by not attending inauguration, Trump causes logistical problems with getting "nuclear football" back

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9165719/Donald-Trump-causes-logistical-nightmare-nuclear-codes-leaving-Washington-early.html

How Trump's early White House departure has caused a logistical nightmare over the nuclear codes: Military will have to fly 'football' back to DC after president takes it to Florida

Donald Trump is expected to leave Washington at around 8am on Wednesday

He will, as president, take the 'nuclear football' with him, carried by an aide

Normally the football is transferred from one aide to another at noon

Instead Trump's football will be deactivated at noon and Biden's activated

'There are at least three to four identical 'footballs': one follows the president, one follows the vice president, and one traditionally is set aside for the designated survivor at events like inaugurations and State of the Union addresses,' he said.

Trump pardons one of those parents who purchased admission to USC for their kid

Trump also granted an outright pardon to Bob Zangrillo, a Miami developer awaiting trial on charges stemming from the Varsity Blues investigation into bribery and fraud in the college admissions process. He allegedly paid $250,000 to have his daughter falsely designated as a competitive crew recruit at the University of Southern California.

Zangrillo’s “daughter did not have others take standardized tests for her and she is currently earning a 3.9 GPA” at USC, the White House’s explanation of the pardon said.

Trump team tries to milk the politics of food boxes to its final days

The first daughter for months has been touting the USDA’s Farmers to Families Food Box Program through events, social media posts and photo ops, contributing to speculation that she’s looking to launch her own political career in Florida, her father’s soon-to-be home and one that Trump won in both 2016 and 2020. She’s been quick to claim credit for the food aid program, which she’s said she helped launch last spring, at the urging of her father, to help connect surplus crops with people in need.

The flurry of self-promotion, following other efforts by Trump administration officials to leverage the food program for alleged political gain, has triggered mounting complaints from anti-hunger advocates who are concerned the $6 billion aid program is being brazenly leveraged for political purposes.

“Food assistance shouldn’t be politicized and it’s now being used as a tool to soften Ivanka’s image,” said one advocate, who argued that nutrition assistance should remain nonpartisan. The Biden transition team is reviewing the program, which has funding through the spring.

The political positioning has particularly irked policy advocates because the Trump administration has overseen historic increases in hunger and food insecurity, especially among children and Black and Hispanic households, as the pandemic devastated the economy. The administration has repeatedly faced pressure to make it easier for kids from low-income households to access free meals this school year. Billions in nutrition aid that Congress approved in September has also not yet gone out the door, stuck in a bureaucratic morass at USDA, as POLITICO reported last month.

Bill/ Melinda Gates Are Now America's Biggest Private Farmland Owners, 242000 acres (378 sq miles)

for references...if the land was in one spot and square in shape, 242000 acres would be equivalent approximately to a piece of land 19 miles long and 19 miles wide

-------------------------------------------------

Bill Gates, the fourth richest person in the world and a self-described nerd who is known for his early programming skills rather than his love of the outdoors, has been quietly snatching up 242,000 acres of farmland across the U.S. — enough to make him the top private farmland owner in America.

After years of reports that he was purchasing agricultural land in places like Florida and Washington, The Land Report revealed that Gates, who has a net worth of nearly $121 billion according to Forbes, has built up a massive farmland portfolio spanning 18 states. His largest holdings are in Louisiana (69,071 acres), Arkansas (47,927 acres) and Nebraska (20,588 acres). Additionally, he has a stake in 25,750 acres of transitional land on the west side of Phoenix, Arizona, which is being developed as a new suburb.

According to The Land Report’s research, the land is held directly and through third-party entities by Cascade Investments, Gates’ personal investment vehicle. Cascade’s other investments include food-safety company Ecolab, used-car retailer Vroom and Canadian National Railway.

---------

It is not entirely clear how Gates’ farmland is being used, or whether any of the land is being set aside for conservation. (Cascade did not return Forbes’ request for comment.) However, there is some indication that the land could be used in a way that aligns with the foundation’s values. Cottonwood Ag Management, a subsidiary of Cascade, is a member of Leading Harvest, a nonprofit that promotes sustainable agriculture standards that prioritize protections of crops, soil and water resources.

A 2017 purchase of 14,500 acres in Eastern Washington put the Gateses on the top of the list. This has them ranked by private farmland acres-owned over the Offutt Family, which owns R.D. Offutt Company and affiliates, the largest American potato grower; and Stewart and Lynda Resnick, who own the Wonderful Company that makes Halo clementines, POM juice and Wonderful Pistachios.

He Was Just Everywhere': A Tired Country After Four Years of Trump

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/19/us/donald-trump-presidency-ends.html

He Was Just Everywhere’: A Tired Country After Four Years of Trump
Some Americans are eager for a break from the constant news produced by President Trump. Others said his term had only inspired them to be more involved in activism.

PITTSBURGH — For four years, David Betras has been unable to escape Donald J. Trump. The president has visited Youngstown, Ohio, the seat of Mr. Betras’s home county. So have the president’s children. People Mr. Betras had known for years became in thrall to Mr. Trump. There was no getting away on Facebook, on Instagram, at the local bar.

“In the last four years, has there been a day when Trump wasn’t somewhere in your orbit?” said Mr. Betras, the former chairman of the Mahoning County Democratic Party. “Every day, I couldn’t get him out. He was just everywhere. It was like an omnipresence.”

------

Even for many of Mr. Trump’s supporters, it has been wearying. Some, still fully loyal, say they feel essentially defeated after years of political battle.

“Four years were kind of unpleasant,” said Gwendolyn Milner, 68, of Fayetteville, Ga., “because we felt we had to defend him but nobody would stop to listen.” It is important to remain engaged, she said, even though she already feels cynical and beaten down.

Others spoke tiredly of trying to defend Mr. Trump’s policies to friends and family only to be hamstrung, inevitably, by some presidential tweet about a potential purchase of Greenland or a diatribe about wind turbines.

Doubling Up Masks Creates 'Obstacle Course' For COVID, may equal N-95

https://denver.cbslocal.com/2021/01/19/doubling-up-face-masks-creates-obstacle-course-covid-colorado-doctor/

“Specifically what we’re saying is that two masks may actually equal the protection you would get from N-95 masks, which is considered the best mask there is short of a complete respirator-type unit,” Hnida said.

He said wearing a surgical mask with a cloth mask over it does give an extra layer of protection.

“The reason for that is you do wind up getting more filtration of viral particles, it becomes more of an obstacle course for the viral particle to make its way from the air into your nose and throat and then into your lungs.”

But three masks may be going too far, since that could interfere with the ability to breathe.

He pointed out President-Elect Joe Biden has been “double-masking” for many months, as have coaches at football games in the NFL.

How petty can you get? Biden & family arrive in DC on charter plane after Trump REFUSES them gov jet

How petty can you get? Biden and family arrive in DC on charter plane after Trump REFUSES them government jet - as Joe cries during heartrending speech about son Beau

Trump delivered Biden one more snub, forcing him to charter his own plane to fly from Delaware to Washington D.C. instead of authorizing an Air Force jet

The president-elect flew the short hop from Delaware to Joint Base Andrews

After they landed, they taxied past an idle Air Force Boeing 757 on the tarmac

Just as the Biden family landed, the White House released a 20-minute farewell video from Trump, which did not mention his successor by name or congratulate him on his victory
