Kasich Welcomes Immigrants to Ohio

(cross posted in Ohio group)

Gov. John Kasich has established an Office of Opportunities for New Americans, paired with an advisory committee of 12 representatives from immigrant communities, business leaders and nonprofit immigration advocates, to provide resources for legal immigrants in Ohio to obtain job skills and employment opportunities.

To Republican Gov. John Kasich, an immigrant and a new American are one in the same.

That much is clear with the outgoing governor’s most recent creation, one that will help immigrants find jobs in Ohio by breaking down barriers — often set up by state government — that can make life even more difficult for immigrants experiencing a life-changing transition.

The Office of Opportunities for New Americans, paired with an advisory committee of 12 representatives from immigrant communities, business leaders and nonprofit immigration advocates, will provide resources for legal immigrants to obtain job skills and employment opportunities.

Joining the committee in their discussions and recommendations are leaders from the Ohio departments of Education, Higher Education, Job and Family Services, Commerce, Development Services Agency and Office of Workforce Transformation, giving the committee an interconnectedness between state agencies and the immigrants they aim to assist.

In sharp contrast to President Donald Trump, Kasich is opening his arms to immigrants and the economic benefits he says they can bring.

In my email Inbox today

I got an email from "US Concealed Online" .... encouraging me to get qualified for a Concealed Carry permit for free. They insist that qualification takes less than 60 seconds and Certification takes less than 30 minutes.

Somehow I am not comforted by the fact that this is all it takes to allow someone to concealed carry.

There was a story in our local news the other day about a grandmother who was shot in the leg while waiting to see fireworks with her grandchild at our local mall. Police are still trying to figure out what happened.

I have no idea why I got this email since I have never owned a gun in my entire life nor obviously have I ever donated money to any pro gun organizations.

Washington's Latest Pair of Loons

The wife of Bill Shine — former Fox News co-president who just joined the Trump administration as White House communications chief — has a lengthy history of defending racists, promoting unfounded anti-vaccination conspiracies, writing about “Islamic Insanity,” and making racially-charged remarks on her social media pages.

Darla Shine made these remarks primarily on her Twitter account, @darlashine, which was deleted as soon as the White House announced that her husband was officially joining the Trump administration.

But not before Mediaite took screenshots.

On her personal website, Shine (who, like her husband, did not respond to requests for comment) says that she got her start in media by working as a “TV reporter and producer.” After giving birth to her first child, that site asserts, she opted to leave the office and become a stay-at-home mom while her husband stayed in the news industry.

Her Twitter account, Facebook page, and podcast all focus on this brand of traditionalist and very public mommy blogging. But she doesn’t stay confined to that one topic.

“What kind of Pimp Producers are at #CNN passing around the same guest #SamNunberg like a drunk whore 5 times #JeffZucker should be fired,” she wrote amid Sam Nunberg’s infamous cable news meltdown in March.

Her posts on the subject of race, however, divert from garden variety right-wing fare.

The Pittsburgh Pirates Pitcher who chose Baseball and Music

LOS ANGELES – The options, whimsically proposed, were baseball star or rock star and while Steven Brault sorted through the proper way to reply while wearing a baseball uniform and drawing a baseball paycheck, his teammate, less encumbered by the optics, blurted, “Rock star.”

And, well, if it was out there anyway …

“Yeah, you have to be a rock star, right?” the Pittsburgh Pirates left-hander said. “You have to be a rock star. Are you kidding me? Being a baseball player, what I am now, is absolutely incredible. Being a star at the level of [Clayton] Kershaw or [Max] Scherzer, one of those guys, would be absolutely awesome. If you’re a rock star, though, you’re well known, you’re traveling all around the world, getting to play all these places in front of all these people, that’s more just letting your passion go. Baseball is showing a skill that has passion along with it. But music is just, ‘Here’s my passion.’

“So, yeah, I would go rock star.”

He grew up in San Diego a baseball fan, a Padres fan, a Tony Gwynn fan, the kind of fan whose dad put him and his brother into an RV 11 years ago and drove them 2,800 miles to Cooperstown to witness Gwynn’s Hall of Fame induction.

So the baseball thing is real.

I need some advice

I find that, many times, since I'm white, other white right wingers just assume that I am of the same mind as they are in regards to minorities.

An example ..... There is a woman I see often at the community pool where I swim and we have become acquainted, sort of. The other day we were chit chatting about how hot the weather's been lately, and I remarked that it feels like Florida. She told me that her adult daughter lived down in Florida for a year, and hated it so she came back to Pennsylvania. I said, oh yeah, it can get hot down there in the summer. And she said, no, it wasn't the weather, she didn't like all the Hispanics. "They were everywhere!" her daughter said, "you can't even listen to the radio or go into a store and hear English down there any more" And the kicker .... my friend said her daughter "didn't feel safe going to Walmart after 9 pm because it was full of them, and the police in her town (?) told her to stay away from Walmart at night because it wasn't safe." ??? Now, what am I supposed to say to that? Since i was kind of put on the spot, I just said, uh huh, and changed the subject. Now I feel like a weenie. But how do you answer people like that when you see them all the time? Anyone have any suggestions?

I am wondering

Just from reading articles submitted by DUers this morning.....

Donald Trump now has a 47% approval rating, according to the latest polls.

I have also learned that 44% of Americans polled think he is a racist.

What a sad, sad, commentary on our mind set.
