Michael Flynn's sentencing back on hold, again

The criminal sentencing of President Donald Trump’s first national security advisor Michael Flynn will be on hold for at least another two months, a federal judge said Monday during a status conference hearing in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C.

Judge Emmet Sullivan told Flynn’s new lawyer and prosecutors that they should let him know by Aug. 31 whether they are ready for Flynn to be sentenced for his admitted crime of lying to the FBI about the nature of his discussions with Russia’s then-ambassador to the United States, Sergey Kislyak, in the weeks before Trump’s inauguration.

Sullivan told the parties to file their next status report by that date. Flynn’s new lawyer, Sidney Powell, had wanted three months to get up to speed in the case by reviewing what she called a “massive” amount of material turned over by prosecutors.

Why Self-Checkout Is and Has Always Been the Worst

Automation is often presented as an inexorably advancing force, whether it’s ushering in a threat to jobs or a promise of increased leisure or larger profits. We’re made to imagine the robots rising, increasingly mechanized systems of production, more streamlined modes of everyday living. But the truth is that automation technology and automated systems very often fail. And even when they do, they nonetheless frequently wind up stranded in our lives.

For every automated appliance or system that actually makes performing a task easier—dishwashers, ATMs, robotic factory arms, say—there seems to be another one—self-checkout kiosks, automated phone menus, mass email marketing—that actively makes our lives worse.

I’ve taken to calling this second category, simply, shitty automation.

Shitty automation usually, but not always, comes about when new user-facing technology is adopted by a company or institution for the ostensible reason of minimizing labor and cutting costs. Nobody likes wading through an interminable phone menu to try to address a suspect charge on a phone bill—literally, everyone would rather speak with a customer service rep. But that’s the system we’re stuck with because a corporation decided that the inconvenience to the user is well worth the savings in labor costs.

Mayor arrested in raid on home, firing twice at deputies who came to assist

bet he's white so no one died

PORT RICHEY FL — Fraud detectives are investigating whether Mayor Dale Massad, arrested during a raid on his home Thursday morning, received insurance payments for treating patients without a medical license.

Florida Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis announced Thursday he has directed the Department of Financial Services to determine whether Massad billed insurance companies for medical procedures he is accused of conducting at his home.

Massad turned in his license 37 years ago after the state Board of Medicine filed several counts against him in the death of a 3-year-old patient — malpractice, faulty record-keeping, human experimentation without consent and delegating duties to an unqualified person.

SNIP

He was arrested at his home Thursday by agents with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement but not before firing twice at deputies who came to assist, the Paco County Sheriff’s Office said.

Florida may now have America's most conservative Supreme Court

Sometimes it sucks to live in Florida

If you’re among the moderate or liberal Floridians happily surprised by Gov. Ron DeSantis’ zeal for environmental protection, his embrace of a more liberal medical marijuana policy or his appointing Democrats to key offices, this may jolt you:

In that same span of two weeks, DeSantis has created what some conservatives are celebrating as the most conservative state Supreme Court in America.

The Republican governor probably has already produced his most important legacy — a 6-1 ardently conservative Supreme Court majority — that will far outlive the eight years he can serve in office.

“Liberals should be weeping after these three (Supreme Court) picks. Now let’s move some litigation,” Republican consultant Brett Doster, an adviser to former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and former Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore, crowed on Twitter. It came after DeSantis made his third appointment to the Court on Tuesday — Carlos Muñiz, the former counsel to Pam Bondi and Bush.
