LearningCurve's JournalIt's the guns stupid!
I understand the feelings in the wake of the Zimmerman verdict, but there is a lot of focus on one case, for many of the wrong reasons. There's blame for the police, Zimmerman, the prosecution, the jury, the state of Florida, etc. My feeling is we never even would have heard of Zimmerman if we had better gun laws.
If Zimmerman has no gun, I think he avoids the possibility of confrontation. If he has no gun, he doesn't shoot anyone. I think it's likely he observes anyone he feels is suspicious from the safety of a car.
I realize gun control legislation is difficult. Banning guns is currently a Constitutional impossibility, even if advisable. However, Democrats have thrown in the towel on the issue. Talking about a "national conversation on race" (again) or a boycott of Florida will ultimately do nothing to solve the problem.
Just because the challenge is difficult, and there is no perfect solution, doesn't mean we shouldn't do what we can.
Is it too soon to push for June 26 as Gay Day?
I know there is still a lot of work to be done, but it seems to me this is the watershed moment.
