Bill Walton: “I’m still a hippie and proud of it because we were right”

In a revealing Q&A with Vice, noted Deadhead and NBA Hall of Famer Bill Walton discusses the many aspects of his life, both past and present, including his early days at UCLA and on through his professional basketball careers.

One of the many highlights comes when Walton is asked about being a hippie, to which he responded: "I'm still a hippie and proud of it because we were right. We still think that way. I fought Coach Wooden on everything. I fought him on facial hair, hair length, wardrobe, Nixon, Vietnam, the cheerleaders."

Walton continued, "He was mad as could be at me on a constant basis. You look at all the pictures of Coach Wooden before I got to UCLA in 1970. He looked pretty good, but immediately after I arrived, you could see him deteriorate. I basically ruined his life."

Walton also discusses his sometimes rocky NBA career after spending some successful years with the Portland Trailblazers. "My greatest professional failure in life is the San Diego Clippers and the fact that I could not make it go in my hometown," he said of his six years with the (then) San Diego Clippers. "I love San Diego, but my feet were just broken."

The injury discussion leads to one of the darker revelations, where Walton details trouble he had in 2008 resulting from a spine injury that occurred when he was 21. "It ultimately came to a head in February of 2008 when my spine collapsed and I spent years, literally, lying on the floor. I lost everything. I lost my job. I lost my insurance. I lost my dignity and self-respect and as I was lying there I was thinking, 'This is not worth it! I would be better off dead.'"

When asked if he ever contemplated suicide, Walton said "absolutely" adding, "There was no way out. If I had owned a gun, I would've used it, but I was saved by a brilliant physician who was willing to take a risk in conjunction with a pioneering medical device company (NuVasive)."

America Ferrera’s Response To Reporter’s Tone Deaf Question Will Make You Cheer

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/america-ferreras-response-to-reporters-tone-deaf-question-will-make-you-cheer_us_56b3c522e4b08069c7a69eef

America Ferrera made some applause-worthy points on social justice and feminism while chatting with Gloria Steinem during the opening of the 2016 MAKERS conference Monday. But its her anecdote about the response she gave to a reporter's tone-deaf question that will have you cheering.

The "Superstore" actress explained a "hilarious" yet confusing encounter with a journalist who asked her what she would do if Ted Cruz and Hillary Clinton got the Republican and Democratic nominations, respectively.

BTW< I just love her.

I am so glad I live in California (Primary content)

No push polling, no obnoxious ads for a year or more, nope, let all the other states work it out before it gets to our meaningless primary (Only partially kidding on the meaningless thing). So very glad.

Crane collapse in NYC, a couple of questions.....

Was the crane company a union company? trying to find that out and hitting a dead end. Seems this is not all that infrequent. How about the others? Were they union contractors?

Panda Express? (fast Panda?)

WTF does that mean? Everybody knows it takes all day to cook a panda!

Just came from there for the first time and I gotta tell ya it was pretty sucky. Chow Mein, all noodles, no flavor. The entree portions are teeny and the prices high. I can go to my regular place for less, get way better food, not hear classic rock (yeah, that again) and leave full... yet there is a line around the corner at PandaE. And I am still hungry as a Duran Duran song.

A line full of take out orders, all talking or texting in the line waiting for the counter people to move the line along.

And the take out orders come in styrofoam (not rare in the to go category) and the eat in plates were paper (Which is nice)....

Is it the candy entrees (Walnut shrimps and orange chicken seem to be the main order) that keep people coming back? Cuz I probably won't.......(They don't have soup!)

Sen. Clinton: I am both the flip and the flop,

the yin and the yang, the good and evil, black and white, progressive and moderate.

She is all things to everyone. Whatever you want her to be, she will say she is.

God, this shit is infuriating.
BE SOMETHING, for Cripes sake.

Youth, High School Football (and other contact sports) Child Abuse?

Now that we have a LOT of evidence linking concussions, contact sports to brain injuries and damage (CTE, Dementia, others) can we say that if you put your kid in those programs you are abusing that child?

I wouldn't let mine play contact sports, or at least those sports where there was going to be contact on every play, and that was in the 80's. Volleyball, Baseball and Soccer, that was it. No football, Rugby, boxing etc......

My Mom, even though my dad wanted us to play (who suffered and eventually died due to Alzheimer's and the 17 strokes he had due to his football playing days in the 40's), was adamant about not letting us play football. I thanks her for that.

Should we start calling it the "DEEP MEDIA?"

When referring to websites not operated by the TV, newspaper networks (THE MSN?). Sites like this one, Alternet, Commondreams, media matters, Al Jazeera, even Huffpost?

I've been trying to think of a word or phrase that conjures that up when talking about a story that your Right wing uncle (or aunt, no sexism when it comes to this stuff) doesn't see on the MSN. "Where did you get that?"

"The Deep media" seems like a good response instead of saying Al Jazeera where immediately they think it is some direct link to an Iman's mosque......

And yes feel free to dis Huffpost all you want Huffpost haters......
