Claims Law Blocking How Much He Can Be Reimbursed From Donor Funds Is Violating His First Amendment Rights
U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) is comparing himself to the woman known as “the first lady of civil rights,” and “the mother of the freedom movement,” Rosa Parks. Parks famously refused to follow the law, engaging in civil disobedience by refusing to give up her seat to a white passenger.
The far right wing Senator from Texas is suing the Federal Election Commission (FEC), claiming a bipartisan law controlling how candidates are allowed to reimburse themselves from donor funds threatens his First Amendment right to speech.
He claims in a court filing it is like telling “Rosa Parks [to sit] in the back of the bus.”
Cruz, as Buzzfeed reported in April, “is suing to get rid of limits on how much he can reimburse himself for his campaign against Beto O’Rourke.” Cruz loaned his own campaign $260,000, but legally can only repay himself $250,000. He wants the remaining $10,000.

Gov. Rick Snyder (R-MI) has become synonymous with disaster and neglect. He presided over the Flint water crisis, endangered thousands of people, and is the subject of an ongoing criminal investigation. But none of this deterred Harvard’s Kennedy School from announcing he would be granted a year-long paid fellowship, with Taubman Center for State and Local Government director Jeffrey Liebman touting his “expertise in management, public policy, and promoting civility.”
It is this last supposed skill of Snyder’s — “promoting civility” — that drew scorn from New York Magazine’s Zak Cheney-Rice.
“Snyder was responsible for appointing the head of Michigan’s Department of Environmental Quality, who ensures water safety statewide, and the emergency manager who oversaw the city when Flint’s water source was switched in 2014,” write Cheney-Rice. “The former governor also appears to have lied about when he first became aware that Flint’s water was unsafe. His administration did not implement emergency procedures until months after they knew about the crisis, while officials continued to insist that the water was safe despite its foul odor, rust color, and the fact that it was causing hair loss and rashes in people who bathed in it.”
Apparently, none of this is matters because Snyder firmly believes in people with differing political views getting along.

Poor conditions including overcrowding, flu outbreaks, and a lack of clean clothes are just par for the course at an El Paso border station, according to a report released Monday by the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Office of Inspector General. In the report, border patrol argues that these conditions are necessary to stem the flow of migrants to the United States.
The report, first obtained by NBC News, detailed the conditions during a May 7 tour of a border station in the El Paso sector and found that only four showers were available for 756 immigrants. Additionally, over half of the immigrants were being held outside in the Texas heat, while the immigrants inside were being kept in cells at over five times their capacity. One cell meant for a maximum of 35 people held 155 adult males with only one toilet and sink. The cell was so overcrowded that the internal temperatures reached over 80 degrees and the men were unable to lay down to sleep.
While border patrol processing centers are only meant for temporary stays of up to 36 hours, some migrants at this facility in El Paso reported stays of over 30 days.
“With limited access to showers and clean clothing, detainees were wearing soiled clothing for days or weeks,” the report said.

President Trump has asked the Pentagon to marshal a broadening array of military hardware, including tanks and fighter jets, to showcase his planned Fourth of July address to the nation — dramatically escalating the gathering’s cost and sparked concerns about the potentially damaging impact on the Mall and other infrastructure.
Trump, who had already ordered up a flyover by military aircraft including Air Force One and the Navy’s Blue Angels, has pressed to expand his “Salute to America” event further with an F-35 stealth fighter and the involvement of Marine Helicopter Squadron One, which flies the presidential helicopter, according to government officials who requested anonymity to speak frankly. He also pushed to bring military tanks to the site of his planned speech at the Lincoln Memorial, prompting National Park Service officials to warn that such a deployment could damage the site, these individuals said.
Trump told reporters late Monday that “we’re going to have some tanks stationed outside,” following a report about the emerging plans by The Washington Post. He cast the spectacle as part of a July Fourth “like no other. It’ll be special.”

He whined about how much he has to spend on lawyers.
Trump attacked the entire state of New York on Monday because he and his family face multiple investigations there for a range of potential illegal activities.
In a series of three tweets sent in the early afternoon, Trump whined about his corrupt foundation, the cost of living in New York, and how much money his family has to spend on lawyers because of the many investigations into their alleged wrongdoing:
"It is very hard and expensive to live in New York. Governor Andrew Cuomo uses his Attorney General as a bludgeoning tool for his own purposes. They sue on everything, always in search of a crime, I even got sued on a Foundation which took Zero rent & expenses & gave away more money than it had. ... Now Cuomo's A.G. is harassing all of my New York businesses in search of anything at all they can find to make me look as bad as possible. So, on top of ridiculously high taxes, my children and companies are spending a fortune on lawyers. No wonder people and businesses are fleeing New York in record numbers!"
Trump, his family, and his businesses are facing legal trouble from the state of New York on multiple fronts.
At the end of 2018, Trump was forced to shutter his namesake foundation after prosecutors alleged "repeated and willful" acts of corruption. New York's attorney general filed a lawsuit last year accusing Trump and three of his adult children (Eric, Don Jr., and Ivanka) of engaging in "persistently illegal conduct" while running the foundation and seeking $2.8 million in restitution.

The law will allow GOP lawmakers who control the 2020 redistricting process to hide their communications.
Texas Republicans passed a law that will allow state lawmakers to keep any communications they have about lawmaking secret — a move transparency advocates warn will allow GOP politicians in charge of redrawing legislative and congressional district maps to avoid charges of illegal gerrymandering, the Dallas Morning News reported.
The new Republican-crafted law, which went into effect earlier this month, allows lawmakers in the state to hide any communications that pertain to "a legislative activity or function," according to the Dallas Morning News.
It's a law that Texas attorney Joe Larsen, who sits on the board of the Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas, said is a "power grab," the Dallas Morning News reported.
The law will "completely allow the legislators to control the message, keep anyone from looking behind the curtain," Larsen told the Dallas Morning News.

Labour-supporting Momentum launches campaign to oust UK PM frontrunner Johnson

LONDON (Reuters) - A group set up to support British opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, has launched a campaign to try to oust Boris Johnson, the frontrunner to become the next prime minister, from his parliamentary seat, it said on Monday.
Momentum, created just weeks after Corbyn’s surprise appointment as leader of the Labour Party in 2015, said it would send hundreds of their supporters to Johnson’s electoral district in west London later this month to “unseat” him.
Johnson holds a small majority in his constituency of just 5,034 votes, making him vulnerable to other parties keen to unseat him in a new national election, which, while not being due until 2022, might be held earlier to try to break the deadlock over Britain’s departure from the European Union.
“Now we’re launching a campaign to make sure Johnson goes down in history as the first sitting prime minister to lose his seat,” said Becky Boumelha, a member of Momentum’s National Coordinating Group.

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Hong Kong protesters stormed the Legislative Council on the anniversary of the former British colony’s 1997 return to Chinese rule on Monday amid widespread anger over laws that would allow extraditions to China.
A small group of mostly students wearing hard hats and masks used a metal trolley, poles and pieces of scaffolding to charge again and again at the compound’s reinforced glass, which finally gave.
Some protesters broke into the building but it was unclear how many were still inside. The council, Hong Kong’s mini-parliament, issued a red alert, ordering the protesters to leave immediately.
It did not say what would happen if they didn’t.
