Isles' Lehner thrives after confronting mental health issues

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. (AP) — A sign hangs above the door between the locker room and the ice at the New York Islanders’ practice facility that reads, “GET BETTER TODAY.”
It carries a powerful double meaning for Robin Lehner, who before the season disclosed his struggles with mental illness and is now a finalist for the Vezina Trophy as the NHL’s top goaltender. He was a huge reason the Islanders returned to the playoffs after a two-year absence.
“It’s been a fun year,” Lehner said. “I feel like I’m playing good. ... Obviously I made some changes. Yeah, it’s clicking.”
It’s finally clicking in every possible way for Lehner, who has figured out how to manage a bipolar disorder and thrive on and off the ice. The 27-year-old Swede set a career high with 25 victories, posted a 2.13 goals-against average and .930 save percentage and, in tandem with Thomas Greiss, helped New York go from worst to first in the league in goals allowed.

A quickly-recanted sexual assault allegation against a Democratic presidential candidate was reportedly the latest work of two notorious far-right operatives — Jacob Wohl and lobbyist Jack Burkman. For Burkman, this is the latest in a long series of scandals for a man who once served as counsel to a prominent Republican congressman and as a lobbyist for prominent government affairs firms.
On Monday afternoon, a tweet and blog post on Medium written by someone assuming the identity of a 21-year-old gay man began circulating on far-right websites. With no details, the post alleged a February 2019 sexual assault by the openly gay mayor of South Bend, Indiana, Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg. By Monday evening, the accuser had recanted the claim.
Later on Monday night, the Daily Beast reported that Burkman and Wohl had been behind an effort to get young men to falsely accuse Buttigieg, in hopes of weakening a candidate they saw as a threat to President Donald Trump’s re-election prospects. The news site obtained an audio recording in which the two apparently attempted to enlist a different person to make similar false accusations.
Burkman has experienced a stunning descent into the political gutter. In the 1990s, he served as legislative counsel to Rep. Rick Lazio (R-NY), before joining the Smith-Free Group as a lobbyist. He later joined Holland & Knight, one of the most prominent law and lobbying firms in Washington, D.C., before starting his own firm. His lobbying clients over the years have included the City of St. Louis, Fidelity National Financial, and the Family Research Council. He also appeared as a conservative pundit on Fox News and other networks and served as a Bush-Cheney 2004 campaign surrogate.

Rep. Greg Walden (R-OH), who chaired the powerful House Committee on Energy and Commerce until the 2018 blue wave cost his party its control of Congress, went on Fox News Tuesday to denounce Medicare for All and other proposals to create a single-payer system for health care. Asked about his party’s lack of an alternative, he suggested that they would have had one had they kept their majority.
Walden has been in Congress for just over 20 years. His party held the majority for 16 of them. Since 2011, they spent much of their time pushing to “repeal and replace” the Affordable Care Act, although most of their more than 50 attempts to kill the bill (in whole or part) were more focused on the “repeal” and less on the “replace.” In May of 2017, Walden voted for the wildly unpopular Trumpcare proposal, which would have taken health insurance away from an estimated 14 million people.
Walden said on Tuesday that the single-payer proposals were a “complete government takeover” of the health care system and would turn the United States into Venezuela. Citing a single example of a Canadian woman who had a long wait for a cancer diagnosis under that country’s system, he predicted “If you think it’s fun to wait in line at DMV, you’ll gonna love [Sen.] Bernie Sanders’ [(I-VT)] wait times for Medicare for All.”
But pressed by Fox News to explain what his party’s solution was, Walden claimed that they would have tamed the nation’s growing health care costs had they only kept control of the House.

There’s no excuse for people to be ignorant of the struggle of countless Americans, including children and the elderly. That said, there is especially no excuse for a politician to plead ignorance. Or worse, to be so out of touch that they’re actually offensive.
Congressman Jim Hagedorn, a Republican from Minnesota, declared in a speech at the Noon Kiwanis Club in the town of Worthington, Minnesota, that “Nobody [in America] goes to sleep at night wondering if they’ll be able to feed their families.” Yes, he really said that. When I first read the quote, I thought it had to be fake—but somehow, it isn’t. An elected official really did say that no one goes to sleep worrying about feeding their families … while people are routinely, chronically unable to feed their families and themselves. Far fewer can access food that is nutritionally sound.
Hagedorn serves a district that covers all of southern Minnesota. Notably, it’s also the second-largest producer of pork in the entire country. Hagedorn himself was raised on a livestock farm.

Special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation, which concluded in March, raised many questions about what is and isn’t appropriate when it comes to interactions between presidential campaigns and foreign entities. And a March visit to Romania by Brad Parscale, manager for President Donald Trump’s 2020 reelection campaign, is being scrutinized by legal experts in a Washington Post report by Michael Birnbaum and Ioana Burtea.
In Romania, Parscale delivered a paid speech to Romanian politicians and policy experts. Doing so, according to the Post’s report, is perfectly legal as long as Parscale does not do any lobbying in the U.S. on behalf of foreign clients without registering. But the political figures the Post interviewed expressed different views on how advisable it is or isn’t for a presidential campaign manager to be accepting money from foreign entities.
Richard Painter, who served as an ethics lawyer for President George W. Bush, was critical of Parscale’s actions, telling the Post, “The appearances are terrible. You would certainly think that a campaign manager would not take money from foreign nationals in this political environment.”
Kayleigh McEnany, a spokesperson for Trump’s campaign, told the Post that Parscale’s speech in Romania was fine because he was doing so “as a private citizen” and “followed the Trump campaign’s approval process governing invitations for outside speaking engagements.” But Republican political strategist John Weaver, who worked on the presidential campaigns of George H.W. Bush and Sen. John McCain, was critical of Parscale’s speech in Romania and told the Post, “I’ve never heard of anything like this before. There are too many opportunities where there could be potential conflicts between a presidential campaign and the policies that the candidate could espouse and potential income. It is a conflict-of-interest zone that you just never enter into.”

Job recruiting company Cynet Systems is in hot water after a job posting went viral, but not for a good reason.
A LinkedIn job posting asked for a “mid-senior level business development” person, but under the position’s top qualification they listed “preferably caucasian,” WUSA wrote.
Cynet Systems is one of Virginia’s most popular companies but now they’re being asked about racial discrimination in job practices.
It’s unknown if Cynet Systems was hiring for their own company or someone else, but the person who made the job posting has since been fired and the company apologized.
