Restaurant manager in Canada fired for refusing service to customer in MAGA hat

“As a person with a strong moral backbone, I had to take a stand.”

PATRICK SMITH JUN 30, 2018, 4:54 PM

Not every restaurant can be The Red Hen.

A restaurant in Canada fired its manager for refusing to serve a patron unless he removed his “Make America Great Again” hat.

In a statement, Sequoia Company of Restaurants, which owns the Teahouse in Vancouver said it fired the manager for violating its “philosophy of tolerance.”

But newly sacked former manager Darin Hodge says he has no regrets about the incident or his subsequent firing, saying “As a person with a strong moral backbone, I had to take a stand against this guest’s choice of headwear while in my former place of work.”

HHS official celebrates Kennedy retirement with anti-choice activists: 'We're just getting started'

With Justice Kennedy on the way out, the assault on women's rights is fully underway.

ADAM PECK JUN 30, 2018, 4:37 PM

It’s been less than a week since Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement from the Supreme Court, but already anti-women activists are plotting how best to take advantage of a weakened judicial branch in order to undermine access to safe abortions.

Kennedy was long thought to be the crucial swing vote on any legal challenge to Roe v. Wade, having already upheld the landmark decision in 1992. With his departure, Donald Trump will have an opportunity to nominate a second person to the bench, one who figures to be far less sympathetic towards women’s rights.

In case there was any doubt about the administration’s intentions behind filling Kennedy’s seat, the director of the Office for Civil Rights at the Department of Health and Human Services Roger Severino appeared at the National Right to Life Convention on Thursday in Overland Park, Kansas and assured the crowd of anti-woman activists that the Trump administration was “just getting started.”,

“Our president is fearless when it comes to life and conscience,” Severino added.

House Republicans are coming for your 401(k)

BY PAUL BLAND, OPINION CONTRIBUTOR — 06/30/18 03:00 PM EDT

Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chairman Jay Clayton recently acknowledged that the agency may soon take away hardworking Americans’ right to defend our retirement savings against corporate criminals in court. Now, another front seems to have opened in this war on investor protections — one that could leave anyone with an IRA or 401(k) at the mercy of corporations that would lie to or deceive people about their stocks.

Corporate America is working overtime to ensure investors harmed by financial fraud cannot hold them accountable. Industry lobbyists are pushing the SEC to block investors from joining together as a group to recover the losses from widespread violations of securities laws. Such a move would bar cheated investors from enforcing their own rights in lawsuits that have recovered billions and serve as a crucial deterrent to the kinds of devastating fraud that precipitated the financial crisis.

Last week, the House Subcommittee on Capital Markets, Securities, and Investment doubled down on this destruction by going after state protections against the kind of widespread fraud that could crush many Americans’ plans for retirement. The subcommittee considered H.R. 5037, which would block private enforcement of state protections against securities fraud and even restrict a state’s ability to defend its own citizens in enforcement actions.

The bill’s broad language is designed to preempt any state law that even tangentially touches on securities fraud. The North American Securities Administrators Association (NASAA), the oldest international organization devoted to investor protection, calls H.R. 5037 an “attempt to tie the hands of the regulators who are the ‘cops on the beat’ and the closest to Main Street investors in favor of large companies engaged in or suspected of securities fraud.” NASAA’s opposition letter goes on to decry these policies as “overwhelmingly against the interests of all law-abiding market participants” – impassioned emphasis theirs.

H.R. 5037 is plainly a “get out of jail free” card for white-collar criminals — who so rarely see the inside of a jail cell as it is. For more than a century, states have been free to regulate securities that have real and sometimes devastating impacts on their residents. Clayton himself remarked in a recent speech, “state … regulators play a critical role in protecting Main Street investors.”

Trump attacks 'abolish ICE' movement on the morning of massive nationwide protest

Trump — who routinely attacks the military, veterans, and their families — tweets that ICE is "great!"

ADAM PECK JUN 30, 2018, 12:21 PM

For months, activists have been calling for the dissolution of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the government agency now responsible for carrying out the Trump administration’s racist “zero tolerance” immigration policy.

The proposal was largely confined to the most progressive wings of the Democratic Party until the last two weeks, when Donald Trump’s efforts to kidnap immigrant children from their homes and their parents and place them in makeshift prison camps came to light. Since then, calls to abolish ICE have grown from a whisper to a shout.

Several progressive Democratic candidates have made the abolishment of ICE a central platform of their campaigns, and a handful of incumbent Democrats have taken up the mantle as well.

-snip-

It’s unclear in what fever dream Trump witnessed ICE’s liberation of town after town from the clutches of MS-13, but ICE’s competency is not in dispute: they have none.

An Inspector General’s report published this week by the Department of Homeland Security, the federal agency in which ICE is housed, found that ICE does an inadequate job of inspecting and maintaining its facilities, and fails to correct poor practices.

Presumably, those lamentable practices include incidents like one in Kansas City, Missouri, where an ICE agent assaulted an immigration lawyer who was reuniting a child kidnapped by the Trump administration with her mother. The lawyer sustained a broken foot and several cuts...........................

Michigan okays 'polluter panels' in blow to environmental efforts across the state

Activists slammed the move, which comes as Flint's water crisis continues.

E.A. CRUNDEN JUN 30, 2018, 1:38 PM

Environmental activists are slamming two controversial bills signed into law Friday by Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder (R), arguing that they will give polluting companies the ability to undermine state environmental guidelines.

The two bills signed by Snyder will allow for oversight of the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ), which is meant to serve as a watchdog for environmental issues throughout the state.

One law establishes an Environmental Rules Review Committee staffed by governor-appointed voting members representing various sectors including waste management, manufacturing, fossil fuel companies, and agriculture. The committee will oversee the DEQ’s process for establishing rules and presumably wield considerable control over how such efforts proceed.

The second law creates the Environmental Permit Review Commission, which will advise on permits and other applications, to be housed within the DEQ. Both laws have been dubbed “polluter panels” bills based on the leeway they give to industries known for poor environmental practices.

Resignation of Republican regulator who didn't tow the party line surprises energy world

Environmental groups aren't shedding many tears, though.

MARK HAND JUN 29, 2018, 1:06 PM

A Trump-appointed energy regulator who led the charge against the president’s plan to prop up financially struggling coal and nuclear plants announced late Thursday that he is leaving the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to take over as head of the nation’s top trade association for private water utilities.

Powelson will be leaving FERC in mid-August, only one year after the Senate confirmed him to be a commissioner. He will then become president and CEO of the National Association of Water Companies (NAWC), a trade association that is pushing for privatization of the nation’s water systems.

A Republican commissioner from the Philadelphia area, Powelson was nominated by President Trump in May 2017 and sworn in as commissioner on August 10. His replacement at FERC — who will need to be nominated by Trump and confirmed by the Senate — will serve the rest of his term, which expires on June 30, 2020.

His departure leaves more of an opportunity for the commission to be split 2-2 on certain issues, such as gas pipeline approvals or Trump administration proposals to help coal and nuclear generation. Powelson rallied his fellow Republicans on the commission — Chairman Kevin McIntyre and Commissioner Neil Chatterjee — to join him in opposing Energy Secretary Rick Perry’s proposal to bail out coal.

Trump's top economics adviser lies about 'rapidly' falling budget deficit

There's just one problem.

RYAN KORONOWSKI JUN 29, 2018, 9:33 AM

Larry Kudlow, the director of the National Economic Council, said that the deficit is “coming down rapidly” in a Friday morning appearance on Fox Business.

The problem for President Trump’s top economic adviser is that the deficit is actually rising.

“As the economy gears up, more people working, better jobs and careers, those revenues come rolling in and the deficit, which was one of the other criticisms, is coming down,” Kudlow told host Maria Bartiromo. “It’s coming down rapidly. Growth solves a lot of problems.”

However, the deficit is actually increasing, and is projected to do so well into the future. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) projected as of April 2018 that the FY 2018 deficit is $804 billion. Fiscal Year 2017’s deficit was $666 billion, increasing from $586 billion in FY 2016. This leads to an even worse projection for the federal debt. The CBO concluded in a report earlier this week: “At 78 percent of gross domestic product (GDP), federal debt held by the public is now at its highest level since shortly after World War II.”
