Minnesota set for pivotal House battles

Source: The Hill

Minnesota will be a pivotal battleground in the midterm fight for the House majority, featuring five of 2018’s most contentious races.

Rep. Tim Walz’s (D) decision to run for governor has created an open seat in the 1st District, while freshman Rep. Jason Lewis (R) will try to hold on to his swing seat.

Buoyed by President Trump’s strong performance in the state, Republicans plan to go on the offensive in two seats currently held by Reps. Rick Nolan (D) and Collin Peterson (D). But Democrats have their own plans in the state, aiming to win over well-educated suburban voters who could help them oust Rep. Erik Paulsen (R).

That means five of the state’s eight seats will be getting national attention this year, making Minnesota one of the most competitive states in a cutthroat election cycle.

After four Minnesota congressional candidates appeared reluctant to pledge to support Ryan as speaker if elected, the Congressional Leadership Fund, one of the largest super PACs aligned with House Republicans, told The Washington Post it would “prioritize friends and family first.”

Hey, Minnesotans remember one thing, if these "republicans" get into office, they will vote to take away your earned benefits, they do not " "prioritize friends and family." There friends and family is the Koch's, Popes, Mercers, Alderson sitting in the back ground wanting to turn our state into another wisCONsin and that is there friends and family.

The debt trap: how the student loan industry betrays young Americans

Among the 44 million Americans who have amassed our nation’s whopping $1.4tn in student loan debt, a call from Navient can produce shivers of dread.

Navient is the primary point of contact, or the “servicer”, for more student loans in the United States than any other company, handling 12 million borrowers and $300bn in debt. The company flourished as student loan debt exploded under the Obama administration, and its stock rose sharply after the election of Donald Trump.

But Navient also has more complaints per borrower than any other servicer, according to a Fusion analysis of data. And these mounting complaints repeatedly allege that the company has failed to live up to the terms of its federal contracts, and that it illegally harasses consumers. Navient says most of the ire stems from structural issues surrounding college finance – like the terms of the loans, which the federal government and private banks are responsible for – not about Navient customer service.

Yet during a year-long investigation into who profits off of what has become the largest source of American consumer debt, Fusion TV untangled how Navient has positioned itself to dominate the lucrative student loan industry in the midst of this crisis, flexing its muscles in Washington and increasingly across the states. The story of Navient’s emerging power is also the story of how an industry built around the idea that education can break down inequities is reinforcing them.

Trump touts plan for 'major, major tax cuts' and praises Democrat in North Dakota

In a speech at a North Dakota oil refinery on Wednesday, Donald Trump touted his plans for major tax cuts – and praised a Democratic senator vulnerable to defeat in the 2018 midterms.

Trump flew in from Washington DC with Heidi Heitkamp, a top Republican target in a state the president won with 63% of the vote. On stage in Mandan, Trump praised Heitkamp, a moderate Democrat, as “a good woman”.

Such praise followed Trump’s agreement earlier in the day to a Democratic proposal for short-term extensions on the debt ceiling and government funding, a move which left congressional Republicans stunned.

In the main part of his speech, Trump outlined his four “basic principles” in his effort to reform the US tax code. The president emphasized “major, major tax cuts [for individuals], the biggest since Ronald Reagan” and an effort to cut “the business tax rate as much as possible, ideally [to] around 15%”. The top corporate tax rate is currently 35%.

Trump: Drought-stricken Dakotas better off than Harvey flood victims

Source: The Hill

President Trump said the drought-stricken Dakotas are “better off” than cities flooded by Hurricane Harvey last month, and that his administration will make the drought there "go away."

“I know you have a little bit of a drought. They had the opposite, believe me,” Trump said during a tax reform speech in Mandan, North Dakota.

“You’re better off. You are better off, they had the absolute opposite.”

Trump also said he was surprised that droughts could happen "this far north."

“We’re doing everything we can but you have a very serious drought. I just said to the governor, I didn’t know you had droughts this far north. Guess what: you have them,” he said.

White House Names Charities Receiving Trumps Hurricane Harvey Donations

Source: Talking Points Memo

The White House on Wednesday listed 12 organizations to which President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump had pledged to donate a total of $1 million as part of their Hurricane Harvey relief efforts.

Two organizations, Red Cross and Salvation Army, together received a majority of the sum, at $300,000 each. Reach Out America and Samaritan’s Purse each received $100,000. The remaining eight organizations — the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Catholic Charities, Direct Relief, Habitat for Humanity, Houston Humane Society, Operation Blessing, Portlight Inclusive Disaster Strategies and Team Rubicon — each received $25,000.

Four of the organizations are religiously affiliated. Two, the Humane Society and ASPCA, deal with animals. One, Portlight Inclusive Disaster Strategies, describes itself as facilitating “a variety of projects involving people with disabilities, including post-disaster relief work.” And Team Rubicon draws on the “skills and experiences of military veterans” and first responders following disasters.

TPM has reached out to each organization in an attempt to eventually confirm that they have received the money the White House claims they will.

House GOP group puts staff in six new districts

Source: The Hill

The Congressional Leadership Fund, a major GOP outside group that played a pivotal role in recent special elections, is putting boots on the ground in six new competitive congressional districts to get a head start on the 2018 midterm elections.

The group, which serves as the de facto super PAC of House Republican Leadership and Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), now has staff in 17 districts represented by vulnerable Republican lawmakers.

The new offices are in the districts represented by Reps. Mike Bost (Ill.), Kevin Yoder (Kan.), Ryan Costello (Penn.), Brian Fitzpatrick (Penn.), Tom MacArthur (N.J.) and Leonard Lance (N.J.).

“Our data-driven field program is expanding, but more importantly, our staff and interns are building relationships and having ongoing conversations with voters across key congressional districts fourteen months before the midterm elections,” said Corry Bliss, the group's executive director, in a statement.

Republican strategy on debt ceiling takes shape

Source: The Hill

Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn (R-Texas) vowed Tuesday to attach legislation raising the debt limit to a Hurricane Harvey relief bill the House is expected to approve on Wednesday, setting up a confrontation among Republicans in Congress.

Cornyn said Congress has no choice but to raise the debt ceiling now given the need for help in his home state, the escalating costs and the government’s diminishing coffers.

“It’s imperative that we get that supplemental passed,” Cornyn told reporters.

He said Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) had made the decision to tie the debt-limit hike to the Harvey bill.

“And the leader has made the decision to attach the debt limit to that, and I support that,” Cornyn said.

WH Memo Breaks With Trump, Urges DACA Recipients To Prep For Deportation

Source: Talking Points Memo

By NICOLE LAFOND Published SEPTEMBER 6, 2017 7:35 AM

A White House memo distributed Tuesday guided legislators to stick to the talking points that DACA, or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, recipients should prepare for deportation, according to the document obtained by ABC News.

The Department of Justice officially announced Tuesday that it would end DACA in six months. The program, which was created by former President Barack Obama through executive order, protects undocumented immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as minors from deportation.

And while the White House and President Donald Trump are urging Congress to come up with a legislative solution for the issue, the talking points from the administration told Congress that DACA recipients should “prepare for and arrange their departure from the United States.”

Hurricane Irma is most powerful ever in Atlantic as it hits Caribbean islands

Source: The Guardian

The most powerful Atlantic Ocean hurricane in recorded history bore down on the islands of the north-east Caribbean on Tuesday night local time, following a path predicted to then rake Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Cuba before possibly heading for Florida over the weekend.

At the far north-eastern edge of the Caribbean, authorities on the Leeward Islands of Antigua and Barbuda cut power and urged residents to shelter indoors as they braced for Hurricane Irma’s first contact with land early on Wednesday.

Officials warned people to seek protection from Irma’s “onslaught” in a statement that closed with: “May God protect us all.”

The category 5 storm had maximum sustained winds of 185 miles (295km) per hour by early Tuesday evening, according to the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami.
