Maine Ballot Question 2: Expand Medicaid Eligibility

Source: The New York Times

Voters in Maine will decide on Tuesday whether to expand access to Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act, making the state the first in the nation to settle the issue by referendum.

Maine is one of 19 states whose Republican governors or legislatures have refused to expand Medicaid under Obamacare. Other holdouts like Utah and Idaho are closely watching the initiative, as newly formed committees in both those states are working to get a Medicaid expansion question on next year’s ballot. The outcome may offer clues about the salience of the issue in next year’s midterm congressional elections.

Mueller likely to probe Gates moonlighting as movie producer

By Ben Wieder And Peter Stone
November 07, 2017 3:00 AM

Less well known is his (Gates') sideline as a Hollywood producer. Gates has been involved in a handful of films, including this year’s Walk of Fame, which starred Clint Eastwood’s son Scott.

Some of Gates’ colleagues in those Tinseltown endeavors, however, have run into trouble with the law. Gates — who, with Manafort, was charged with money laundering and failing to disclose foreign banks accounts in the first public indictments to emerge from Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe — was listed as providing backing for several films whose other producers have been accused of defrauding investors of millions of dollars.

One of the two producers he worked with, James David Williams, pleaded guilty last month in federal court to fraud, identity theft and money laundering in connection with a scheme — laid out in a related civil case — in which he and his co-defendants allegedly kept millions of dollars they told investors was destined for films that would star Nicholas Cage and Harry Connick Jr., among others.

Forbes says Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross lied about being a billionaire

Source: CNBC

Turns out Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross may have greatly exaggerated his wealth, according to a report from Forbes.

Just a year ago, Forbes listed Ross' net worth at $2.9 billion and included him in the Forbes 400 list of the richest Americans by net worth. The new report says Ross had just under $700 million in assets. It cited financial-disclosure forms filed by Ross after being nominated for his Commerce secretary.

After Forbes learned about this, the magazine said, it wanted to remove Ross from the Forbes 400. Ross protested, according to the report, telling the magazine it wasn't taking into account some trusts created for his family, which add "more than $2 billion" to his net worth and which he did not have to disclose in federal filings.

But the magazine said that after "one month of digging," it is confident that the more than $2 billion never existed. It said it removed him when it updated its list of richest Americans last month.

What's noteworthy isn't the fact that he's not a billionaire but that he feels the need to lie about it.

Birds of a feather...

The Latest: Judge may lift Manafort, Gates home confinement

Source: AP

A federal judge says she's inclined to remove from house arrest the former chairman of President Donald Trump's campaign and his business associate.

But U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson did not immediately rule at Monday's court session, saying she needs more financial information from Paul Manafort and Rick Gates.

The men are accused of laundering the profits of foreign consulting work performed on behalf of a Ukrainian political party and concealing those assets from the U.S. government. They have pleaded not guilty.

Jackson says that once she receives the additional financial information she is prepared to lift the home confinement requirement but with certain restrictions, such as a bar on international travel.

Bob Corker: Trump's Call to Investigate Democrats 'Undermines Our Justice System'

Source: Time

Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker criticized President Trump for urging the U.S. Department of Justice to go after Democrats, saying it “erodes the American people’s confidence in our institutions.”

“Like me, most Americans hope that our justice system is independent and free of political interference,” Corker said in a statement Friday. “President Trump’s pressuring of the Justice Department and FBI to pursue cases against his adversaries and calling for punishment before trials take place are totally inappropriate and not only undermine our justice system but erode the American people’s confidence in our institutions.”
