4 Animals Who Mourn Their Dead

"When a member of their herd dies, elephants often guard the bodies. They become agitated and appear to investigate the dead animal, even touching the bones — the skull and tusks — with their trunks and feet in a ceremonial way,"

I find this really fascinating, especially the video on elephants. Also notice in that clip how the bigger animals are helping the baby up the river bank.

What's your favorite xmas ornament?

What's on your tree this year, and what's your favorite? Pictures would be great!

My serious stuff, the personal and treasured ornaments, are still in storage. But I've made do. I'm all about rustic, living in a log cabin. So my tree is always simple and nature related. I use small branches full of pine cones from our own trees, real walnuts and almonds glued on sisal string, lots of birds, animals, little wood birdhouses and sleds, some fake fruit, and little grapevine wreathes. The only sparkle is some copper snowflakes. Topper is a rusted copper star and a big burlap bow. Luckily, we have vaulted ceilings so we can have a 7' tree.

Here's two of my current faves--a fabric horse, and a bird's nest with eggs (also fake, but nifty). And yes, its a real spruce tree. When I take it down, it will go to the pond for bird and small animal/fish habitat. I tried a few years to go with a tree that I could plant afterward, and they just didn't do well with our wood stove.

Alabama Forced To Release Thousands Of Sex Offenders After Inmates Deny Charges

MONTGOMERY, AL—Saying that the state had no choice but to take them at their word, Alabama officials on Tuesday announced that thousands of sex offenders would be released after the inmates firmly denied the charges. “If they said they didn’t do it, then what choice do we have but to let them go?” said Alabama Department of Corrections administrator Clay Buxton, adding that penitentiaries statewide would be interviewing prisoners and releasing them immediately upon receiving their sworn declaration of innocence. “We sometimes ask these individuals not just once but multiple times if they’re guilty of sex crimes, and when they say no, often very emphatically, our hands are pretty much tied.” Buxton emphasized, however, that any inmates who admitted that they did commit a sex crime will remain behind bars and continue to carry out their sentences as originally handed down.

False Allegations of Sexual Harassment: Misunderstandings and Realities

Since sexual harassment can be in the eye of the beholder, only evidence that meets civil standards of proof, argues a university complaints investigator, can fairly decide what happened.

Why is there a great concern about false allegations of sexual harassment (or other forms of harassment) when few formal complaint investigations result in findings of false allegations? Simply put, the stakes are high. There may be negative impacts on career and reputation. Potential job loss or discipline is a reality. The stress, time, effort, frustration, and financial cost take a toll on the parties. Establishing the basis for a complaint, or defending against allegations,
particularly if this entails proving a negative—that something did not happen when it is alleged it did—is often a difficult and lengthy process. The embarrassment and emotions attached to allegations and evidence can undermine even the strongest individual.

Poll: McConnells approval in Kentucky at 18 percent

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has an 18 percent job approval rating in Kentucky, according to a new survey.

A Public Policy Polling survey found just 18 percent of respondents approve of the job McConnell is doing, compared with 74 percent who disapprove.

If McConnell were up for reelection today, 37 percent of respondents said they would vote for the Kentucky Republican. Another 44 percent would instead choose a Democratic opponent, according to the survey.

An additional 19 percent said they were unsure.

McConnell's seat will be on the ballot next in 2020.

Maybe there's hope to get rid of this asshole yet.

Black or African-American?

I'm not black, but wanted to share this because its a gem from Smokey Robinson.

How Zoo Animals in Florida Survived Hurricane Irma

While pets could flee with their owners as Hurricane Irma bore down on the state of Florida, what about the captive animals in zoos that had nowhere to go?

The good news is that, according to most reports, zoo animals were able to make it through the intense wind, rain and storm surge. To keep their accreditation, members of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums must have a disaster plan and practice an annual preparedness drill.

The enclosures in many of Florida’s zoos have protected areas where large animals like tigers and giraffes can be safely sheltered without having to be evacuated. Smaller animals, however, had to be moved to safer areas. This must have been especially scary for the animals that were already stressed out because they could sense the approaching monster storm.

Watch the flamingo clip. It's pretty funny.

I've been wondering how many horses made it.
