Man in 'Camp Auschwitz' sweatshirt during Capitol riot identified

A rioter who stormed the US Capitol Wednesday wearing a sweatshirt emblazoned with the phrase "Camp Auschwitz" has been identified as Robert Keith Packer of Virginia, according to three sources who spoke with CNN.

An image of Packer inside the Capitol, whose sweatshirt bore the name of the Nazi concentration camp where about 1.1 million people were killed during World War II, has evoked shock and disbelief on social media. The bottom of his shirt stated, "Work brings freedom," which is the rough translation of the phrase "Arbeit macht frei" that was on the concentration camp's gates.
Packer did not respond to CNN's requests for comment.

One Virginia resident, who spoke to CNN on the condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter, described Packer as a long-time extremist who has had run-ins with the law.
"He's been always extreme and very vocal about his beliefs," the resident said.
Another source familiar with Packer described him as an "off-beat" character who has expressed frustrations with the government, though this source did not recall Packer ever talking about President Donald Trump or false allegations of voter fraud.

We knew this could happen. Horrible.

Dave Wasserman on why Congressional R's keep sticking with Trump

It's all about getting re-elected.

https://twitter.com/Redistrict/status/1347959033286840321?s=20

The reality is that there's far more electoral downside for most congressional Rs in opposing Trump than sticking with him.

It's the rationalization cycle that, from Muslim ban to Access Hollywood to the Capitol siege, will keep allowing the envelope to be pushed w/ few limits.

Meet the guy who leads the group that organized the rally and coup

The Alabama Attorney General.

Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall plays a critical role in the group that helped organize the protest and rally that preceded the riots, attack and attempted insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday.

Marshall leads the Republican Attorneys General Association’s dark-money nonprofit Rule of Law Defense Fund, which is listed as a participating organization for the March to Save America on the march’s website, as are the groups Stop the Steal, Tea Party Patriots and Turning Point Action. The website is now down, but archived versions show RLDF as a participating group.

Prior to the protest, RLDF sent out robocalls detailing when and where citizens should meet, which was first reported by Documented.
“I’m calling for the Rule of Law Defense Fund with an important message,” the robocall stated, according to Documented. “The march to save America is tomorrow in Washington D.C. at the Ellipse in President’s Park between E St. and Constitution Avenue on the south side of the White House, with doors opening at 7:00 a.m. At 1:00 p.m., we will march to the Capitol building and call on Congress to stop the steal. We are hoping patriots like you will join us to continue to fight to protect the integrity of our elections. For more information, visit MarchtoSaveAmerica.com. This call is paid for and authorized by the Rule of Law Defense Fund, 202-796-5838.”

Marshall on Wednesday issued a statement condemning the violence at the Capitol but did not mention his role leading a group that helped organize the march.

Twitter just permanently suspended Trump

https://twitter.com/MeidasTouch/status/1347685779242323968

Statement from Twitter: Permanent suspension of @realDonaldTrump
By Twitter Inc.
Friday, 8 January 2021
After close review of recent Tweets from the @realDonaldTrump account and the context around them — specifically how they are being received and interpreted on and off Twitter — we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence.

In the context of horrific events this week, we made it clear on Wednesday that additional violations of the Twitter Rules would potentially result in this very course of action. Our public interest framework exists to enable the public to hear from elected officials and world leaders directly. It is built on a principle that the people have a right to hold power to account in the open.

However, we made it clear going back years that these accounts are not above our rules entirely and cannot use Twitter to incite violence, among other things. We will continue to be transparent around our policies and their enforcement.

Manchin shoots down proposed round of $2,000 stimulus checks

https://twitter.com/thehill/status/1347602520336723975?s=20

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) on Friday voiced firm opposition to providing $2,000 stimulus checks, putting the moderate lawmaker at odds with most congressional Democrats and even some Republicans.

“Absolutely not. No,” Manchin told The Washington Post in an interview when asked if he supported boosting direct payments to $2,000. “Getting people vaccinated, that’s job No. 1.”

Can Nancy Pelosi ban anyone not wearing a mask from the House chamber?

I just wondered because a freshman GOP member from Kansas just tested positive and refused to wear a mask Wednesday when they were all holed up together.

https://twitter.com/drericding/status/1347365045332815872?s=21

Worried—Freshman GOP Kansas Congressman Jake LaTurner tests #COVID19 positive. Is 11th House member of 117th Congress—all of the same party.

But what worries me is MOCs were all holed up together yesterday during the siege. Many maskless. He was likely infectious.
