The people you're referring to, the lost souls who have hopelessly ingested propaganda

Why can’t they take everything you’ve said, and apply it towards me? As a gay guy, I’ve been told and primed my whole life to handle people like this, people who “are filled with love” but go to church every Sunday and for Reasons can’t outwardly express their tolerance.

And every single time I feel like I’ve “gotten through” and “helped them see the light,” maybe I have for that hour, but as soon as they get home and flip Fox back on, everything I’ve said is forgotten. If anything it’s, “oh the faggy liberal got worked up AGAIN, mission accomplished.”

Paradox of tolerance and all that jazz

Nate Silver compares temporary remote learning to Iraqi war casualties

The Tweet:

https://twitter.com/natesilver538/status/1478925497786675206 Tweet text:
Suppose you think that school closures were a disastrous, invasion-of-Iraq magnitude (or perhaps greater) policy decision. Shouldn't that merit some further reflection?

He even doubles down on his position further down thread:
https://twitter.com/natesilver538/status/1478926557695647752 Tweet text:
Yeah, I think depriving tens of millions of school children of an in-person education for a year or longer is absolutely on that magnitude. No question.

Sorry NYT, but when your “numbers guy” is spouting this type of nonsense, I’m going to have a harder time taking him seriously. Makes me think of this quote that is usually misattributed to Twain: “Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt”

Are you talking about msn.com ?

If so, definitely have noticed the same thing.

And before the inevitable chime in of “just change it if it bothers you so much…,” I’m not referring to myself here. MSN.com is the default for millions and millions of browsers. I shouldn’t need to explain why this is not a good thing.

Glad he's out, the TV world can do with fewer shouty white men

Absolutely can’t stand his demeanor and schtick, and I always got major diva vibes from him.

On the 20th anniversary of his show, right before he got axed, they dedicated an entire week to “celebrate.” Reminded me of that Trump cabinet meeting where everyone had to praise and give thanks to Dear Leader. Just very self-indulgent and pointless.

Hey Chris, there’s a show on TV that’s been on much longer than you, much more entertaining, and in the same timeslot…it’s called Wheel of Fortune. Guests also seem to have a better time on that show, at least they were allowed to speak.

I also never liked the way he always referred to his wife as “his QUEEN” (emphasis his). Any time there’s that over-the-top, putting-someone-on-a-pedestal talk, I’m going to wonder.

Even when he got the axe, he did it in an unprofessional, me-me-me way, basically saying “peace out MFers” and going to commercial. Steve Kornacki looked shellshocked and did an admirable job hosting the show for the hour. But the fact that it seemed like a total surprise to him further indicated to me that Chris Matthew’s doesn’t give a shit about anyone but himself, much less his hapless crew.

Good riddance.

It's kind of a hate-watch for me

Mostly when Joe is on, I find the whole thing an exercise in absurdism.... Joe goes off on some ramble, Mika gets visibly agitated and tries to get a word in edgewise but can't. Meanwhile all the guests are sitting there sheepishly, not commenting so they don't get caught in the crossfire of bickering spouses on national TV.

And I don't think I can ever forgive them for hosting the Trump Call-In hour they ran pre-2016. Hope the ratings for your weekday morning cable TV show were worth it! (sad thing is it probably was worth it)

All that said and kidding aside, the guests and conversations they have are often interesting and engaging and the reason I watch. I think Alisyn Camerota and John Berman on CNN are great, but I don't find the morning show as interesting. It's the fact that MJ gets so many guests, and the quality conversations they often have, that I find myself paying attention.

I think it's also worth looking at how one watches TV. During the day while I'm working, I'll have the TV running at a low volume. It's background noise and not the primary focus of my attention. This means I'm not going to channel surf and flip channels whenever Chuck Todd comes on and make a dumbass point. The process goes more like, I'm typing an email, Chuck Todd makes some exclamation (I swear one of these days he's going to lose all his money on Gamestop stock and ask Stephanie Ruhle on air for financial advice), I look up and think to myself "is the man being this dense intentionally? no, he's just dense." I return to my work email and carry on with my day. Might check out Twitter to see people's takes of Chuck Todd's take. Point being, it's background noise.

I haven't met as many people as you

But I’ve seen what you’ve described among my scientist vs engineer friends.

I chalk it up to the fundamental difference between science and engineering: with science, the goal is expansion of knowledge. Thinking outside of the box and the limits of our understanding.

With engineering, the focus is “given these constraints, how do you build a system?” I feel like the engineering mindset is conducive to a more rigid type of thinking, one that favors (perceived) stability at the expense of freedom. I blame the lack of liberal arts in an engineering curriculum.

ABC and CBS too

Made an OP about it, but it kind of hacked me off that ABC and CBS weren’t airing the presser.

But you can be sure that we’ll get Chris Christie’s valuable “analysis” of it later on...

Thought this was interesting

Of all three legacy media companies, only NBC bothered to air the press briefing.

Glad you brought up the Schultz aspect

I feel like that's been memory-holed. This isn't ancient history either!
