I never thought I would see the day

John McCain retired from the Navy on April 1, 1981, as a captain. ... His numerous military decorations and awards include the Silver Star Medal, two Legions of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, three Bronze Star Medals, two Purple Heart Medals, two Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, and Prisoner of War Medal.

John Kerry won a Silver Star, a Bronze Star, and three Purple Hearts.

I never really much agreed with McCain's politics, but I absolutely respected his service to our country.

I voted for John Kerry when he ran for President, but, we all know how that worked out.

It absolutely galls me to hear Lyin' Donnie Bone Spurs mocking these two fine men. And I have seen comments on line from right wing zealots who say the most disgusting things about McCain, it makes me sick to my stomach. I can't even repeat them here, they are so vile.

I surely hope that the type of comments I have seen belong to a very small minority of twisted minds. How they can disrespect two courageous military veterans and worship a cowardly, lying sack of shit who lies, cheats, and mocks military veterans, it's just beyond me.

I don't even know how to end this or what to say, other than, again, I hope those twisted assholes, so miserable and so full of hate, are in the minority of our population.

MLB's Only Double No Hitter in History

Took place on May 2, 1917, in a game between the Chicago Cubs and the Cincinnati Reds.

"The Reds put 29-year-old Fred Toney on the mound. Toney had a great fastball and was a solid pitcher who had won 17 and 14 games in the two previous seasons.

For the hometown Cubs, Jim "Hippo" Vaughn (also 29) got the call. Hippo Vaughn was one of baseball's finest pitchers during this period. From 1914 to 1919, he would win 20 games in five of the six seasons. Vaughn's unflattering nickname came about because of a not-really-all-that-bad body form. He stood 6' 4" and weighed 215 pounds. The slightly cruel nickname almost doesn't make sense to us nowadays, as it would seem, by the description to be ill-fitting or in-apt."

It's not your imagination - the robo calls are getting worse

I saw this today and thought, how true. We still have a land line and get at least 8-10 robocalls a day. I never answer a call from a number or name I do not recognize, but it's getting very annoying hearing that phone go off all day long. I've been getting a few lately on my cell, as well. Seems like Congress has no interest in stopping this practice, in fact, if some businesses are making money, they probably are just going to look the other way, after all, profits come before customer satisfaction all the time, right? You would think it would be quick and easy to enact legislation ending this practice altogether.

From the NYT:

"Though automated calls have long plagued consumers, the volume has skyrocketed in recent years, reaching an estimated 3.4 billion in April, according to YouMail, which collects and analyzes calls through its robocall blocking service. That’s an increase of almost 900 million a month compared with a year ago."

"Despite these efforts, robocalls are a thorny problem to solve. Calls can travel through various carriers and a maze of networks, making it hard to pinpoint their origins, enabling the callers to evade rules. Regulators are working with the telecommunications industry to find ways to authenticate calls, which would help unmask the callers."

Trump's Made-Up Immigration Crisis

by Fareed Zakaria

President Trump has said that the group of migrants that recently made its way from Central America to the United States symbolizes out-of-control immigration, lawlessness and violence besetting the country. “Getting more dangerous. ‘Caravans’ coming,” he tweeted last month. This week, he added: “The migrant ‘caravan’ that is openly defying our border shows how weak & ineffective U.S. immigration laws are.”

The facts suggest the opposite. Last year, according to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection report, illegal cross-border migration was at its lowest level on record.

The Real Reason Ford is Phasing Out its Sedans

They're not profitable enough. And their slick marketing is convincing us that we want their bigger vehicles.

**************

Isn’t it lucky that Ford’s most profitable vehicles are also its most popular?

Now, as then, Ford and others are exploiting a well-crafted loophole in fuel economy regulations that makes bigger more profitable. In 2011, the industry won a change in the EPA’s calculation of Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE). The “footprint rule”—which refers to the area within the perimeter of the four wheels—calculates a vehicle’s fuel economy as a function of its size. The rule change effectively incentivizes building larger vehicles by holding them to progressively easier standards. As a result, the largest and most profitable vehicles also enjoy the lowest relative costs of compliance. The rule change also constituted a backdoor tariff on more efficient imports, but that’s another story.

Okay for Ford, I don't buy their products anyway. But I sure as hell don't want to be made to believe I need to drive some huge behemoth around just to go to the grocery store and do all my other everyday errands. I guess I'm in the minority.....

I need some help

from fellow DUers on suggestions for a food gift. I'm going to briefly visit a good friend tomorrow afternoon who has just come home from the hospital after having surgery, and I'd like to bring her a little something in the way of a food treat. Her husband is on a gluten-free diet, and I'd like to bring something they can both enjoy, so something like muffins or banana bread is out. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you in advance! -- Ohiogal

Last night I saw a concert

....Brit Floyd. Three hours of indescribably awesome Pink Floyd music and laser light show.

The second song in their first set was "Mother". When the singer sang the words, "Mother should I build the wall?" The entire place
shouted NO! and the same thing happened when he sang the words, "Mother should I trust the government?" another resounding NO! It was great!

The irreverent comic strip artist who's also a Marine

Since 2010, Mr. Uriarte has illustrated more than 800 comic strips under the “Terminal Lance” brand, along with a self-published graphic novel, “The White Donkey,” which hit the best-seller list after it was acquired by Little Brown in 2016. On Tuesday, Little Bown released a collection, “Terminal Lance: Ultimate Omnibus,” spanning nearly a decade of Mr. Uriarte’s work.

The Marine Corps likes to present itself with dutiful seriousness. “Terminal Lance” is a counterpoint to that. It is a tribute to the service’s permanent underclass, the young grunts who are too weary to feign enthusiasm anymore. (The strip’s title is derived from slang for the holder of a junior rank — lance corporal — who will never be promoted and thus will depart the corps as a terminal lance.)
