How Bloomberg Trashed Public Education in New York

This article is from Feb 24, 2020

I’m an art teacher. Mike’s policies gutted my school. During those years, I was lucky to have enough copy paper for my students to draw on.

February 24, 2020

Mike Bloomberg, the former mayor of New York City now running for President, often brags about being one of the most prolific charter school creators in the United States. Bloomberg says he “absolutely” intends to expand charters in his federal education plan. This is a serious threat to public education, especially given Bloomberg’s history of using his fortune to shape policy.

Since 2013, Bloomberg has been one of the nation’s biggest donors to candidates and ballot initiatives promoting charters and vouchers, giving more than $4 million to candidates in New Jersey, Colorado, Minnesota, and Louisiana, often through “dark money” PACs. In California, Bloomberg spent a whopping $39 million, backing both Democrats and Republicans who support charters. In Pennsylvania, he gave $6 million to pro-charter incumbent Republican Sen. Pat Toomey, who won re-election with a narrow 1.5 percent edge, and ended up casting a critical vote for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

New York City teachers are vocal critics of Bloomberg, who not only used public money for school privatization but usurped the power of elected community school boards as the state granted Bloomberg “mayoral control” of New York City schools in 2002.

Bloomberg proceeded to appoint corporate attorney Joel Klein as head of New York City’s education department. Klein began a "test-and-punish" regime, which led to the closure of 150 schools and earned him an 80 percent disapproval rating with teachers.

The Disappearing Songs of Hawaii's Endangered Native Birds

New research finds that different species of honeycreepers are singing the same songs. What does that mean for survival?

DANIELLE BEURTEAUX

This piece was originally published in Undark and appears here as part of our Climate Desk Partnership.

The sounds of Kauai’s forests are changing. Thirty years ago, David Kuhn could hear a dawn chorus and identify the many different birds that lived on the Hawaiian island. But more recently, Kuhn, a wildlife recordist based on Kauai, began noticing that not only are the forests becoming quieter, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to tell the remaining birds apart by their songs.

Investigating further, in 2014 he recorded a native honeycreeper, an akekee, singing the songs of other endangered honeycreeper species. “That confirmed my confusion up to that point,” says Kuhn. “I thought, what the heck, these guys are starting to sound alike.”

Kuhn’s discovery prompted research into the plight of three of Kauai’s six remaining honeycreeper species: the anianiau, the Kauai amakihi, and the akekee. His hunch was correct—the three species now sing much more similar songs, with less complex vocal signals, due to the decreasing size of their populations, especially among mature birds that pass on song repertoires to younger offspring. It’s the first time this type of behavior among endangered birds has been recorded, says Kristina Paxton, lead author of a paper on honeycreepers published last year in the journal Royal Society Open Science, and a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Biology at the University of Hawaii at Hilo.

Virus spreads to over 60 countries; France closes the Louvre

By JOHN LEICESTER and COLLEEN BARRY

PARIS (AP) — Coronavirus cases surged in Italy, and France closed the world-famous Louvre Museum on Sunday as the deadly outbreak that began in China sent fear rising across Western Europe, threatening its tourism industry.

The number of countries hit by the virus climbed past 60, and the death toll worldwide reached at least 3,000.

New fronts in the battle opened rapidly over the weekend, deepening the sense of crisis that has already sent financial markets plummeting, emptied the streets in many cities and rewritten the routines of millions of people. More than 88,000 around the globe have been infected, with the virus popping up on every continent but Antarctica.

Australia and Thailand reported their first deaths Sunday, while the Dominican Republic and the Czech Republic recorded their first infections.

Italian authorities announced that the number of people infected in the country soared 50% to 1,694 in just 24 hours, and five more had died, bringing the death toll there to 34. France raised its number of reported cases to 130, an increase of 30 from the day before, and said it has seen two deaths.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - American Airlines Group Inc (AAL.O) said on Sunday it was waiving change fees on all newly purchased tickets amid declining air travel demand because of the new coronavirus outbreak.

The largest U.S. airline said it would waive change fees up to 14 days before travel for customers who purchase tickets between Sunday and March 16.

JetBlue Airways Corp (JBLU.O) said last week it would suspend change and cancellation fees for new flight bookings between Feb. 27 and March 11.

American Airlines shares have fallen 37% since Feb. 13.

On Friday, United canceled its investor day that was set for March 5, saying it is not “practical to expect that it can have a productive conversation focused on its long-term strategy next week.” It will reschedule for September.

Chicago-based United already withdrew its 2020 guidance last week because of the uncertainty over the duration and spread of the virus. It warned that near-term demand to China has almost disappeared, with demand for the rest of its trans-Pacific routes down by 75%.

U.S. stock futures resume coronavirus rout as trading resumes

Source: Reuters

BUSINESS NEWS MARCH 1, 2020 / 6:28 PM / UPDATED 21 MINUTES AGO

(Reuters) - U.S. stock index futures tumbled when trading reopened on Sunday night with investors still unnerved by coronavirus and taking little solace from weekend comments by U.S. officials that aimed to soothe panic about a pandemic.

Senior officials in President Donald Trump’s administration on Sunday tried to reduce concern about a global recession, saying the U.S. public had over-reacted and that stocks would rebound due to the American economy’s underlying strength.

S&P 500 e-mini futures ESc1 were down 1.6%, indicating a another bad day for the benchmark index on Monday after it fell more than 11% last week, its worst since the 2008 financial crisis.

Here are the top 4 Trump appointees who have no business being on the coronavirus task force

Published 2 mins ago on March 1, 2020
By Sarah K. Burris

President Donald Trump is desperately trying to solve the coronavirus crisis so the stock market will stop falling. His greatest barrier, however, is himself. According to Trump’s favorite polling agency, Rasmussen Reports, the day after Trump took to the podium to reassure the nation, not only did it not work, his poll numbers dropped.

So, the president announced a task force to handle the crisis, pawning Vice President Mike Pence off on fixing everything. One of the worst problems with the group, however, is that the day after Trump appointed Pence to create the task force, the majority of them abandoned their responsibilities to play politics at CPAC.

Here are those members who have no reason to be on the task force to help anyone, much less coronavirus.

Abortion rights face stern new test at conservative U.S. Supreme Court

Source: Reuters

SUPREME COURT MARCH 1, 2020 / 6:16 AM / UPDATED 23 MINUTES AGO

Lawrence Hurley
6 MIN READ

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court this week gets its first chance to consider new curbs on abortion rights with President Donald Trump’s two conservative appointees on the bench as it examines the legality of a Louisiana law that could force two of the state’s three clinics that perform the procedure to shut down.

The court, with a 5-4 conservative majority, is scheduled on Wednesday to hear arguments in an appeal by Shreveport-based abortion provider Hope Medical Group for Women seeking to invalidate the law. Chief Justice John Roberts may be pivotal in deciding the outcome, with Trump’s appointees Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch also in the spotlight.

The clinic sued to block the 2014 law, which requires that doctors who perform abortions have a difficult-to-obtain arrangement called “admitting privileges” at a hospital within 30 miles (48 km) of the abortion clinic. A federal appeals court ruled against the clinic and upheld the law.

The Supreme Court struck down a similar Texas requirement in 2016 when conservative Justice Anthony Kennedy, who retired in 2018, joined the four liberal justices to defend abortion rights. Trump has tightened the conservative grip on the court with his 2018 appointment of Kavanaugh, who replaced Kennedy, and his 2017 appointment of Gorsuch.

Internet jumps on Trump for ignoring coronavirus crisis to plug restaurant he saw on Fox News

Published 1 min ago on March 1, 2020
By Tom Boggioni

While most of the country is anxiously watching frightening reports on the coronavirus pandemic spreading across the country, Donald Trump took time out to use his Twitter megaphone to plug a Mexican restaurant in Arizona that has come under attack because the owners are supporters of his.

Reacting to a report on “Fox & Friends” — of course — about the owners of Sammy’s Mexican Grill being hammered for their support of the president, Trump tweeted, “The food is GREAT at Sammy’s Mexican Grill in Phoenix, Arizona. Congratulations to Betty & Jorge Rivas on doing such a wonderful job. I will try hard to stop by the next time I am in Phoenix. Support Sammy’s!”

Commenters were quick to remind the president that maybe he should be spending more time dealing with the plunging stock market and a deadly virus that appears to be sweeping across the country than tweeting a restaurant review.

HHS secretary rebukes Trump plan to close southern border: 'Not one of the highest priorities'

Source: Raw Story

By David Edwards

Health and Human Service Secretary Alex Azar threw cold water on President Donald Trump’s proposal to close the Mexico border as a measure against the coronavirus.

In an interview on CBS News, host Margaret Brennan asked Azar about the president’s statement that he’s “strongly considering” a closure of the southern border.

“That’s not one of the highest priority areas,” Azar admitted. “Mexico only has a couple of cases.”

“What the president is making clear, though, is we’ll always be looking at travel restrictions, border protections,” he continued. “We will take whatever measures are appropriate and necessary to protext the American people.”
