'The Strike Wave Is in Full Swing': Amazon, Whole Foods Workers Walk Off Job to Protest Unjust and Unsafe Labor Practices

From the article:

Labor rights advocates on Monday urged the public to show support and solidarity with Amazon employees who walked off the job at a Staten Island warehouse following what the workers said was an unacceptable response by the company to at least one case of coronavirus at the facility.

Between 50 and 200 employees at the warehouse, known as JFK8, walked off the job around 12:30 pm Monday, days after at least one case of coronavirus was reported at the facility. Christian Smalls, an employee who is organizing the strike, told CNN the number of employees who have tested positive for the coronavirus, officially known as COVID-19, is actually between five and seven, though the company has only acknowledged one infection....

"The richest man in the world can't even provide basic protection for his workers during this pandemic crisis because it hurts his bottom line," tweeted New York Assembly member Ron T. Kim of Amazon's multi-billionaire CEO, Jeff Bezos. "I stand in solidarity with Amazon workers."

When I listen to Trump, my blood pressure rises as my IQ falls. So I rarely listen to him.

But each time that I do, his ignorance, incoherence, inanity, insanity, intolerance, and his idiocy is completely and unavoidably exposed for all to see.

So what do these loyal Trump voters hear when Trump speaks?

I will acknowledge that Trump's racism, and his misogyny are a large part of his appeal.

I will acknowledge that Trump's greed and sheer nastiness are a large part of his appeal to some.

I will acknowledge that Trump can fool a certain segment of the population.

But what exactly do these Trump supporters hear?

Any time Trump uses the phrase "my friend", he is lying.

Sociopaths have no friends. They only have victims, or potential victims.

Trump is his only friend.

So if he speaks about any unnamed friend, he is lying.

How much money has Putin funnelled to the NRA?

I just read this post about the NRA:

https://www.democraticunderground.com/10142458782

And I wonder how much Russian money was given by Putin to the NRA, and to GOP lawmakers in general.

So I looked, and quickly found this reminder:

As American communities continue to be victimized by gun violence — including the mass shooting yesterday, in Parkland, Florida — the National Rifle Association continues to wield immense influence over American legislators, primarily through enormous campaign contributions.
But when it comes to funding, the NRA may have finally gone too far: the FBI recently launched an investigation to determine whether a Russian central banker, and Putin ally, illegally funneled money through the organization to help the Trump campaign.

These allegations have prompted a complaint to the Federal Election Commission and an effort by Sen. Ron Wyden to obtain documents from the Treasury Department and the NRA. As shocking as other Russia-related revelations have been — attempts to hack voting machines, vast Internet propaganda, leaking of stolen campaign information — this allegation illustrates a problem of even broader scope.

So when we read about what the leadership of the NRA is doing, are we reading even more propaganda from Putin?

Remember the number of laws passed over the last few years that ban the weraing of face coverings?

The lawmakers generally claimed that these laws were necessary for public safety, and were not targeting any particular religions.

Does anyone think that people wearing masks in public will be charged under these laws?

U.S. Coronavirus Death Toll Curve Passes China As Trump Claims Mortality Rate Is 'Way Down'

From the article:

During his daily propaganda briefing at the White House on Thursday, Donald Trump bragged about the coronavirus mortality rate in the United States being “way, way down,” despite troubling new data.
“The mortality rate is … in my opinion, it’s way, way down,” Trump said. “You know, it’s one thing to have it. It’s another thing to die.”
Trump’s comments come as the number of American coronavirus deaths climbed past 1,200.

Moya Brennan singing "Rinne tu".

An Irish hymn. I have listened to this version since I bought the CD in 2000.

I hope it brings you joy, and a measure of peace.

'We Need Medicare for All': Massive Coronavirus Job Losses Expose Obvious Failure of Employer-Based Insurance

From the article:

After millions of Americans abruptly lost their jobs this month due to the coronavirus, resulting in a record-shattering 3.28 million unemployment claims in one week, Medicare for All advocates are pointing to the crisis as the latest and clearest evidence that the U.S. must abandon its for-profit healthcare system once and for all......

Highlighting the March 2020 spike in a graph showing U.S. jobless claims over the past five decades, advocacy group Physicians for a National Health Program (PNHP) issued a reminder that "under Medicare for All, nobody would have to worry about health coverage after losing their job."...

As Fordham University professor Ashar Foley wrote in an op-ed at Common Dreams Wednesday, the explosion of jobless claims and the resulting crisis of uninsured and underinsured Americans which is likely to follow is just one way in which the coronavirus pandemic has proven the private, for-profit health insurance model to be unsustainable and dangerous:

To those who have objected to MFA, citing the supposed unaffordability of it, my response is that the US cannot afford to continue on its current course.

Virus mutes happy hours in senior haven, but golf goes on

From the article:

Up until a few days ago, residents of The Villages retirement community went about their busy lives filled with spirited happy hours and incessant socializing at what some dub “Disney World for adults."

There were the hundreds of clubs to attend — French lessons, Carolina shag dancing, light-saber fencing — pickleball tournaments to play and Pilates classes to take at this Republican stronghold built on former cow pastures in central Florida.

Even as many Americans isolated themselves against the coronavirus threat, residents of one of the largest concentrations of seniors in the U.S. at first blew off concerns, despite data showing the elderly are particularly susceptible to serious symptoms from COVID-19. But their attitude shifted this week as President Donald Trump, who earlier had downplayed the coronavirus threat, gave warnings to avoid crowds of more than 10 people, some residents of The Villages say.

“This place is Republicanville and too many people believe what the president is saying, and they were out in the streets and out in the squares," said Alan Stone, as he sat in one of The Villages' ever-present golf carts outside a supermarket, waiting for his wife. “They don't realize that they're playing with death."

In Open Letter, 32 Prominent Economists Say Saving Lives Would Save The Economy Trump Is Trying to Reopen

From the article:

Now, 32 prominent economists, including Henry Paulson, Treasury secretary under George W. Bush; Timothy Geithner, Treasury secretary under Barack Obama; and Janet Yellen, former chair of the Federal Reserve, say in an open letter that saving lives would save the economy the president is trying to restore.

“Our paramount concern at this moment should be to slow the spread of this virus and equip our health care system to effectively respond,” they write. “Saving lives and saving the economy are not in conflict right now; we will hasten the return to robust economic activity by taking steps to stem the spread of the virus and save lives.”
