Global Citizen's Festival-A request from Carole King

I didn't watch the whole show carried on MSNBC. They put on a great show with a diverse audience and leaning 30 or under in Central Park. I did watch a new band, new to me, H.E.R. As the camera panned the audience, a large number was singing along while they performed. People like these give me some hope that "we are the change we are waiting for".

King took the mic after her set. She said, "I want your help calling your Senators and Congressmen. I've been working on saving the NW forests for 30 years." She wants legislation passed protecting these lands from logging and mining interests. "This land is our Land."

I'll make my calls on Monday. We hope you will consider action.

If we don't put some constraints on this administration they will put a for sale sign on public lands, and parks and lakes and mountains. Pollute our water sources or sell for a profit, It's suicide. imo

"Who's afraid of the big, bad wolf?" Not Wallstreet,

More BS, markets not reacting. I submit an example of "mocking" for clarification:

Cindy McCain, widow of the late Sen. John McCain, distanced herself from the Republican Party during the taping of a podcast that was released Wednesday.

"If you're not walking the line, then you're out. That's just not right. That's not the party that my husband and I belonged to."

McCain said she believes Arizona, a historically Republican state, could go the other way in the 2020 election.

"I can see us going Democrat, I really can," she said.
But McCain said she's staying out of politics for the time being.

New UN climate report

https://www.msn.com/en-us/weather/topstories/new-un-climate-report-massive-change-already-here-for-worlds-oceans-and-frozen-regions/ar-AAHP17O?li=BBnbfcL

The Washington Post
New U.N. climate report: Massive change already here for world’s oceans and frozen regions

Chris Mooney, Brady Dennis
9/25/19

Climate change is already causing staggering impacts on the oceans and ice-filled regions that encompass 80 percent of the Earth, and future damage from rising seas and melting glaciers is now all but certain, according to a sobering new report from the United Nations.

The warming climate is already killing coral reefs, supercharging monster storms, and fueling deadly marine heat waves and record losses of sea ice. And Wednesday’s report on the world’s oceans, glaciers, polar regions and ice sheets finds that such effects only foreshadow a more catastrophic future as long as greenhouse gas emissions remain unchecked.

Given current emissions levels, a number of serious impacts are essentially unavoidable, says the report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Extreme floods that have historically struck some coastal cities and small island nations once every 100 years will become an annual occurrence by 2050, according to the IPCC. In addition, if emissions continue to increase, global sea levels could rise by more than three feet by the end of this century — around 12 percent higher than the group estimated as recently as 2013. Melting glaciers could harm water supplies, and warming oceans could wreck marine fisheries.

“As a result of excess greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, the ocean today is higher, warmer, more acidic, less productive and holds less oxygen,” said Jane Lubchenco, a former administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). “The conclusion is inescapable: The impacts of climate change on the ocean are well underway. Unless we take very serious action very soon, these impacts will get worse — much, much worse.”

Republicans Only Pretend to Be Patriots

There is a DU thread discussion on the front page.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/opinion/republicans-only-pretend-to-be-patriots/ar-AAHJJCC

The New York Times

Republicans Only Pretend to Be Patriots
Paul Krugman
9/24/19

Republicans have spent the past half-century portraying themselves as more patriotic, more committed to national security than Democrats. Richard Nixon’s victory in 1972, Ronald Reagan’s victory in 1980 and George W. Bush’s victory in 2004 (the only presidential election out of the past seven in which the Republican won the popular vote) all depended in part on posing as the candidate more prepared to confront menacing foreigners.

And Barack Obama faced constant, scurrilous accusations of being too deferential to foreign rulers. Remember the “apology tour,” or the assertions that he had bowed to overseas leaders?
But now we have a president who really is unpatriotic to the point of betraying American values and interests. We don’t know the full extent of Donald Trump’s malfeasance — we don’t know, for example, how much his policies have been shaped by the money foreign governments have been lavishing on his businesses. But even what we do know — his admitted solicitation of foreign help in digging up dirt on political rivals, his praise for brutal autocrats — would have had Republicans howling about treason if a Democrat had done it.
…snip
And once a party has decided to do whatever it takes to prevail politically, there’s no reason to expect the foul play to stop at the water’s edge. If a party is willing to rig political outcomes by preventing minorities from voting, if it’s willing to use extreme gerrymandering to retain power even when voters reject it, why won’t it be equally willing to encourage foreign powers to subvert U.S. elections? A bit of treason is just part of the package.

"These are the 8 states with the worst air pollution."

These are the 8 states with the worst air pollution.

Aylin Woodward
9/25/19

"Who's got the world's cleanest and safest air and water? AMERICA!" President Donald Trump tweeted earlier this month.

Unfortunately, that's not true.

The US ranks 10th worldwide when it comes to overall air quality, according to The Environmental Performance Index, an analysis by scientists at Yale and Columbia. Australia comes in first.
What's more, air quality in the US has been declining after decades of improvement, according to reporting from the Associated Press. Using data from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the AP found that there were 15% more bad air days per US city last year than the average from preceding years.

Read More: President Trump keeps falsely saying the US has the 'world's cleanest and safest air.' Actually, he's making pollution worse.

Climate activist Greta Thunberg wins 'alternative Nobel Prize'

By Johan Ahlander
9/25/19

STOCKHOLM, Sept 25 (Reuters) - Swedish teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg was named on Wednesday as one of four winners of the 2019 Right Livelihood Award, known as Sweden's alternative Nobel Prize.

Thunberg won the award "for inspiring and amplifying political demands for urgent climate action reflecting scientific facts," the Right Livelihood Foundation said in a statement.

Thunberg, 16, denounced world leaders on Monday for failing to tackle climate change in a speech at the start of a climate summit at the United Nations in New York.

She started solitary weekly protests outside Swedish parliament a year ago. Inspired by her, millions of young people poured onto streets around the world last Friday to demand governments attending the summit take emergency action.
