German unemployment hits 24-year low, lowest level since west and east Germany reunited in 1990

The Business Times:

30 Apr4:15 PM

[FRANKFURT] German unemployment fell in April to the lowest level in 24 years as the recovery in Europe's biggest economy continues to pick up speed, data showed on Thursday.

The number of people registered as unemployed in Germany fell by a seasonally-adjusted 8,000 to 2.792 million, the Federal Labour Office said.

That was slightly fewer than expected, as analysts had been pencilling in a decline of around 10,000.

The unemployment rate - which measures the jobless total against the working population as a whole - stood at 6.4 per cent in April, unchanged from March and the lowest level since west and east Germany reunited in 1990 after the fall of the Berlin Wall the previous year.

Thousands Across The State Of Michigan Wrongly Disqualified From Benefits

Source: 9 & 10 News

Thousands of people in Michigan were wrongly denied food assistance. Monday, the state began sending notices to people who were wrongly denied benefits.

According to the Department of Health and Human Services, people were disqualified from receiving public assistance for a “criminal justice disqualification,” or because they were wanted on felony warrants.

“Since January 2013. There are approximately 15,000 people who were illegally cut off of benefits.”

If you received a notice in the past two years saying you're cut off from food assistance because of a "criminal justice disqualification," you may be eligible to receive all the benefits you missed. Other affected assistance forms include cash assistance through the Family Independence Program, State Disability Assistance and Child Day Care.

“The notices just said essentially you're disqualified because of the criminal justice disqualification, not telling people who in the household,” American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) West Michigan Attorney Miriam Aukerman said. “Is it mom is it dad older brother, not saying where the criminal disqualification came from.”
