Bill Murray The Parkland kids remind me of the students who helped end the Vietnam War

We are living in interesting times, and people are becoming politically activated who weren't previously.

I was thinking, looking at the kids in Parkland, Florida who have started these anti-gun protests, that it really was the students that began the end of the Vietnam War. It was the students who made all the news, and that noise started, and then the movement wouldn't stop. I think, maybe, this noise that those students in Florida are making — here, today — will do something of the same nature.

You've got to surround a deeply political issue like gun control or a war, to come at it from every single direction. You can't just focus on one thing, or aim for just the one goal.

Ending the Vietnam war was not a simple thing, either: You had to make sure that all our people were safe; we had to make sure that they were as safe as you could be. And, you might remember, people thought it was going to be the end of the world if we lost Vietnam. But that war had to stop.

And now, well, Vietnam is one of the most wonderful places to go in the world. People love going there; they love the people. And we all survived: they survived, we survived. People will survive. If you can just stop shooting at them, they really do pretty well.

It's the right idea for a human to live in peace, and a peaceful nature is a proper thing. For children to be concerned about going to school, worried about what could happen to them at school, that makes for a horrible moment. It's just a horrible place for us to be at.

The thing that's so powerful about students is that, when you haven't had your idealism broken yet, you're able to speak from a place that has no confusion, where there is a clear set of values.

But there are idealists left over the age of 18, I'm sure of it. Idealism is a voice that's inside of you; it's your conscience. That can really deteriorate along the way, depending on the road that you follow, and it can become almost dysfunctional, but it's there. Everyone has it. Sometimes it's just a whisper, but, in some people, it's a shout.

A 'lowly staff pharmacist' had an idea. It led to $20M in free meds for poor Kansans.


Tim Reel was tired of having to destroy perfectly good medicine.

Reel is a self-described "lowly staff pharmacist" at prescription drug services giant OptumRx in Overland Park. In that role he gets shipments of unused medications sent back regularly. Some have dented or scuffed packaging. Others come from nursing homes or hospitals after patients no longer need them or have died.

"I asked my boss if we could donate it," Reel said. "He said 'I don't think we can. There's no law that allows it.'"

On Thursday Reel looked on from the back of a room at the Duchesne Clinic in Kansas City, Kan., while leaders of OptumRx, United Healthcare and Kansas Gov. Jeff Colyer celebrated $20 million in prescription drugs donated to tens of thousands of poor Kansans.

It all started with that conversation between Reel and his boss, who was a member of the Kansas State Board of Pharmacy, a regulatory group based in Topeka that licenses the state's pharmacies.

The board worked with the Kansas Legislature on a bill to loosen the law and allow donations of unused, unopened prescription drugs.

Colyer, who was a legislator at the time, said most lawmakers didn't even realize it was prohibited.

"A lot of people were just surprised, like, 'Why do we have to do this?'" Colyer said. "And then it was like, 'Yeah, let's turn on the light.'"

The Kansas Unused Medication Donation Act, passed in 2008, was the first of its kind in the nation. It allows adult care homes, mail service pharmacies and medical care facilities to donate medication in its original packaging to 38 safety-net clinics and medical centers throughout the state that serve low-income and uninsured Kansans.

The program is administered by one of those clinics in southeast Kansas. The staff there keeps an inventory of what medications are available and takes orders from the other clinics on a website created with grant money from the Kansas Health Foundation.

There are some exclusions: No expired medications and no controlled substances, such as opioid painkillers, are allowed.

But staff members at Duchesne Clinic said that other than that it's just like ordering medicine from a private-sector supplier. But it's all free, even the shipping, thanks to a grant from the state health department.

Trudy Taylor of Leavenworth is one of the Kansans who has benefited.

Taylor is uninsured and has been going to a free clinic for care for years to help manage her diabetes and other health problems. She was able to get insulin and other medicine through the donation program until her applications for the drug manufacturers' prescription assistance programs went through.

"There are several medications I take that I would not have been able to afford," Taylor said. "I'd probably be in the hospital or worse without the insulin."

Thousands of people across Kansas have stories like that, which is still hard for Reel to comprehend.

When he and his boss started talking about trying to change the law, they figured it might result in a few hundred donated drugs. Which is a lesson for other "lowly" front-line employees, Reel said.

"Keep your eyes open and if you think you might be able to help, jump in," Reel said. "And keep at it. This didn't happen overnight."

Kansas child protection agency made a mistake. Then Evan Brewer was killed.

Rightwingers disregard for children..dying to support the 2nd amendment,
and now dying because the hillbilly state of kansas ignores pleas from the
citizens concerning abuse...Betcha brownbutts budget cuts had something

For more than a year, people reported to the state that 3-year-old Evan Brewer was suffering in a home of chronic methamphetamine users – that the mother’s boyfriend choked the child until he became unconscious.

The grim details appear in an inch-thick stack of records released by the Kansas Department for Children and Families to The Eagle just before 5 p.m. Friday.

DCF, which investigates reports of child abuse and neglect, kept collecting and compiling reports: that Evan’s mother was regularly high on meth, staying in bed and not feeding him real meals.

And most disturbing: alleging that she was not protecting Evan from her abusive live-in boyfriend, who dragged her by her hair and bragged about choking her and her son. The abuse reached the point that the boy had accidents – he feared walking to the bathroom in the morning because he would have to pass the adults’ bedroom.

Gov. Colyer open to arming teachers; Kansas earns F grade on gun safety

Gov. Jeff Colyer’s recommendation to allow school teachers to carry firearms in schools coincided Friday with issuance of a national report awarding Kansas a failing grade for laws on gun safety.

Colyer, a Johnson County surgeon who assumed the governorship in January, said establishment of an initiative placing guns in the hands of qualified teachers was a viable option in the wake of mass shootings at schools.

“That is one thing people can do,” the Republican governor said. “There are a lot of things we can do to improve this, whether it is improving security at the schools (or) the architecture.”

Colyer said the state’s delivery of mental health services ought to be a significant part of solutions for student safety.

The Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, of Washington, D.C., gave Kansas an “F” on its Annual Gun Law Scorecard, which assesses each state on the strength of its gun laws.

Senate Minority Leader Anthony Hensley, a Topeka Democrat and school teacher for 43 years, said Kansas school districts ought to invest in fortifying buildings to deny access to intruders. He said handing firearms to teachers throughout the education system would be unwise.

“Schools are gun-free zones, and we don’t want to turn them into war zones,” Hensley said.

House Minority Leader Jim Ward, D-Wichita, said expecting teachers to perform duties of a law enforcement officer during an emergency could put more people in danger.

“The truth of the matter is well-trained, experienced sharpshooters make mistakes in high-stress, active-shooter situations. To expect people who have been trained to educate children to be able to also step into a role as some sort of cop is unrealistic and is wrong,” Ward said.

The Giffords Law Center’s grade for Kansas reflected the state’s implementation of a law allowing concealed carry of handguns inside university buildings and the passage of a law eliminating training, background check and permit requirements for a person to carry concealed in the state.

In terms of a state-by-state ranking, the Giffords Law Center said Kansas had the 48th weakest gun laws because of the absence of universal background checks and lack of a statute preventing domestic abusers from buying or owning guns.

“Year after year, our research shows that states that get serious about passing stronger gun violence prevention laws have a much better chance of reducing the number of deaths linked to firearms,” said Robyn Thomas, the center’s executive director.

The Senate Federal and State Affairs Committee is scheduled Tuesday to consider House Bill 2145, which would prohibit possession of a firearm by a person convicted of a misdemeanor for domestic violence in the past five years.

On Feb. 22, the Kansas House canceled debate on a bill authorizing public school districts to offer a firearms course sanctioned by the National Rifle Association.

Colyer said he was aware of a need for state government to work collaboratively with local districts to formulate a comprehensive response to violence.
