of one of the liberation units for one of the camps. It wasn't Auschwitz, it was Dachau, another of the murder/torture camps. He never spoke in detail about it to his nieces and nephews. I know it changed him drastically.

He was only 6 months away from graduating from college when he joined the Army in 1944. Two of his older brothers were "in for the duration." Both were heroes, one receiving the Bronze Star. He needed to be a part of it.

My grandparents were so relieved on VE day that the 3 blue stars in their window were never going to turn gold. They were relieved that their youngest living son wasn't going to witness the horrors his brothers did. Or so they thought. They didn't know yet what my uncle had seen.

He came home completely changed. He became a raging alcoholic, among other changes, mostly emotional stability. It was only through his wife and brothers we heard any of what he saw. Things that were so horrible even fellow AA member were changed. It even changed family members that only heard some of the stories. The fact he was so changed, just witnessing the aftermath of the atrocities, lends just a small nugget understanding about what the victims endured. He had no sympathy for the German people, knowing that they allowed this to happen to their fellow countrymen and others around Europe. He said that there was absolutely no way they didn't know. He had been a devout Catholic but that also changed. He couldn't be part of a church that helped these annihilators escape. He stopped believing in god.

My heart goes out to all that suffered. I can't wrap my head around what was done to these people. How so many could treat another human being like they did is beyond me. The people that went through these camps are all heroes. Each and every one of them. The survivors that are still speaking out need to be heard, loud and clear.

"If we forget the past, we're doomed to repeat it." I don't know who that quote belongs to but it is something that should be repeated constantly. I look at what we allow to happen with minorities, black men especially, the poor the mentally ill and the Muslim community in this country and it scares and angers me. How far from what Germany did to the Jews, LGBT, Gypsies, etc, are we? At what point will we demand it stop? Even propaganda is unacceptable, yet we have people like Bill OReilly screaming about Muslims and their supposed agenda to end America while young black men and boys are gunned down by law enforcement without any consequence.

Today we should look at where we are headed by remembering the past.

Drone lands in tree at White House - Updates included

Happened early this morning and is still being investigated

Police, fire and other emergency vehicles swarmed around the White House in the pre-dawn hours, with several clustered near the southeast entrance to the mansion. The White House was dark and the entire perimeter was on lockdown until around 5 a.m., when pass holders who work in the complex were allowed inside.

"There is a device that has been recovered by the Secret Service at the White House,'' said press secretary Josh Earnest. "The early indications are that it does not pose any sort of ongoing threat to anybody at the White House.''

I know we all know Fox News is a joke

But this takes the cake.

From Gawker.com

Fox News Host: We Have Saved The Planet With Wars Like Iraq.

If it wasn't for Americans dying around the world, the rest of the world would be in abject poverty.

"We have saved the planet," concluded Payne, "and if we go away as [the world's] policeman, it's going to be hell to pay for everyone."

This is some really out there stuff. People who watch and believe this stuff must have something wrong with their minds. Logic isn't anywhere near these proclamations.

I really don't understand how these people can be called "news" people. Should be something like, Fairy Tales with Fox & Friends

Do you have a problem with the POTUS saying "God bless"

Do you have a problem with the POTUS saying "God bless" after the State of the Union address, or any other speech?

"Girls Town" in Chicago Makes National Top Ten Neighborhood List

Andersonville on Chicago's Northside makes the national top 10 neighborhoods in the nation list.

Andersonville has been the referred to as "Girls Town" for years. It is rife with restaurants, cool little shops, Gay and Lesbian bars and just a ton of great people.

Any given time of day you can see same sex couples walking hand in hand down the street. Mostly female couples. Hamburger Mary's is one of the hot spots both day and night.

My favorite Lesbian bar, well, second favorite, Stargaze, was there for years until it had to close because of funds a few years ago. It was run by a beautiful Lesbian couple and Dusty, one of the owners, was always behind the bar making everyone feel great.

I'm so happy!

Like every neighborhood we come into and make wonderful, this will probably push us out. There goes the gayborhood!

But for now, I'm celebrating. Maybe I will venture out to The Parlor tonight. I'm too old to troll the bars anymore but wtf! This deserves a celebration!

So Ernst is a true Republican, her dad suddenly awarded numerous gov contracts when she took office

Montgomery County records reveals that Culver Construction – a construction company owned by Ernst’s father, Richard Culver – received $215,665 in county contracts during Ernst’s tenure as auditor. The six contracts, all awarded between 2009 and 2010, included five totaling $204,794 from Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for such projects as road and flood damage repairs.

County supervisors approved FEMA contracts for Culver ranging in size from an $8,960 grant in December 2010 for the repair of three flood-damaged sites to a $63,501 contract for secondary road construction in August 2009. Supervisors also approved FEMA contracts for Culver of $32,425, $40,428, and $59,480.

many of us here wore bread bags in the winter

INSIDE our boots. Either over our socks or over shoes that then had those big boots that went over shoes. Because it kept your feet dry and warmer.

But never on the outside of your boots.

Either she is remembering incorrectly or she lived in a community where all the parents just weren't too bright. If worn outside the shoe/boot the plastic would rip or the kid would be sliding around once on a wet floor.

Maybe the parents were a little sadistic and get a kick out of watching the kids fall.

Whatever reason she stated it the way she did, it was a pretty ridiculous thing to say. What point did she make? We were upper middle class and used the bag trick so it had nothing to do with money. Certainly had nothing to do with the SOTU address.

Just made her sound pathetic and stupid.
