I posted in GD, but want to dive deeper here

If you don't mind...

In Sumter SC, a man and his girlfriend are arguing, the article does not state if things were physical. Police are called and the man runs. A car chase ensues which ends in a crash. The man breaks out a window and flees on foot.

He is tackled almost immediately. At this point, he is face down on the ground and at least 3 Police Officers open fire.

At least 24 shots form at least 3 cops. He is hit 19 times and pronounced dead at the scene. Depressing and unnecessary but unfortunately not a surprise.

But then there is the damn cherry on top that somehow just twisted my outrage amplifier up to 11. Read this smug nonchalant dismissal of his department's racist murdering incompetence. Be amazed by the cynical deflection and simple stunning arrogance of this fucking fuck.

"This incident shows the devastating, far-reaching effects of domestic violence on individuals, families, law enforcement, the Sumter community and the state as a whole."
Sumter Police Chief Russell F. Roark III

Everyday. Every. Damn. Day

Lawyers for Williams' estate allege Williams was unarmed at this point. While he lay on the ground, at least three Sumter Police Department officers fired their weapons 24 times, hitting Williams 19 times

The man was arguing with his girlfriend - he ran when the cops came and ended up with 19 bullets in his back.

Sumter's Police chief decries the corrosive effects of - DOMESTIC VIOLENCE.

Sec. Mattis, voice of reason? Or just a man trying to keep the dam from bursting?

Defense Secretary James Mattis said Wednesday that NATO does not calculate “past money owed” and Germany is on track to meet its alliance commitments, despite President Trump claiming that the country owed money.

“I cannot give you an accounting for past money owed, because that’s not the way we do that in NATO,” Mattis told the Senate Appropriations defense subcommittee. “We do it through capabilities. That’s the commitment each nation makes."

From The Hill: http://thehill.com/policy/defense/325202-defense-chief-nato-doesnt-track-past-money-owed

Remember that this is the man who highlighted the need for allies and strong alliances in his first message to the DOD on his first day as Secretary of Defense. He also called the Intelligence Services vital for the security of the USA

Together with the Intelligence Community we are the sentinels and guardians of our
nation. We need only look to you, the uniformed and civilian members of the
Department and your families, to see the fundamental unity of our country.

Recognizing that no nation is secure without friends, we will work
with the State Department to strengthen our alliances.

"IMMEDIATE RELEASE" No. NR‐020‐17, Jan. 20, 2017
Message to the Department of Defense from Secretary of Defense James Mattis

And finally after meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg he had this to say:

NATO is growing stronger with an increasing U.S. commitment despite allies' concerns over recent comments by President Donald Trump, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said Tuesday.

"We have a very strong trans-Atlantic bond," Mattis said at the start of a meeting at the Pentagon with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. "It's getting stronger," he said, though "relationships don't stay the same" in the 28-member NATO alliance. "They are always changing," he said.

"In this case, the bond is getting stronger," Mattis added. "It's built on a legacy of common commitments and common defense and we never forget that in this building."

I know that this sounds like I'm shopping for a silver lining in the 45 debacle, but keep on keeping on Secretary Mattis

I'm seeing a bunch of articles about "Hillbillies" & other rural whites...

More than I care to and way more than I ever thought I would.

I feel compelled to comment, since the tone of most of these essays seems clueless and dismissive of what I feel are obvious motivations for their behavior. Writing a treatise on rural white folk with the attitude of a 1930's National Geographic magazine discussing a newfound Amazon tribe does us no damn good.

So what led so many white folks to rally around a racist and incompetent sexual predator?

First off, I am not here to bash them, hell I am them.

Second, just remember that no amount of "understanding" absolves them - They fucking poured arsenic in the water because they assumed only "other people" would have to drink it. Like John Scalzi said - empathy not sympathy. So let me chew your ear for a minute...

I was raised in coal country and I live in corn country now.

As a teen/young adult I watched amazed as Reagan got away with putting a black face on government services and demonizing labor unions.

He did it to tap into the hatred and distrust bubbling under the surface of my neighbors and cousins. And it worked.

I was dumbfounded when almost overnight mill workers and miners abandoned the party that did more to raise their standard of living than any republican ever even tried to do.

Because of Cadillac driving welfare queens. Atheists. Mexicans.

And the absolute ace in the hole since forever - Democrats will take your guns. Yes that is a big deal. A very big deal.

You can take all your arguments and shove them because if the government doesn't trust us - the God fearing patriots in (fill in the blank West Virginia, Kentucky, Missouri, Pennsylvania or wherever) then we can't trust them. Your logic and statistics do not make a dent and never will.

We grew up with guns. We all own some, and all 35 years of pushing for gun control has accomplished is now instead of a deer rifle a 22 a shotgun and maybe a 38 revolver my cousins have multiple pistols and AR and AK rifles as well.

For my family deer season was really harvest season. Between the uncles (and one Aunt), cousins, my dad and I - we filled several freezers with meat that we ate through out the year. Gun control was an immediate hackle raiser with all of us.

I won't down play the racism though... It's racist as fuck in the Appalachians and 45 tapped into that vein even harder than Reagan

If he had ever read a history book, maybe he wouldn't be reminding people...

About who was in charge back then...

Trump ignored the growing controversy while running a campaign style rally in Louisville, Kentucky, where he hit well-used talking points from his 2016 run and sought to rally Republicans to his cause. Trump praised an array of Republican leaders, including Sens. Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul, and also noted that Republicans collectively had the most power as a party since the 1920s.

Yes sirree everybody - We control all the reins of power JUST LIKE IN 1929!
