“I’m not 20. I don’t want to be 20, but I’m really freaking cool. That’s what I think about when I’m posting a photo.”

Photographed with a hip thrust forward to show off her Margiela apron dress and modishly frayed jeans, Lyn Slater projects a kind of swagger pretty rare among her peers. A professor at the Graduate School of Social Service at Fordham University, with hyper-chic side gigs as a model and blogger, she is known to a wider public as an Instagram idol.

Sure, she’s 64, a time when some women her age are feeling pressed to close up shop. But if you are Ms. Slater, that’s not going to happen.

On Accidental Icon, her influential Instagram account, she tends to vamp in an eye-catching mash-up of Comme des Garçons, Yohji Yamamoto and consignment store finds. Her following, hundreds of thousands strong, skews young, she said, and is responsive to her sass.

The immigration debate is heating up as protests erupt around the nation, including here in Phoenix.
Different community groups came together to protest what they're calling "a broken immigration system." People passionate about immigration reform packed into Central United Methodist Church in response to the recent undocumented immigration crackdown.

Where have all the "Progressives" gone?

I am, first of all, not sure we all agree on the definition of the word.

Some time ago, I followed a link to Daily Kos posted by a member here. I understand now why DU, or indeed no other single source, can be all things to all Democrats. We are a diverse group who resist being herded into a single pen.

If I can't say it better, it is a pleasure to share what I think is a reflection of diversity and progressive values. After all, it is just an opinion.

This incredible ad from a New York progressive candidate is exactly what the Democrats need

These days, it’s easy to come off as a member of #TheResistance — plenty of Republicans have defected from the dictator-loving GOP and racked up the retweets for their anti-Trump social media missives. Democrats, of course, are all unified in opposing everything that Trump does and says, which is great, but we have to not only stand up to the egomaniac in front of us, but also examine the problems that got us to this point in our history.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s primary campaign against Joe Crowley had earned a little bit of coverage, but her press team couldn’t find any news outlet willing to premiere her new campaign ad. “They were like, ‘no, no, no,’ so I was like, alright, I’m just going to put it on Twitter,” the 28-year-old political organizer tells Progressives Everywhere. “Thankfully it turned out really well.”

The Despicable Republican "Conservative" Sycophants

My father died from an aggressive form of brain cancer. He was a combat war vet who served his country. I have been reflecting on him while I watch members of McCain’s tribe attack him while he battles for his life. Where is the empathy for him and his family? Back off you Republican sorry excuses for human beings.

I have been living in Arizona for decades. During that time the “Maverick” has only on rare occasions stood against his party and his own ambitions. While I have disagreed very vocally with his policy positions related to the military, approvals of spying on Americans, the banking industry, hawkish war mongering and hypocritical challenges regarding the ethics of Democratic colleagues, the current character attacks coming from rumpians are disgusting to me.
In headlines, my take on just a few of the good, the bad and the ugly moments during his long political career.

Torture is illegal and immoral, I oppose the selection of Haspel to lead the CIA.

Keating Scandal Still Haunts McCain

Sen. John McCain's ethics entanglement with a wealthy banker ultimately convicted of swindling investors was such a disturbing, formative experience in his political career that he compares the scandal in some ways to the five years he was tortured as a prisoner of war in Vietnam.

"I faced in Vietnam, at times, very real threats to life and limb," McCain told The Associated Press. "But while my sense of honor was tested in prison, it was not questioned. During the Keating inquiry, it was, and I regretted that very much."
In his early days as a freshman senator, McCain was known for accepting contributions from Charles Keating Jr., flying to the banker's home in the Bahamas on company planes and taking up Keating's cause with U.S. financial regulators as they investigated him.

The Keating Five was the derisive name given McCain and four Democratic senators, including then-Sen. John Glenn of Ohio, who were defendants in a congressional ethics investigation of their connections to Keating. McCain is the only one still in the Senate. They were accused of trying to intimidate regulators on behalf of Keating, a real estate developer in Arizona and owner of Lincoln Savings and Loan based in Irvine, Calif.

Rage rising on the McCain campaign trail

From Ed Henry and Ed Hornick

(CNN) -- With recent polls showing Sen. Barack Obama's lead increasing nationwide and in several GOP-leaning states, some Republicans attending John McCain-Sarah Palin campaign rallies are showing a new emotion: rage.

At a rally in Minnesota on Friday, a woman told McCain: "I don't trust Obama. I have read about him and he's an Arab."
McCain shook his head and said, "No ma'am, no ma'am. He's a decent family man...[a] citizen that I just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues. That's what this campaign is all about."

"I want to be president of the United States, and I don't want Obama to be," he said. "But I have to tell you, I have to tell you, he is a decent person, and a person that you do not have to be scared as President of the United States."

McCain plans massive boost in defense spending to restore military dominance
Aligns goals with Trump, who pledges to end sequestration

By Stephen Dinan - The Washington Times - Monday, January 16, 2017

Sen. John McCain called Monday for a massive boost in defense spending totaling more than $85 billion per year over the next half-decade, saying that is just the beginning of what it will take to restore the U.S. military to a dominant role.
The Senate Armed Services Committee chairman’s plans, detailed in a white paper, are an important marker, laying out defense hawks’ wish list as Congress prepares to debate budget priorities under the Trump administration.

Mr. McCain, Arizona Republican, said that after years of bleeding, the Pentagon will struggle to fight the war on terrorism while preparing to engage emerging threats in Russia and China.

The Defense Department, he said, needs more fighter aircraft, a giant increase in the number of ships in the Navy, boosts in the number of Marines and Air Force personnel and a major modernization of the Army that has been due for decades.
Mr. McCain also called for ending the budget caps imposed by the 2011 debt deal, which left the Pentagon struggling financially, and wreaked havoc on the budget, forcing Congress to use gimmicks to add money back into the Defense Department.

McCain Provides a Dramatic Finale on Health Care: Thumb Down

By Carl Hulse

July 28, 2017

WASHINGTON — All week long, Senate Democrats had quietly groused that Senator John McCain made a stirring return to the Senate after a brain cancer diagnosis, that he preached the virtues of bipartisanship — and that he then backed a Republican-only push to replace the Affordable Care Act.

But early Friday morning, Mr. McCain, showing little sign of his grave illness, strode onto the Senate floor as the vote was being taken to repeal it, and shocked many of his colleagues and the nation. He sought recognition from the vote counters, turned his thumb down, and said “no.” There were gasps and some applause.

He had just derailed the fevered Republican effort to undo the Obama-era health care law

McCain says he regrets picking Palin as running mate

By Morgan Gstalter - 05/05/18

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said he regrets choosing former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) to be his running mate during the 2008 presidential campaign.

The New York Times reported on Saturday that McCain, while still defending Palin’s performance, said in his upcoming book, “The Restless Wave: Good Times, Just Causes, Great Fights, and other Appreciations,” that he wishes he had instead selected former Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I-Conn.)

His advisers reportedly had warned against choosing Lieberman, who was once a Democrat, stating that Lieberman’s support of abortion rights could divide Republicans.

John McCain opposes CIA nominee Gina Haspel

Sen. John McCain is urging the Senate to reject Gina Haspel, President Trump's pick to run the CIA, claiming Haspel's "refusal to acknowledge torture's immorality is disqualifying."

McCain, who is home at his ranch in Arizona as he battles brain cancer, made the statement after Haspel testified in her confirmation on Capitol Hill Wednesday morning. McCain said Haspel had a chance to "explain her involvement in the so-called enhanced interrogation program during the Bush administration, and account for the mistakes the country made in torturing detainees held" after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Russian propaganda evades YouTube's flagging system with BuzzFeed-style knockoffs

Excerpts:

There is, however, one distinct difference between ICYMI's videos and any other two-minute news blast on YouTube: Host Polly Boiko's monologues are part of Russia Today, the English-language media company known as RT and backed by the Russian government.

NBC News discovered the connection through registration information of ICYMI's website, which lists the same entity as the registration for RT's website.

Russia-backed channels such as Russia Today. In one video, Boiko discusses the poisoning of U.K. double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter — with users having no clear way of knowing about the video's connection to Russia's media efforts.
In another, Boiko, in a "Dark Side of the Moon" Pink Floyd T-shirt, complains that the West blames Russia for all of its problems.

WASHINGTON—The real-estate company run by the family of White House adviser Jared Kushner in mid-March received a federal grand-jury subpoena for information related to paperwork the company filed in New York City concerning its rent-regulated tenants, according to people familiar with the matter.

The subpoena, part of an investigation by prosecutors in the Brooklyn U.S. attorney’s office, came shortly after an Associated Press article about the company having filed documents that said it had zero rent-regulated tenants,...

More tech workers can't afford to live where they work

More tech workers can’t afford to live where they work — and neither can teachers and first responders
Teachers, first responders, restaurant workers and, surprisingly, computer programmers have the hardest time affording a home near their jobs.

Real estate listing company Trulia defines affordability as one's monthly payment on housing taking up no more than 31 percent of one's paycheck

Demand is high and supply is low, especially at the lower end of the housing scale.
…snip
But it's not just in California, where home prices are highest. Barely half of programmers in Chicago; Charleston, South Carolina; Minneapolis; and Newark, New Jersey, can afford to buy the median-priced home. The numbers are even lower in Portland, Oregon, and Miami.

Split California into 3 parts ballot initiative in November

SF Gate
By Trapper Byrne

A Bay Area venture capitalist who thinks California’s political system is dysfunctional says he’s collected enough signatures to put a measure on the November ballot to split the state in three.

Tim Draper says he’ll submit more than 600,000 signatures to the secretary of state next week for a measure that would divide the state into what he’s tentatively labeled NorCal, SoCal and Cal, which would include the Central Coast and the Los Angeles Basin. The Bay Area would be in NorCal.

A total of 366,000 valid signatures would be needed to put the idea before voters.
If the new measure does qualify and voters go for it, Congress would still have to ratify the split.

Housing affordability weakening at fastest pace in a quarter century

Housing affordability weakening at fastest pace in a quarter century
CNBC Diana Olick

It is the perfect storm: Rising home prices, rising mortgage rates and rising demand are colliding with a critical shortage of homes for sale.

And all of that is slamming housing affordability, which is causing more of today's buyers to overstretch their budgets. This year, affordability – a metric based solely on the amount of the monthly mortgage payment – will weaken at the fastest pace in a quarter century, according to researchers at Arch Mortgage Insurance.

The average mortgage payment, based on the median priced home, increased by 5 percent in the first quarter of 2018 nationally and could go up another 10 percent to 15 percent by the end of the year, according to their report.
Snip…

With no relief in either inventory or home price appreciation in sight, the housing market is likely to become even more competitive this year.

At some point, however, there will come a breaking point when sales slow, which is already beginning to happen in some cities. Home prices usually lag sales, so if history holds true, price gains should start to ease next year.
