Blast From the Past

Here at long last, the photo of my great art project for the 2012 campaign season. I didn't put the President's name on the sign because I used the rising sun icon. Unfortunately those will need to be painted over for '16 when I might use that cool graphic of a woman's lips in red and blue with white stars for Hillary. I left plenty of white space to allow for several years' worth of adjustments. Not putting that much loving work into something only to waste any effort.

My neighbor took the picture for us one day when she found me working in the yard, dressed in several heavy layers of cold weather clothing. Made me look fatter than ever. Since then I've slowly worked off 50 lbs, resting awhile at each natural plateau so it will stay off. Not having any trouble with it now. I had a little pizza for lunch but then worked hard in the yard for two hours(at my friend's mom's house because her lazy no-good brother next door can't be bothered). But that's okay because it means I get to eat more dinner tonight. Maybe dessert too.

Pictures were before Brigid joined us. I don't think the entire word "MITT" on both sides of the rubber chicken will show in the picture though. Molly Maguire, for the few readers who might not already know (and be sick of) the story, loved to run around with Chicken Mitt, biting down and making it scream. Eventually she chewed off the head and I hung it upside down from the sign.

Sometimes we get 80-mph straightline winds through here, so a sign has to be very sturdy and well anchored. It was a miracle none of the little flags across the top blew away. I put them there in hopes of discouraging trash throwing at the sign, which also sets well back from the fence, though it was certainly easy to see from the street.

Thanks - I miss you folks too.

If you'll msg me directions for posting pictures on Du, I'll post the 2 I just received from the friend who took them during the 2012 campaign. Unfortunately it only shows my handcrafted sign, on which I left plenty of room for the name of the next Dem presidential candidate. Don't go to that much work for just one occasion. Anyway, the question arises whether they should be posted in the BOG since they're rather out of date, although the sign does feature the rising sun icon. Or rather my poor attempts to paint it. The donkey turned out okay, though. And it shows Molly's favorite toy of the time, the big yellow rubber squeaky chicken with the word MITT painted on both sides. And me over 50 lbs. ago, when I finally got serious about weight loss. Easy to keep off when you lose slowly.

Thanks for a GREAT OP

as anyone with an ounce of sense can see.

Well now, aren't YOU pleased with yourself!? (for no apparent reason)

You chose a most descriptive and appropriate avatar, though; I'll give you that.

What a desperate attempt to try to impress us with your self-proclaimed intellectual superiority. That sort of behavior is very telling and impresses no one over the age of 14 in a positive manner.

I've really enjoyed reading this thread

because I like to hope people are happy much of the time, especially during the holidays. It's been years since I had family around, so any chance I have to celebrate with others is welcome - beforehand. On Christmas Day itself, I prefer to be alone in peace and quiet. It's also the one day I unplug electronically. No outside news to spoil the day. I tend to spend a little extra on the 2 dogs but not much; they eat well all year anyway and as for toys, they prefer a frisbee or ball game to any of the expensive chew toys I've bought for them in the past. They really love small fallen tree branches to chew on. Today at the store I bought them kong toys to hide treats in; when I presented these wonderful items to Molly and Brigid, they just looked at me as if to say we're not hungry, fish out those treats yourself if you want one. Then they curled up and went to sleep. Guess I've been feeding them enough.

That ball game almost every day is what they really look forward to. It requires 3 balls and keeps me busy; the JR wants one thrown for her to chase, and the mini-beagle/pom mix likes to snatch one if she can and play keep away. The third is for me, because Brigid wont drop the ball she's retrieved unless I throw another one first. When it's finally time to quit, I try real hard to outsmart her by faking a throw so I can gather up all 3 balls and put them away - but it's not easy. She's on to most of my tricks, and by then all three balls are slippery with dog slobber so she can bump my hand and make me drop them....

That's my idea of fun. Nobody starts arguing politics or criticizes a single thing. It's our Peace Day in honor of the Prince of Peace.

Oh, and I sing one of my favorite Christmas songs for Molly and Brigid. "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer"

Where the hell do people get off laughing about making any kid cry? SICK!!!

So-called 'adults' who do so are sociopathic bullies. I despise them.

November 6, 2013

And who's to say she won't?

Some of the complaints and criticism really sound like pearl-clutching at best. Anyone knows a voice can be damaged. You think her parents and surrounding adults don't know that? Perhaps with this public exposure of her astounding talent - which NO ONE described as matured perfection - she might be able to secure professional help to reach that state of maturity safely. If she had to learn what she could from YouTube tutorials, you can bet she doesn't come from wealth. This talent show might've been the only chance she had for a successful, long career.

But people love to carp, I know that.

So, one's reach should never exceed one's grasp?

Unless the kid's trying to dethrone Callas right now, leave her alone and let her sing if she wants to sing. She certainly sings better than 99.9% of other people, including adults, a lot of whom are probably wrestling with their own feelings of comparative inadequacy. Sour grapes, anyone?

As for 'dancing bears', I seriously doubt she'd agree with you.

Micharel Junior's grandmother was a professional opera singer, btw, and trained him well. You should check out his PBS special or the soundtrack Dreamland.

November 5, 2013

Nobody said she's Maria Callas - yet. It's a talent show, fer cryin' out loud!

And I don't believe it's necessarily harmful to youngsters to let them sing when the spirit moves them. I watched a young man at the same age with his own PBS special several years ago, and his voice has since matured beautifully. They shouldn't be overworked, of course; but NOT silenced!

About IrishAyes

Still an ardent Irish-American Catholic damnYankee Yellow Dog Democrat socialist after all these years. (cue Simon music) Army brat and wife for many years, now have been on the loose far longer than I was married. After my two red chows died, I took in a mini-beagle cross that I named Molly Maguire, thinking she might need a good Irish name like my original real one. Later she got a baby sister, a smooth-coat JRT I named Brigid after the greatest of the ancient Celtic goddesses. My great-grandfather and his son fought for Michael Collins and barely made it out of Ireland one step ahead of John Bull. They slipped over to Wales for new identities and then forward to the States for a fresh start. That makes me second generation of illegal but certainly justified immigrants. There are precious few people to whose defense I fly immediately, but the list includes Hillary Clinton, President Barack Obama even when I disagree with him - it happens! - and living Irish patriots Gerry Adams and Martin \\\'Mind Your Kneecaps\\\' McGuiness. I pray earnestly for a united and free Ireland rescued from all official British occupation, with every square inch of alleged \\\'ancestral lands\\\' now held immorally and illegally by the invaders returned to the rightful owners. Irish-only rule for Ireland. No foreign masters anymore! I find it passing strange when Brits chide ME about \'interfering\' in Irish politics!
