Senator Boxer: Confronting Terrorism Without Another American Ground War

Sen. Boxer says NO to Obama’s AUMF. "At best, this language is vague, At worst, it is a dangerous loophole”

President Obama is absolutely correct that our nation must confront these ruthless terrorists. But he was also correct to promise that America would not be sending U.S. combat troops back to the Middle East to fight another ground war.

This is the commitment the President made last June when he said, "I think we always have to guard against mission creep, so let me repeat what I've said in the past: American combat troops are not going to be fighting in Iraq again." He made the same point again during his State of the Union Address last month when he stated, "Instead of getting dragged into another ground war in the Middle East, we are leading a broad coalition, including Arab nations, to degrade and ultimately destroy this terrorist group."

That is why I was so surprised by the Administration's draft AUMF which would allow this Administration and the next one broad discretion to commit American troops in the fight against ISIL. The only limitation is no "enduring offensive ground combat operations."

Why is there no music forum on DU ??

Why is there no music forum on DU ??

Perhaps because we would spend all our time there?

Please add 1000 videos, links or whatever to this thread.

I want us all to feel human by song and dance, even when Republicans control the House and Senate.

We are still human, still love music and dance. From 7 months to 107 years or more, we are human.

Share your best or favorite videos here........links, or how you were part of the performance.

Don't you think we need something other than politics to talk about and just be friends here?

I think so. Agree?

I will post a few dozen links to videos later, but want to know what others here want to share first.

One problem us Atheists and Agnostics and Skeptics have: MUSIC

There's some damn good music that those religious folks put out there over the last 1000 years.

And it invades even the shopping centers we visit, or some of us visit.

Like this one in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada

Abba's House Flash Mob at Hamilton Place

Kind of have to admit, it was nice music.....and this is not the first time Ontario Canada was invaded by great music before their thing they call Christmas.

There was this little civil event a couple years earlier..perhaps you remember.

Christmas Food Court Flash Mob, Hallelujah Chorus

Music is the way those religious people take over.. I swear......nothing more convincing than music to make you want to believe in fantasy stuff...because, well, their music is nice!!!

From Jenner to Wakefield: The long shadow of the anti-vaccination movement

WARNING: Video, although thoroughly informational and reliably accurate, contains images of humans afflicted with Smallpox, and other illnesses.

In 1998 a medical furore broke out when The Lancet published an article by Andrew Wakefield questioning the benefits of the MMR vaccination which was being given unquestioningly to children throughout the UK. Coming 202 years after the first vaccination by Edward Jenner, which led to the eradication of smallpox throughout the world, this recent incident is only the latest in a long history of questioning the benefits of vaccination.

From early irrational fears born of outdated medical understanding through to the latest medical research and findings, Professor Gareth Williams traces the history of the anti-vaccination movement and its long tail, reviewing the social settings in which the fears were found and offering a balanced assessment of vaccination as we find it today.

The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the on the Gresham College website:

NASA Launches Soil Moisture Mapper video

Published on Jan 31, 2015
Highlights from launch, separation and solar array deployment of the SMAP spacecraft. SMAP launched on a Delta II rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base, Ca., on January 31, 2015. SMAP will provide high resolution, space-based measurements of soil moisture and its state -- frozen or thawed -- a new capability that will allow scientists to better predict natural hazards of extreme weather, climate change, floods and droughts, and help reduce uncertainties in our understanding of Earth's water, energy and carbon cycles.

Who among us heard about this event in the news in the last week? Too much news about football and snowstorms andRomney quitting politics?

"My Flavor of Atheism" a video

Published on Jan 30, 2015
When one considers the scribblings of the ancients and places that against a background of the cosmos, the contrast is stark. Read a holy book, and then study the universe- you will see that the structure and behaviors of nature are not the modus operandi of the gods. What is written about the divine is better suited to a background of primitive and barbaric nations than it is to a background of mathematical harmony.
Your gods, like the people who invented them, is primitive, brash, and unrefined.
My god, if it exists, is at least as sophisticated as the universe that it created.
(To be clear, I don’t have a belief in the latter deistic entity, but I would have little objection to adopting one should the evidence be forthcoming.)

Also, I should point out that I took some poetic liberties toward the end of this video. They were heavily inspired by quotes from Dr. Manhattan (Watchmen) and Matt Smith’s Doctor (Doctor Who.)
Finally, the mood of this whole video was inspired by the following quote:
"Suppose there was an intelligence, vast and unknowable. Suppose it lit the big bang, suppose it wrote the laws of physics, and has been subtly molding the universe for 14 billion years. Now keep a straight face and tell me that it cares where you stick your dick." -Prof. Dr. Michio Kaku

Is there a subsection here to talk about quality video blogs?

Within the last 5 years, roughly, camera memory has increased 10-20 fold, allowing for longer high quality video shots, not just still photography.

I am sure most people here enjoy the still photography more than the busy nature of video, yet video and advanced video editing tools now enable several minutes of motion picture quality entertainment available for the common person, not just some Hollywood studio.

As we approach and begin becoming consumers of 4K photos and video, is there a space for sharing this on DU? (Or perhaps, there already is, and I have simply not found it yet.)

Youtube, and other popular video sites are now starting to post 4K videos. With proper equipment, folks can view these presentations, largely from unknowns from around the globe, on their large screen TV's, capture them on their computers, save them, re-view them as if they were part of a personal photo library.

Is this an area taht a photography discussion and sharing area on DU should focus upon? Or are we folks who want to simply have a haven for still photography?

Comments, positive or negative, and suggestions or info on other links to what I have in mind, most welcome to this question.

As a example of what I have in mind, I'm including a link to a Youtube video, just as a sample of what I have in mind, not pushing this guy's video, just showing what younger folks are now doing with their digital SLR cameras.

Anyone in or around Massachusetts following Hernandez trial?

Anyone care?

Anyone want to discuss it? (Perhaps there is another location other than this forum/group to discuss it?)

If not, I'll look elsewhere for discussion, but I thought DU members might have some astute observations.

Sort of ironic the trial started the week between deflation-gate and the Super Bowl, I think.
